CLOSED: Harry Potter Craftalong - Midsummer 2021

~ Harry Potter Craftalong ~
~ June 1st - Sept 30th, 2021~

Welcome to Hogwarts!

~ WHAT IS THE HP CRAFTALONG & HOW TO PARTICIPATE ~
The Harry Potter Craftalong (HPC) is a way to share your crafts, cheer on friends, celebrate your love of Harry Potter, and most of all to be inspired . Each term we have class prompts inspired by Hogwarts courses, Detention challenges to motivate you on mundane tasks, & Headmistress Musings inspired by the season. Complete crafts inspired by these prompts, and you earn House Points. While the prompts themselves are HP themed, your crafts do not have to be. You may craft anything you wish. You may join anytime during a term, and participate as much, or as little as you wish. At the end of each term we take an average of each Houseā€™s Points, and declare a winner!

To participate, simply read through the prompts in the post below, find one that inspires you, create a craft to fit the challenge, then post it here. Thatā€™s all there is to it!

~ HOW TO POST ~
To submit a project, cut & paste the following header into your post, and fill in the required info. You can add more than one project to your post.

Class or Challenge Title:
SPEW or LC Contest: If your item is for charity, or was created as an entry to a contest here on LC, enter that here; if not please delete this line.
House:
Project Name & Page Link: Add a link to your project posted here on Lettuce Craft, or to a recipe, pattern, etc.
Brief Description: How it fits the requirements, pattern/techniques used, any fun tips, etc.
Project Picture: REQUIRED! No picture = No House Points

~ ABOUT ELIGIBLE HPC PROJECTS ~
-Projects should take a minimum of 30 minutes to make.
-For a project to be counted, it must have a picture or a link to a picture included at the time of posting . If your item is a private piece, or is being kept secret for a Swap, you are more than welcome to send a Private Message directly to the the Headmistress.
-For any cooking/food project, in addition to a photo, you must post a complete recipe , or a link to the recipe you used. No recipe = no points.

~ HPC FAQs ~
-Do you sort me? No, you decide which house you belong to.
-I have a problem or question; who can I ask? You can send a Personal Message (PM) to Headmistress @MistressJennie . You can also ask questions in the thread.
-Do I have to craft all the classes & challenges? Nope! Just do what you want to craft.
-Does my craft project have to be Harry Potter themed? No, craft anything you like.
-This is a lot of info. How do I keep myself organized? Feel free to use Hermioneā€™s Homework Planner , a Google Doc created & updated by MistressJennie. Claim a sheet of the Homework Planner at the bottom of the page, and rename it with your userame. Please DO NOT alter the Master Sheet at the far left.

~ Craft Prompts Crescent ~
:steam_locomotive::sparkles::scroll: ~Class Prompts~ :scroll::sparkles::steam_locomotive:
:alembic: Alchemy: We are looking towards Mercury this term. Mercury is linked to the metal Quicksilver (aka Mercury) ā€“ the only metallic element that is liquid at room temperature. Please create something linked to Mercury, the smallest of the planets, which carries the name of the Roman god of commerce and the messenger of the gods. For example you could craft something miniature, or something that can be used as a carrier, like a bag or decorated envelopes.

:mage: Apparition: Besides being the means for transportation for Witches and Wizards, an Apparition is also the spirit of a dead person appearing in a form that can be seen. Craft something translucent or semi-translucent like a ghost, something that appeared to you, like the idea itself, or be inspired by someone who has passed.

:infinity: Arithmancy: Numerology is the magical discipline related to numbers that appears to be a part of, or similar/related to Arithmancy. For this term please craft something that is a part of, similar/related to another craft project.

:ringer_planet: Astronomy: Itā€™s quite common for Muggles to name their full moons. Juneā€™s full moon for example is called ā€œStrawberry Moonā€. As homework I would like you to craft something red or pink, something that contains strawberries, or something else inspired by strawberries.

:owl: Care of Magical Creatures: Sea Serpents are fearsome looking creatures with a horse-like head and snake-like bodies. Despite this no sea serpent has ever been known to hurt a human. They are found in several seas around the world including the Atlantic, Pacific, and Mediterranean seas. For your assignment this term please create something that has serpentine characteristics (such as a scarf), alternatively craft something relating to the seas.

