~ June 1st, 2020 - September 30th, 2020~

Welcome to Hogwarts!

~ WHAT IS THE HP CRAFTALONG & HOW TO PARTICIPATE ~
The Harry Potter Craftalong (HPC) is a way to share your crafts, cheer on friends, celebrate your love of Harry Potter, and most of all to be inspired. Each term we have class prompts inspired by Hogwarts courses, Detention challenges to motivate you on mundane tasks, & Headmistress Musings inspired by the season. Complete crafts inspired by these prompts, and you earn House Points. While the prompts themselves are HP themed, your crafts do not have to be. You may craft anything you wish. You may join anytime during a term, and participate as much, or as little as you wish. At the end of each term we take an average of each House’s Points, and declare a winner!

To participate, simply read through the prompts in the post below, find one that inspires you, create a craft to fit the challenge, then post it here. That’s all there is to it!

~ HOW TO POST ~
To submit a project, cut & paste the following header into your post, and fill in the required info. You can add more than one project to your post.

Class or Challenge Title:
SPEW or LC Contest: If your item is for charity, or was created as an entry to a contest here on LC, enter that here; if not please delete this line.
House:
Project Name & Page Link: Add a link to your project posted here on Lettuce Craft, or to a recipe, pattern, etc.
Brief Description: How it fits the requirements, pattern/techniques used, any fun tips, etc.
Project Picture: REQUIRED! No picture = No House Points

~ ABOUT ELIGIBLE HPC PROJECTS ~
-Projects should take a minimum of 30 minutes to make.
-For a project to be counted, it must have a picture or a link to a picture included at the time of posting. If your item is a private piece, or is being kept secret for a Swap, you are more than welcome to send a Private Message directly to the the Headmistress.
-For any cooking/food project, in addition to a photo, you must post a complete recipe, or a link to the recipe you used. No recipe = no points.

~ HPC FAQs ~
-Do you sort me? No, you decide which house you belong to.
-I have a problem or question; who can I ask? You can send a Personal Message (PM) to Headmistress @MistressJennie . You can also ask questions in the thread.
-Do I have to craft all the classes & challenges? Nope! Just do what you want to craft.
-Does my craft project have to be Harry Potter themed? No, craft anything you like.
-This is a lot of info. How do I keep myself organized? Feel free to use Hermione’s Homework Planner , a Google Doc created & updated by MistressJennie. Claim a sheet of the Homework Planner at the bottom of the page, and rename it with your userame. Please DO NOT alter the Master Sheet at the far left.

:steam_locomotive::sparkles::scroll: ~Class Prompts~ :scroll::sparkles::steam_locomotive:
:alembic: Alchemy: Continuing with our study of the classical planets, we are looking towards Venus this term. Venus is linked to the metal Copper. Please create something linked to Venus, or the Roman goddess of love and beauty it is named after, or incorporate copper in to the item in some way.

:mage: Apparition: In order to be allowed to apparate you must pass the course and be of age. For this semester, I want you to craft something inspired by something legal you can do once you become of age. Maybe make a dish with alcohol, something for the car you’re allowed to drive, or something for someone who are in the military, or even for someone who are getting married.

:infinity: Arithmancy: Wizards can use arithmancy to help predict trends in the future. This term please craft something inspired by the upcoming trends. Maybe it’s fashion, environment, diet, music or other kinds of trends.

:ringer_planet: Astronomy: This term we will study the constellation of Scorpius. For your homework please craft something that has a curve or a “sting” to it.

:owl: Care of Magical Creatures (CoMC): The pixie is a mischievous little creature that is electric blue in color and delights in all types of tricks and practical jokes. For your assignment this term please craft something tricky or that is a practical joke. Make a hoopla where the punchline is highlighted, crochet a tricky pattern, or bake a cake with a surprise inside. Alternatively, craft something bright blue in color.

:sparkles: Charms: This term we are working on the Baubillous charm. This creates a jet of white sparks from the tip of your wand. It is useful to indicate your location. For homework this term, create something that involves the use of fire, or is white. As most of us are in the one location for the duration, you may alternatively create something to make your home more beautiful.

