Apron, Smock, Pinafore pattern discussion

Aw, sad about the shops and your lonely lunch but very happy you have patterns, fabric, inspiration, & the love & appreciation of good friends :sparkling_heart:

I would have noticed the hat!

I think the Maria Apron

in this fabric (pigeon picked this pairing)

The Verity Hope Smock Frock

in one of these linens

Sew Liberated Studio Tunic

in this heavier weight slubby fabric of unknown fibers I got from the thrift shop but there might not be enough fabric for all those pockets so the next paler blue fabric may work, it’s also a bit heavier weight than linen or quilting cotton.

There’s enough of this ticking to make any apron/smock with but I hesitate because of the pattern matching for the stripes on pockets, and I do want pockets. I’ll think about this one.

Do the pockets in a vastly different print? Or do them opposite in the same? (Like, if the body is vertical stripes flip the fabric to make the pockets horizontal?)
Love all those patterns so I’m looking forward to seeing them done up!

Aw Linda, I’m sorry you had such a sad day. I wish I’d been with you, with matching cactus hats of course (I need to see a picture of your lovely face in that hat btw) I’m glad that we have the online community xx

I have these three fabrics in my stash that I want to use up.

I plan on making the crossover apron with the blue linen. I bought a dress pattern for the middle print. The first fabric is a fine corduroy. I am thinking it will make a nice jumper.

I haven’t found the right weight fabric for the smock dress. Everything I have pulled out seems too stiff. I have lightweight linen but it is white. I could dye it. I want a moss green so maybe I should just buy some lightweight linen.

Your fabrics look great, I love corduroy. I think stiffer fabric may be ok with the Maria apron.

I dyed a fitted sheet green, that’s what I’m using. The dye travels so it’s not good fabric for anything that will need laundering.

The “medium” is bigger than I’m liking.

I’m partway thru the remake but a big snow storm is coming so we’re already in the truck on the way home. I’ll be back for a week’s vacation, maybe even 2 weeks! This’ll be waiting for me. Lots of clips to tame the unruly bias!

I cut down 10 whole inches off the sides! The bottom may be a bit tight for my stride but I’ll just shorten it or add a back vent. This time instead of double folded bias, I sewed it in a single fold so the edge I’ll be hand stitching is the centre fold. Linen is oddly stretchy, makes it hard to keep things straight. One other change I think I’d make is to not edge stitch the straps, it’s “structure” fighting against the natural looseness of this fabric.

The more times I make a pattern, the better refined the technique & tweaks become. I have so much fabric, I may make all these patterns as many times as is enjoyable & chose a favourite to buy fabric for. I’m really having fun sewing as slowly as I want, it feels amazing to take my time for a change.

I agree that making clothes without time constraints is really much more enjoyable. I am also determined not to buy more fabric unless absolutely necessary, like maybe a lining.

Those curved foldovers look like a bear to wrangle!

I don’t have enough of the corduroy to make the length I want. I am using a vintage pattern from the 1970’s. I am going to look for something that might work as an underskirt or petticoat to make it longer. I am sure there is a bin full of treasures I forgot about!

Ooh, what’s the pattern?

Maybe I should change the name of this topic to the ongoing apron/smock pattern review?

This one…the brown jumper

I found most of the patterns I made while I was in HS and college. It was a trip down memory lane. My favorite pattern now sells for $40 on etsy. I wish I hadn’t thrown them all out! They seem to be coming back in fashion but in a more modern way.

Looks like a lot of fabric! A nice one for pattern mixing.

Less than three yards! The skirt is rather full so I will reduce that some. The top bib part is just two rectangles. The corduroy is thin but I will test the gathering to make sure it doesn’t flare out too much and make my hips look huge. I am pretty much a rectangle shape so it should be ok.

I bought this retro pattern today, Butterick B5099. I like view E the best, followed by D. I think it would be easy enough to alter it to close the back for an over-the-head smock dress.

Nice! I like the variations you can make.

This thread just appeared for me. And I’ve been searching for a cross back apron pattern. But now I’m scared to start.

Go for it! I’m just being really, really picky.

I’m worried that most of them won’t look right on me due to… The exceedingly large pear shape of my lower half.

Flattering shape is 2nd only to comfort & quality, after all. If you share some other garment silhouettes you like I’ll bet we can find just the right smock pattern for you to love :face_blowing_a_kiss:
Goodness knows we have looked at enough of them, ha!

I love this fabric but can’t seem to find it. The smock sells for $265! I can make that! ha ha ha