:sparkles: Charms: One of the House Elves favorite charms is the cleaning charm. While some in the wizarding community look down on house elves, their magic is worthy of study. This term your homework will be to create something to make the cleaning of your space easier. This could be an actual cleaning item like a dishtowel, homemade soap or detergent. Alternatively you can make something to organise your space to make it easier to clean. Decorate or make a storage container, make a project bag etc.

:blue_heart: Defense Against the Dark Arts (DADA): The Hex-breaker spell is a complex one to cast, it requires a precise sequence of six steps, finishing with the wand being held in the feet. The entire world has been under a Hex for over a year. As always, it is best to work on your corner of the world first. For homework create something that helps you throw off the gloom that has accompanied this hex, make something nurturing for yourself, or for someone who has the glooms. Work with light, crystals or sparkles, to bring light into dark places. Make a dream catcher to seize the nightmares of the last year. Alternatively use the image of the steps of this hex to make a card, and mail it to someone who needs cheering.

:crystal_ball: Divination: While it is perfectly acceptable to practice your divination methods on your own, it is best to practice with other people. This semester as we begin to enter the social sphere again, I would like you to create a project with another person. This could be you and a friend or family member sharing the work on the same project, or planning a crafting date where everyone works on something different in the same space. Alternately you may choose to craft something intended as a gift for someone else.

:broom: Flying: Classes at Hogwarts focus on methods of flying related to Broomstick Travel, but they are not the only magical flying implement. In many parts of the world a Magic Carpet is preferred. These can carry many people or larger loads than are convenient on a broom. For your homework assignment, please create something that is four-cornered, flat and flexible like a carpet, something that can hold a lot of something, or something that has fringe or tassels.

:herb: Herbology: Sage wards off evil, and is associated with wisdom and good luck. Sage builds emotional strength and can help to heal grief. Your options are 1) create something to bring the user luck, 2) use your wisdom to alter/upcycle an item or to alter the pattern or technique used for your project, or 3) make something comforting for the user, or work in a medium you find comforting to use.

:blue_book: History of Magic (HoM):
ā€œUpon the signature of the International Statute of Secrecy in 1689, wizards went into hiding for good. It was natural, perhaps, that they formed their own small communities within a community. Many small villages and hamlets attracted several magical families, who banded together for mutual support and protection.ā€ -ā€œA History of Magicā€ by Bathilda Bagshot
Craft something in any medium as a homage to our very own magical hamlet of Lettuce Craft. Through a modified portkey known as The Internet we are able to communicate together from all over the world - letā€™s celebrate it!

:walking_man: Muggle Studies: This term we are studying Muggle camping. Your creation should be something that can be used out of doors. Alternately, you may cook something out of doors. For extra brownie points, watch an episode of the Muggle Anime YuruCamp and create something inspired by that. (Other episodes can be accessed free on Crunchyroll, but I highly recommend a good ad blocker.)

:test_tube: Potions: This term weā€™re going to be adventurous: I would like you to create your own potion. Craft something that is your own idea (create your own pattern, own sketch, create your own recipe or similar). I canā€™t wait what you come up with!

:scroll: Study of Ancient Runes While paging through The Tales of Beedle the Bard after itā€™s bequeathal from Dumbledore, Harry doesnā€™t recognize or understand the symbol of the Deathly Hallows. As he didnā€™t take Ancient Runes at Hogwarts, he shows Hermione. Eventually they realize the symbol as not in fact a rune, but a symbol associated with Grindelwald. Please craft something inspired by the symbol of the Deathly Hallows, or something that uses using three different components or parts.

:mouse2: Transfiguration: Bluebell flames are bright blue in appearance, and are waterproof. These magical flames can be touched and held without burning the holder. They can also be safely carried in a small object, such as a jar, without the object being damaged. This term create something that uses or holds flames (think campfire treats and fire pits) in its creation. Or alternatively craft something that is bright blue in color.

:shield: House Pride Challenge: Please craft something by your chosen Hogwarts House.
:european_castle: House Unity Challenge: Please craft something inspired by another Hogwarts House, or by all of the Houses/School combined.