:blue_heart: Defense Against the Dark Arts (DADA): As the world is currently afflicted by the Corona-hex, we will study hex deflection spells. Salvio hexa You will study ways to mitigate its effects. For homework, craft something that helps you, or others, through the duration of the current hex. This might be masks, nourishing food, comforting blankets or shawls for those that are suffering from the effects of the corona-hex.

:crystal_ball: Divination: This summer we will begin our study of Lithomancy, the art of divining by studying crystals or semi-precious stones and the light they refract. To demonstrate your mastery of the subject matter please submit a project that either utilizes a transparent element or contains jewel tones. This could include jem colored candies or a fairy garden featuring translucent resin water.

:broom: Flying: While broomstick flying may be marginally safer at this point than the muggle flying machines, most of us have had our vacation plans disrupted for the coming months. Instead of an in-person appearance, take a flight of imagination and craft something inspired by a place you would like to visit, either in the muggle, magical, or a fictional world.

:herb: Herbology: Bottle Gourd has smooth, light-green skin, and white flesh. It’s used to help control blood sugar and relieve headaches, and has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Further uses include treating Alzheimer’s and age-related senility. Your options are: 1) include a green or white element 2) make something you find soothing, such as an eye pillow, blanket, or just something that makes you feel calm and happy to make or look at 3) make something with cleaning properties, whether it’s a magical floor wash, or a dish scrubber, or an organizer to help you tidy things away; or 4) create something that helps you remember something.

:blue_book: History of Magic (HoM): The Quidditch World Cup is a major event held every 4 years. Many Witches and Wizards will travel to the site and camp out for days or weeks before the matches to enjoy the festive atmosphere. For your assignment, create your project out-of-doors, or to be used camping or picnicking.

:walking_man: Muggle Studies: You may be surprised to know that Wizard Society occasionally takes inspiration from the Muggle World. One example of this is the Knight Bus, emergency transport for the stranded witch or wizard. The bus has 3 tiers, and is recognized by it’s purple color. For your assignment, please create some purple, with 3 layers, or that offers protection.

:test_tube: Potions: We will be making the Vitamix Potion, which will give us a burst of energy - which I’m sure we all can do with during the Corona-Hex. For your homework I would like you to craft something that would be helpful during or after doing your exercises

:scroll: Study of Ancient Runes (SoAR): The rune Ehwaz means “Partnership”. For this project, create something with 2 main materials or colors, such as a striped scarf. You may also create a project with assistance from another wizard, or muggle.

:mouse2: Transfiguration: The Multicorfors spell changes the color and style of a persons outfit. Shake up you own or someone else’s style this term by crafting something for a new outfit. Add a splash of color to an otherwise awesome plain outfit with a fascinator or new pin to wear. Sew up a skirt with a asymmetrical hemline, paint up a pair of sneakers, or tie dye a new tee to wear. No limits here!

:shield: House Pride Challenge: Please craft something by your chosen Hogwarts House.

:european_castle: House Unity Challenge: Please craft something inspired by another Hogwarts House, or by all of the Houses/School combined.

:alembic::test_tube: ~ Detention Challenges ~ :test_tube::alembic:
:yarn: WIP Challenge: For this challenge, please complete a Work In Progress. For this term only, you may complete this prompt 2 times!
:basket: Stash Challenge: For this challenge, please craft something solely from your stash. For this term only, you may complete this prompt 5 times!
:thread: Reparo Challenge: For this challenge, please repair something broken or alter something to work better for you. For this term only, you may complete this prompt 2 times!
:open_book: Advanced Studies Challenge: For this challenge please put in 2 hours on an ongoing OWL or NEWT assignment & be prepared to show before & after progress shots. Please note: no before & after pics = no points! For this term only, you may complete this prompt 2 times!

September - Hogwarts Express Challenge:
It’s September 1st, and that means it’s time to gather your trunk, your owl, and broomstick, board the Hogwarts Express, and head back to school for another year of magic. For this challenge you may craft something scarlet, like the steam engine, or you may go back and do any Book Club, Headmistress, or Iron Chef prompt you missed earlier in this term.

