CLOSED - Harry Potter Craftalong - Midsummer 2022

Class: Hermiones Book Club
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Strawberry marmalade with black pepper
Brief Description: To make marmalade you need lots of heat. I was inspired by the strawberry jam-class, that was held earlier this year, but couldnt participate. And now when the strawberry season draws to an end here in Sweden, I thought it was time to try this. I got 4 jars (hadnt prepered a fifth, which I could have filled). One is for me, and three is gifts.

Recipe:
500 g strawberries
250 g jam-sugar, with pectin (I guess regular sugar is fine too. In Sweden we have this sugar that is made purley for jams and marmalades that have a perservative inside of it)
3-4 teaspoon of black pepper (not fine grind)
4 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar

Boil berries and sugar for 5 min. Then add the black pepper and balsamic vinegar and boil for another couple of minutes. Put into jars and seal tight.

Class or Challenge Title: Flying
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name & Page Link: Green Scarf/Wrap
Brief Description: I’m sure this wasn’t what most of us were thinking about for use outside at the moment, but winter never feels that far away when you live in Wisconsin! This was made to use up some inherited yarn, and when I finished I couldn’t decide whether it works better as a fat scarf or a skinny shawl.

The texture of that stitch is lovely!

Thank you! It’s just double moss stitch - easy enough to keep going during meetings or D&D games.

LC Contest: Take a Bite Out of Your Stash Challenge
House: Gryffidnor!
Project Name & Page Link: There’s Always Room for Sharks!
Brief Description: I thought I had posted this here, but in my rush to get things finished on Monday, I seem to have missed posting it here! I used heat and cooling in this project to set the gelatin. I also used sparkling shimmer sugar on the waves. Everything in it is edible! Since it was way too much for my husband & I to eat, I brought it to my neighbors, who have a 7 year old son, up to the task.

~ ADVANCED STUDIES PROPOSAL ~
Project Name: Striped Raglan Sweater
House: Slytherin
Brief Description: I’ve been expanding my knitting skills so that I can knit a sweater. Eventually, I’d like to make the perfect cardigan, but I need to start with something a bit easier. I’ll be using some of the yarn left over from the Doctor Who Scarf (and the not-quite-right colors that I had purchased), so the striping will be highly improvised. The pattern is the Ladies Classic Raglan Pullover by Jane Richmond. It’s not too complicated, with simple neck shaping, stockinette in the round, ribbed neck/cuffs/bottom edge. I’ll need to know how to do raglan increases, decreases, pick up stitches, sequester stitches, bind off in pattern, and ribbing.

ETA: yarn

That’s a great looking sweater, can’t wait to see your take on it!

ETA: You are killing me with these beautiful yarn pics! I am on a yarn embargo until the stash fits back into it’s assigned spaces and these are so alluring!

I knitted a very similar sweater as my first ever sweater! I barely knew how to knit and purl, and that was probably a good thing, because it made me fearless to try! If you can follow directions, most patterns are really not that difficult. The raglan sleeve decrease makes for a really pretty detail! Can’t wait to see!

House: Slytherin :snake:
Project Name & Page Link: King Arthur’s Banana bread
Brief Description: Heating and cooling sounds like baking to me! I had a lot of over-ripe bananas in my freezer, and a few on the counter. Time for banana bread! I made a few modifications/changes:
Used gluten free flour
Added chocolate chips
Did not add honey, so the baby could try it (there was a mini loaf with no chocolate or nuts)
Did not add the preserves/jam, because I didn’t have any.
It was delicious. I ended up with three loaves because of all the bananas I wanted to use up.

Hi Guys!! It’s AUGUST! WOW! Summer (here in the US) is flying by! Here’s the updated Iron Chef Challenge!

Japan :japan: Midsummer seems like the perfect time to channel this island country with some yaki udon, beef yakitori, or some green tea mochi.

Also - @tendstowardschaos - your AS proposal has been added to the log! Good luck!! I’m supposed to be attempting my first knitted sweater this year as well. But something tells me you’ll beat me to it!

Can I abandon my Advanced Studies Proposal, @Abbeeroad? Work pants are just not really relevant to my now 100% remote job, and I feel like it’s just sitting on the list staring at me.

Consider it abandoned! If you change your mind, just re-propose! In the meantime, feel free to propose a new AS project (or 2!).

Challenge: Chapter 21 Hermione’s Secret
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name: Flower T for SmartDoll
Project Description: Last time I tried to make a SmartDoll T it was…not great. The neckline was the biggest problem, because sewing for dolls and sewing for people can be quite different. I was really intimidated to try again, but I have some delightful fabric I want to use, and I decided to do a practice run on some different fabric, first. After finding some FABULOUS tutorials on YouTube, I was able to make this today.

Advanced Studies Friday Update
(What do you mean it isnt friday? Time has no meaning here! Right? No? Just me? ‘Kay, nice.)

I just ordered my soon to be 4 year old daughter’s “big girl bed” and now am really getting motivated to do my scary fabric craft for her little decorating makeover. She’s been on a floor bed and has chosen a (wee) loft bed (with slide, thank you very much Wayfair) so when we rearrange furniture and all that it would, no it WILL, be so nice to have her flag bunting ready to hang up, too.

That’s my current status anyway. Optimism. Haha

Its always friday somewhere! :joy:

My besties says sometimes “its always X time somewhere”, which is true. But then one time he said “its always saturday somewhere”. I was tired and it took my way too long to realised what he said. But its a saying now