:alembic::test_tube: ~ Detention Challenges ~ :test_tube::alembic:
:open_book: Advanced Studies Challenge: Put in 2 hours on an ongoing Advanced Studies project, and be prepared to show before & after progress shots.
:thread: Reparo Challenge: Repair something, alter something to suit you, or complete a large organization project.
:basket: Stash Challenge: Craft something solely from your stash. For this term only, you may complete this prompt 3 times!
:yarn: WIP Challenge: Complete a Work In Progress.

September Challenge
September is the 9th month in the Julian & Gregorian calendars. It was originally the 7th (from the Latin, septem for seven) out of 10 months. September begins with the sun in the astrological sign of Virgo (the maiden), and ends in the sign of Libra (the scales). Septemberā€™s birthstone is sapphire, and birth flowers are Forget-Me-Not, Morning Glory, & Aster. It contains the Autumn Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere and the Vernal Equinox in the Southern. It contains Banned Books Week, Tolkein Week, the beginning of Oktoberfest, Day of the Programmer, International Chocolate Day, National Peanut Day, Cream Filled Donut Day, and Pepperoni Pizza Day. Please craft something inspired by one of the many aspects of September.

:oden: :green_salad: :falafel: :ice_cream: Iron Chef Midsummer Feast Challenge :oden: :green_salad: :falafel: :ice_cream:
:ice_cream: September : Dessert

Usually accompanied by a glass of dessert wine or coffee and tea, this is a sweet and decadent course. In NJ, summer is still going strong in September! Key lime pie, boozy (or not) ice cream floats, or summer strawberry shortcake would be classic ways to say goodbye to summer.

Chapter : The Boggart in the Wardrobe September 13-26
Malfoy returns to classes with a heavily bandaged arm. It is implied that he is exaggerating the seriousness of the injury, but there is no way to prove it. Sirius Black has been sighted near Hogwarts, and Malfoy hints that Black may be connected to Harryā€™s past. In Defence against the Dark Arts, Lupin teaches the third years about Boggarts, shape-shifters that take the shape of a personā€™s worst fear. The class then take on the Boggart, forcing it to assume a shape they find amusing. When it comes to Harryā€™s turn he is sure the Boggart will turn into a Dementor but Lupin jumps in and repels the Boggart for him. Faced by Lupin, the Boggart takes the shape of a bright glowing orb. Harry is disappointed that Lupin does not let him fight the Boggart, thinking that Lupin feels he is not up to the task.

Please show us just what you are capable of by crafting something in a medium you excel at. Alternately you may craft something black in color.

:mortar_board:~ Advanced Studies ~:mortar_board:

What are Advanced Studies?

  • Advanced Studies are more complex and challenging than typical crafting projects. They can be in any category or genre that you wish
  • You are to choose the course of study you wish to take in a particular subject. Research your desired subject, find a facet of that subject that you wish focus your advanced studies. Form a plan of action, and make your proposal. The possibilities are endless!

:hourglass_flowing_sand:How long should Advanced Studies take?:hourglass_flowing_sand:

  • Advanced Studies are more time-consuming than regular HPC classes and challenges. There is no hard and fast rule on how many hours a project should take, because speed and difficulty levels are too subjective. What we are really looking for is a project that will be a personal challenge to you. That being saidā€¦
  • Advanced Studies should generally take 3-4 weeks to complete

:memo:Proposing Advanced Studies:memo:

  • You must propose your Advanced Studies before starting so that we may be your cheerleaders and help encourage you during this more challenging craft adventure
  • When you have settled on a challenging project that will take the required amount of time that you would like to propose, post in the HPC thread using the following header:

~ ADVANCED STUDIES PROPOSAL ~
Project Name:
House:
Brief Description: (how it fits the requirements, pattern/techniques used, materials using, plan of action, expected timeline, etc.)