Chapter 17: The Man With Two Faces September 14th - 30th
Harry is surprised to find Quirrell in the chamber. Quirrell is trying to figure out how the Mirror or Erised works, and Harry tries to distract him by asking questions. Quirrell says he’s been working for Voldemort, and was the one to try to kill Harry at the Quidditch match, while Snape was trying to save him. He explains that Snape & James loathed each other at school. Quirrell asks his master for help with the mirror, and Voldemorts voice says to use Harry. Harry looks into the mirror and sees himself placing the Philosophers Stone in his pocket, and feels it drop into his real pocket. He lies, but Voldemort can tell. He demands Quirrell let him face Harry, so Quirrell unwraps his turban to reveal Voldemort’s face on the back of his head. Voldemort demands Quirrell seize Harry, but when Quirrell touches Harry’s skin, he is burned. They struggle, and Harry touches Quirrell’s face to keep him from getting the stone. Finally with the pain in his head building, Harry passes out.

He awakens in the hospital wing, with Dumbledore, who reveals that Quirrell is dead, and Voldemort escaped. Dumbledore explains that the reason Quirrell could not bear to touch Harry, is that Harry’s mother Lily died to save him, and that has left a deep mark of love upon Harry. He also explains that the reason Snape hates Harry (and hated James), is that James once saved Snape’s life. At the end of term feast Dumbledore surprises everyone by awarding last minute points; 50 to Ron for his game of chess, 50 to Hermione for her use of intellect & logic, 60 to Harry for courage and bravery, and 10 to Neville, for standing up to his friends. Gryffindor wins the House Cup. Meanwhile Hagrid gives Harry a book of wizard photos of his parents. The kids ride the Hogwarts Express home, and plan to meet up over the summer.

For this challenge, craft something that contains a surprise, or that surprised YOU while making it. Perhaps it has a secret ingredient to make it more healthy, like black bean brownies, or you discovered that you now love making hats after knitting your first one. Alternately you may craft something for someone whose love has marked you in your life. In addition to the suggested prompt, you may always craft something inspired by a character, scene, or situation in that chapter, provided you note what specifically inspired you in your project submission.

Masks & Scrub Caps
There continues to be a great need for handmade cloth masks for our families, our friends, our neighbors, and most of all for our health care workers. For this challenge you may complete masks for either personal/friends use, or for health care facilities who are calling for them. By also posting in the Lettuce Help Our Communities LC Challenge, you can gain 10 bonus points for each submission. By crafting for hospitals, doctors, & nurses (NOT for family & friends), you may also claim a second 10 point bonus, for a total of 35 points per submission. But please note that it only covers those going to health care workers. Items made for family & friends can earn up to 25 points. You may complete this challenge 5 times. If you have filled all 5 spaces, and are still crafting more masks, please let me know, and I can adjust this limit.

:mortar_board:~ Advanced Studies ~:mortar_board:

What are Advanced Studies?

  • Advanced Studies are more complex and challenging than typical crafting projects. They can be in any category or genre that you wish
  • You are to choose the course of study you wish to take in a particular subject. Research your desired subject, find a facet of that subject that you wish focus your advanced studies. Form a plan of action, and make your proposal. The possibilities are endless!

:hourglass_flowing_sand:How long should Advanced Studies take?:hourglass_flowing_sand:

  • Advanced Studies are more time-consuming than regular HPC classes and challenges. There is no hard and fast rule on how many hours a project should take, because speed and difficulty levels are too subjective. What we are really looking for is a project that will be a personal challenge to you. That being said…
  • Advanced Studies should generally take 3-4 weeks to complete

:memo:Proposing Advanced Studies:memo:

  • You must propose your Advanced Studies before starting so that we may be your cheerleaders and help encourage you during this more challenging craft adventure
  • When you have settled on a challenging project that will take the required amount of time that you would like to propose, post in the HPC thread using the following header:

~ ADVANCED STUDIES PROPOSAL ~
Project Name:
House:
Brief Description: (how it fits the requirements, pattern/techniques used, materials using, plan of action, expected timeline, etc.)

  • Your proposed project will be added to the ongoing list of proposed Advanced Studies projects by the Advanced Studies Examiner, @Abbeeroad
  • Please note, you may only work on up to 2 Advanced Studies project at a time. Please do not propose new Advanced Studies until your current ones are complete
  • You may propose an Advanced Studies project at any time during the semester
  • Advanced Studies can carry over to the next semester
  • If you decide to abandon and Advanced Studies project, notify your Advanced Studies Examiner, @Abbeeroad, and the log will be erased from the record. Once you have submitted to have an old Advanced Studies project erased, you can propose a new one
  • Please note , after 3 years, old Advanced Studies project will be removed from the log automatically unless an extension is requested by an active HPC member

:mortar_board:Completing Advanced Studies:mortar_board:

  • Once you propose, you may start your Advanced Studies project right away! You do not need to wait for approval to begin crafting
  • Feel free to add progress pics in the HPC thread. Advanced Studies Fridays is a great time to share!
  • Once your project is complete, post a picture of your project in the HPC using the header provided below

:sparkles: :owl: :love_letter: Note from the Headmistress…

I have updated Hermione’s Homework Planner. In doing so I made new pages for everyone who had one previously. If your previous page had any of your own notes on it, I kept the old page and added “OLD-” to the title. I plan to delete the Old pages next week, but wanted to give you all a chance to save any notes you may have had for ongoing projects. Please go through and save any notes you need, to your new page. If your old page was completely blank, it’s simply been replaced with a new one. They are still in alphabetical order, and there are a few blank pages at the end of the alphabet, in case anyone who hasn’t been using it, wishes to do so.

Meanwhile, the first Quidditch event of the summer has been posted!

June 1 - 14, 2020

It’s the start of the summer holidays, and there is sure to be plenty of quidditch in the Weasley’s orchard with Fred, George, Ron and Ginny soon, so now is the perfect time to pull out the Broomstick Servicing Kit Hermione got you for your birthday. Put the jar of Fleetwood’s High-Finish Handle Polish, the silver Tail-Twig Clippers, the brass clip-on compass, and the Handbook of Do-It-Yourself Broomcare to good use. For this challenge create something to help you enjoy the unusual summer season to come. You can crochet a water bottle cozy for socially distant hikes in the woods, turn your patio into the vacation spot you can’t travel to right now, or create a pandemic garden to keep you busy all season.

Class or Challenge Title: Book Club Ch 9
House: Gryffindor!
Project Name & Page Link: Cranberry Mustard
Brief Description: This was a quick and easy project that I flew right through this morning. I made it a few years ago and liked it, so when I found a bag of mustard seeds in the back of my cupboard over the weekend, I knew I needed to make it again. The recipe made a little more than 7 half-cup jars. They jars will go into my stash of homemade Christmas gifts, and the leftovers will be used up this week.

Project Name & Page Link: I was really excited to to see this challenge. I have had fabric to make a bag for my bike for a year. But, it never made it to the top of the to do list. This prompt was just what I needed to get it done. I altered this pattern to create a snap on purse handle that can go off and on the bike easily.

Class or Challenge Title: Hermione’s Book Club
House: Slytherin
Project Name & Page Link: Carrot and ginger soup
Brief Description: I needed a few carrots, but they only come in a huge bag, so I decided that for once I should use them before I forget about them and have to throw them. Trying out new recipes is something that comes naturally to me, and I’m having a lot of fun every time. I mean, it’s not as smooth as I would like it to be but at least it tasted really nice.

Project Name & Page Link: Stash Busting Potholders for Vicky
Brief Description: A few years ago I made a quilt for my friend Vicky, when she got married. The pattern had you make more blocks than were actually needed for the qu
ilt top, and I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with the extras. While digging through my stash making masks, I came across them again, and decided to put them to use! I used up the last of my insul-bright scraps and whipped up 3 potholders.

That carrot soup looks so good!

project - broccoli soup https://topsecretrecipes.com/big-boy-cream-of-broccoli-soup-copycat-recipe.html?category_id=92

I’ve tried a couple different broccoli soup recipies, and my family likes this one the best. It actually only has a half cup of cream, but it’s yummy. It’s hard to see in the picture, but, They also like it with some chunks of broccoli. I puree half the soup, then mix it back in. I found the recipie in a top secrets cookbook, but the link is to their website.

~ COMPLETED ADVANCED STUDIES ~
**House: Hufflepuff
**Project Name: Royal Summer Shawl by ELK Studio on Ravelry
**Brief Description: if any of you make this yourselves, note that the stars in the pattern are in the incorrect place for many of the rows. I was able to figure it out but it was confusing for a hot second. I love the result and I need to experiment with different ways to wear it. Enjoy the improvised blocking mat as well.