  • Your proposed project will be added to the ongoing list of proposed Advanced Studies projects by the Advanced Studies Examiner, @Abbeeroad
  • Please note, you may only work on up to 2 Advanced Studies project at a time. Please do not propose new Advanced Studies until your current ones are complete
  • You may propose an Advanced Studies project at any time during the semester
  • Advanced Studies can carry over to the next semester
  • If you decide to abandon and Advanced Studies project, notify your Advanced Studies Examiner, @Abbeeroad, and the log will be erased from the record. Once you have submitted to have an old Advanced Studies project erased, you can propose a new one
  • Please note , after 3 years, old Advanced Studies project will be removed from the log automatically unless an extension is requested by an active HPC member

:mortar_board:Completing Advanced Studies:mortar_board:

  • Once you propose, you may start your Advanced Studies project right away! You do not need to wait for approval to begin crafting
  • Feel free to add progress pics in the HPC thread. Advanced Studies Fridays is a great time to share!
  • Once your project is complete, post a picture of your project in the HPC using the header provided below

For Midsummer, the Iron Chef Hogwarts Challenge would like you to create a 4-course feast! Each month will focus on a different course: appetizer, soup/salad, main dish, and dessert! Those who complete all four Iron Chef Challenges will win a sticker surprise!

:oden: June: Appetizer

Appetizers are usually served on small appetizer plates and feature small cuts of meat, seasonal vegetables, starches, and sauces. Get fancy with these sweet potato crostini with prosciutto, honey, and balsamic roasted figs, get spicy with some jalapeno popper cheese balls, or go sweet with goat cheese and honey bites.

I am looking forward to the new term. May sped by but next week my crafting schedule shall open up again. I love this craftalong!

This term is gonna be so much fun!

I have a question tho, about the Iron Chef Challenge, this month its appetizer, and is it any or is it the ones that are linked we have to do?
Im trying to get better at cooking, so I thought I would do the Iron Chef Challenge. And thus I have to know if it is any appetizer or the specific ones.

Iā€™m quite sure @Abbeeroad will tell you itā€™s any appetiser. She always shares some great ideas if youā€™d like to try something new though

Yes! @PrincessP is right. ANY appetizer qualifies. Your imaginationā€™s the limit. Have fun!

:sparkles: :owl: :scroll: Note from the Headmistressā€¦

I have updated the Hermioneā€™s Homework Planner with new sheets for everyone. For those of you who had notes or information on last termā€™s sheets, I have created a new sheet with your name, and relabeled your old sheet as just that, OLD. So for example, OLD-Abbeeroad. This is so you all can have a chance to transfer any info you want to save, to your new sheets, such as projects you were working on but hadnā€™t finished yet. I will delete all the old sheets next week, so be sure to save what you need.

P.S. For any of you new or returning members who donā€™t know what I mean about Hermioneā€™s Homework Planner : It is a Google Doc created & updated by me, which contains condensed versions of all the inspiration prompts listed in the second post of this thread. Most of us find this easier to read through at a glance. As new challenges are announced, like Headmistress or Iron Chef, which change monthly, I fill in the new prompt on the Master sheet at the far left, then cut & paste it into everyoneā€™s individual sheets. If you havenā€™t used it before, just click on the link above. It will send an email, asking me to grant you access. Look down at the bottom, and scroll sideways along the list of LC usernames, which are alphabetical. At the end, you will find some labeled as ā€˜Sheet#ā€™ Claim one of these numbered sheets and rename it with your userame. You are then free to make notes to yourself, save ideas and links, etc. Just please DO NOT alter the Master Sheet at the far left.

Class or Challenge Title: Detention - WIP Challenge
House: Slytherin
Project Name & Page Link: Pretty Pink Poncho (pattern)
Brief Description: My DS1 is in private school and I drive him to and from. But, sitting in the car line, waiting for dismissal gets a bit boring and reading is next to impossible with my little chatterbox (DS2) in the backseat. So, I like to have a relatively mindless, portable project to work on and this became my car project. School term ended last week, and it was time to finish it.

Class or Challenge Title: Care of Magical Creatures
House: Slytherin
Project Name & Page Link: Chartreuse Collar and Leash
Brief Description: Long and narrow and green, this leash and collar set is very snake-like. Not to mention it keeps my creature, erā€¦dog from dashing off. Everything was stash and I scavenged the clip for the leash from an old, worn-out one. My dog did a happy dance when I put it on him - heā€™s so silly!

My fellow Slytherins might appreciate this cutie. She got stuck in my (still covered) pool yesterday. I tried to find her today while it was dry, but it wasnā€™t until after it had rained a bit that she came out of hiding. I scooped her out of the pool, but she didnā€™t want to leave the net. So, I carefully picked her up and she flinched just once, then was quite content to check me out for a moment before I set her down in the grass. :green_heart: :snake:
