Welcome to Hogwarts!

~ WHAT IS THE HP CRAFTALONG & HOW TO PARTICIPATE ~
The Harry Potter Craftalong (HPC) is a way to share your crafts, cheer on friends, celebrate your love of Harry Potter, and most of all to be inspired . Each term we have class prompts inspired by Hogwarts courses, Detention challenges to motivate you on mundane tasks, & Headmistress Musings inspired by the season. Complete crafts inspired by these prompts, and you earn House Points. While the prompts themselves are HP themed, your crafts do not have to be. You may craft anything you wish. You may join anytime during a term, and participate as much, or as little as you wish. At the end of each term we take an average of each House’s Points, and declare a winner!

To participate, simply read through the prompts in the post below, find one that inspires you, create a craft to fit the challenge, then post it here. That’s all there is to it!

~ HOW TO POST ~
To submit a project, cut & paste the following header into your post, and fill in the required info. You can add more than one project to your post.

Class or Challenge Title:
SPEW or LC Contest: If your item is for charity, or was created as an entry to a contest here on LC, enter that here; if not please delete this line.
House:
Project Name & Page Link: Add a link to your project posted here on Lettuce Craft, or to a recipe, pattern, etc.
Brief Description: How it fits the requirements, pattern/techniques used, any fun tips, etc.
Project Picture: REQUIRED! No picture = No House Points

~ ABOUT ELIGIBLE HPC PROJECTS ~
-Projects should take a minimum of 30 minutes to make.
-For a project to be counted, it must have a picture or a link to a picture included at the time of posting . If your item is a private piece, or is being kept secret for a Swap, you are more than welcome to send a Private Message directly to the the Headmistress.
-For any cooking/food project, in addition to a photo, you must post a complete recipe , or a link to the recipe you used. No recipe = no points.

~ HPC FAQs ~
-Do you sort me? No, you decide which house you belong to.
-I have a problem or question; who can I ask? You can send a Personal Message (PM) to Headmistress @MistressJennie . You can also ask questions in the thread.
-Do I have to craft all the classes & challenges? Nope! Just do what you want to craft.
-Does my craft project have to be Harry Potter themed? No, craft anything you like.
-This is a lot of info. How do I keep myself organized? Feel free to use Hermione’s Homework Planner , a Google Doc created & updated by MistressJennie. Claim a sheet of the Homework Planner at the bottom of the page, and rename it with your username. Please DO NOT alter the Master Sheet at the far left.

:alembic: Alchemy: Greek alchemy is preserved in Medieval Greek (Byzantine) manuscripts, and yet historians have only relatively recently begun to pay attention to the study and development of Greek alchemy in the Byzantine period. Craft something inspired by the Greek flag, :greece: either in the colours or shapes used.

:mage: Apparition: Witches and wizards need to learn how to use this skill, but there are some creatures that are born with this skill, house-elves are one of those creatures. For this term, craft something inspired by house-elves, this can be food related, or related to cleaning, or maybe you want to release a house-elf and then craft something wearable.

:infinity: Arithmancy: Use your maths to divine how something will turn out, and then make it happen.

:ringer_planet: Astronomy: Lunar phases are the shapes of the moon’s directly sunlit portion as viewed from planet earth. Craft something which appears to look different depending on how you view it, such as a sculpture, a 3D papercraft or a two sided zippered pouch.

:unicorn: : Care of Magical Creatures: This term we will be studying the Chinese Fireball – a species of dragon native to China. It is also known as the Lion Dragon, red with a fringe of golden spikes around its face. Its name comes from the mushroom-shaped ball of fire it emits from its nostrils. Study this dragon by crafting something with a fringe or that uses mushrooms (fake or real).

:sparkles: Charms: This term we will be studying The Box Blasting Charm Cistem Aperio. It is used to blast open trunks, chests, boxes, or other containers. For homework consider the uses of boxes, and make a box or other storage container. The scale of the container is up to you, it can be large to contain a large amount of supplies, or tiny. Bonus credit if the container has a locking mechanism that you can use to try out the Cistem Aperio charm. Alternately, think outside the box, and craft something with an unusual material, such as crocheting with plastic bags as yarn.

:blue_heart: Defense Against the Dark Arts (DADA): We are going back to basics for our study of defensive jinxes. These are used to defend a witch or wizard from harm. For your homework make something that will act as protection, for example a garment that will protect from the cold, a body lotion that will protect against dry skin, a soap that will protect against bacteria.

:crystal_ball: Divination: Carromancy is the study of observing the forms and shapes created by wax when poured into a cold liquid. To demonstrate your mastery of this subject please create something that involves heating and then cooling. Alternatively you may create something that involves natural or unexpected shapes.

:broom: Flying: One thing about flying- It really ought to be done out of doors. For your homework do something out in the fresh air or make something for use outside.

:herb: Herbology: The Venomous Tentacula is a green, spiky, toothsome magical plant with mobile vines that try to grab living prey. The plant secretes a colorless, non-fatal poisonous juice that causes those who drink it to have a “burning” sensation inside them, and turns their skin bright purple in color. Craft something with long, dangling components such as a wind chime, macrame wall hanging or pair of earrings, or something with a surprising purple component.

:blue_book: History of Magic (HoM): In commemoration of arguably the most famous wizard of all time, Merlin, a stained glass window featuring his name was eventually fitted into the wall of the school’s History of Magic Classroom. Craft something that has different elements fused together to combine something new, or create something to honor someone important to you.

:walking_man: Muggle Studies: Muggles seem to think that magic is easy. “Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo” is claimed to be a magical incantation that can change any number of things into other items, such as a pumpkin into a carriage, or mice into horses. We wizards know that Transfiguration is very complex. For this semester, take a closer look at projects that seem to be opposite in their difficulty, then what you would at first suspect. For example, a zipper pouch can be straightforward; but when you add quilted details, or lace and trim accents, it becomes more complex. On the opposite end, a fancy cake can be made simpler by using a mix.

:test_tube: Potions: “… the beauty of the softly simmering cauldron with its shimmering fumes, the delicate power of liquids that creep through human veins, bewitching the mind, ensnaring the senses…” For your assignment create something with an end result in liquid form; perhaps a sweet summer drink for entertaining, lotion to enhance your health. Alternately you may craft something inspired by your favorite potion.

:scroll: Study of Ancient Runes Reading runes can help focus the seeker’s mind and guide decision making. What is your “go to” craft when you need a calm mind or to de-stress? Pick a small project to start and finish in one session that will help you relax, get an attitude adjustment on a sour day, or just to punctuate the end of a hard week and open up the positive energies for your next days off.

:mouse2: Transfiguration: This term we will be focussing on transfiguring in smaller steps. Transfiguring is a difficult task that needs lots of practice. For your homework, practice upcycling, or redoing a project that you were not satisfied with the first time round. You may also transfigure a supply using a familiar pattern to further practice your skills.

:shield: House Pride Challenge: Please craft something by your chosen Hogwarts House.
:european_castle: House Unity Challenge: Please craft something inspired by another Hogwarts House, or by all of the Houses/School combined.

:alembic::test_tube: ~ Detention Challenges ~ :test_tube::alembic:
:open_book: Advanced Studies Challenge: Put in 2 hours on an ongoing Advanced Studies project, and be prepared to show before & after progress shots.
:thread: Reparo Challenge: Repair something, alter something to suit you, or complete a large organization project.
:basket: Stash Challenge: Craft something solely from your stash.
:yarn: WIP Challenge: Complete a Work In Progress.

:steam_locomotive: :scissors: :apple: September Challenge :apple: :scissors: :steam_locomotive:
Summer is finally drawing to a close, and autumn is on the way. More importantly, it is time to return to Hogwarts for a new year of magical education. For this challenge, please create something that is a harbinger of autumn (apple pie anyone?). Alternately you may return to a beloved craft you haven’t indulged in for a while, or return to a pattern or material you truly love working with and always find yourself coming back to.

:earth_americas: Iron Chef Around the World Challenge! :earth_africa:
This term we’ll take our taste buds on a trip! A random country will be selected each month to serve as inspiration for new recipes, dishes, and ideas. Whether you fun inspiration in a whole dish or a single ingredient, I hope you’ll join me on this tour of flavor. Complete all 4 challenges for a sticker surprise!

September - :morocco: Morocco - Transitioning from hot to cool weather is a tricky time to cook, but a perfect time to say hello to Moroccan dishes like chicken tagine, tabbouleh salad, or meskouta orange cake.

Chapter 22: Owl Post Again September 1-30
Harry & Hermione make it back to the hospital wing. Snape accuses Harry of freeing Black, and Fudge leaves to get the Dementors removed from Hogwarts. The next day the Trio learn Lupin is leaving, after Snape outed him as a Werewolf. Lupin confirms for Harry that James’ Patronus was a Stag, and gives Harry back the Invisibility Cloak & Marauder’s Map. Harry tells Dumbledore he feels guilty for saving Pettigrew, since Pettigrew has returned to Voldemort. Dumbledore says that Pettigrew now owes Harry his life, which might be useful in future. Gryffindor wins both the Quidditch & House Cup. The Trio take the Hogwarts Express back to London. On the way, a tiny owl arrives with a letter from Sirius, that says he’s traveling far away, to avoid the manhunt, that he sent Harry the Firebolt at Christmas, and that the owl is a gift for Ron. Finally he gives Harry permission to visit Hogsmeade. Ron promises to invite Harry to the Quidditch World Cup, and Harry informs Uncle Vernon that he has a Godfather who is a convicted murderer who escaped from Wizard prison and will be checking in on him.

For this challenge, please submit a project that had both good and bad aspects to its creation. Perhaps you like how your shawl looks overall, but you found the yarn to be a pain to work with. Alternately you may craft with something you received in the post, either a supply you ordered, or something sent to you by a friend.

:mortar_board:~ Advanced Studies ~:mortar_board:

What are Advanced Studies?

  • Advanced Studies are more complex and challenging than typical crafting projects. They can be in any category or genre that you wish
  • You are to choose the course of study you wish to take in a particular subject. Research your desired subject, find a facet of that subject that you wish focus your advanced studies. Form a plan of action, and make your proposal. The possibilities are endless!

:hourglass_flowing_sand:How long should Advanced Studies take?:hourglass_flowing_sand:

  • Advanced Studies are more time-consuming than regular HPC classes and challenges. There is no hard and fast rule on how many hours a project should take, because speed and difficulty levels are too subjective. What we are really looking for is a project that will be a personal challenge to you. That being said…
  • Advanced Studies should generally take 3-4 weeks to complete

:memo:Proposing Advanced Studies:memo:

  • You must propose your Advanced Studies before starting so that we may be your cheerleaders and help encourage you during this more challenging craft adventure
  • When you have settled on a challenging project that will take the required amount of time that you would like to propose, post in the HPC thread using the following header:

~ ADVANCED STUDIES PROPOSAL ~
Project Name:
House:
Brief Description: (how it fits the requirements, pattern/techniques used, materials using, plan of action, expected timeline, etc.)

  • Your proposed project will be added to the ongoing list of proposed Advanced Studies projects by the Advanced Studies Examiner, @Abbeeroad
  • Please note, you may only work on up to 2 Advanced Studies project at a time. Please do not propose new Advanced Studies until your current ones are complete
  • You may propose an Advanced Studies project at any time during the semester
  • Advanced Studies can carry over to the next semester
  • If you decide to abandon and Advanced Studies project, notify your Advanced Studies Examiner, @Abbeeroad, and the log will be erased from the record. Once you have submitted to have an old Advanced Studies project erased, you can propose a new one
  • Please note, after 3 years, old Advanced Studies project will be removed from the log automatically unless an extension is requested by an active HPC member

:mortar_board:Completing Advanced Studies:mortar_board:

  • Once you propose, you may start your Advanced Studies project right away! You do not need to wait for approval to begin crafting
  • Feel free to add progress pics in the HPC thread. Advanced Studies Fridays is a great time to share!
  • Once your project is complete, post a picture of your project in the HPC using the header provided below

FYI, I’m still working on the updated Homework Planner. It should be ready in a day or so.

My 11 year-old is a big Harry Potter fan. She’s wondering if she and I can join as a duo, as she is too young to join LC herself.

Let me talk to the other Moderators about this. We have age restrictions on LC for a reason. While this Craftalong is Harry Potter themed, and while everyone here is polite and welcoming and no one really posts anything inappropriate, it’s not intended for children. I’ll get back to you soon.

In the meantime, @Tanath, you could take some prompts ideas and post the project to the collective fridge page, too. Then you could do some things here for yourself and tell us when she has something to post in the other board for us to ooh and ahh over.

If it makes any difference, she only reads the forum with me, so I can filter things before showing her.
Like you said, everyone is so awesome here, and I can’t really remember seeing anything really inappropriate for kids posted here. The “worst” I’ve seen is maybe some crafted “bad language”, and I think she’s already been exposed to that by her classmates anyway :woman_facepalming:

House: Slytherin
Project Name: Scrap Queen Quilt
Project Page Link: link
Brief Description: Probably one of the biggest projects I’ve ever done, this quilt represents countless hours of work. Sorting, sewing, pressing, quilting…bringing together the scraps from dozens of projects into a kaleidoscope of memories. Every inch of this project brings up memories of projects and gifts and the people I made them for. And as much as I cherish that, the back of the quilt is a simple and subdued print that won’t make me dizzy…and that side will probably be up most of the time. To keep it interesting, each of the 56 main blocks were quilted in a different free-motion design.

Class: History of Magic

Project Name: Coral Reef
Project Description: Like many libraries around the country, we’re doing the Oceans of Possibilities theme for Summer Reading. I have been lucky enough to have been tasked with making the fun decorations we’ll be using to spruce up the library. For this coral reef, I fused many elements such as pool noodle corals, bath puff anemones, and ribbon twist flora in an attempt to make one cohesive piece.

Is anyone able to tell me how to copy the Homework Planner sheet so that mine shows up as a tab at the bottom like everyone else’s? So far I’ve been able to “Copy to” but that just puts it on my personal Google drive. I’m not very good at stuff like this. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

Ok, you now have a tab on the Homework Planner. They are arranged alphabetically, so you will have to use the arrows at the bottom of the screen where the tabs are, to navigate over to yours. Usually what happens is someone requests access, and when they do, I make a tab for them. Then each term I cut & paste the new setup into everyone’s tabs.

To everyone else in the HPC, I have finally finished, and updated all the tabs in the Homework Planner. When you go to your tab, you will be able to see all the prompts for this term. Happy crafting!

Class or Challenge Title: Apparition
House: Gryffindor!
Project Name & Page Link: Scrappy Dishcloths
Brief Description: I’m itching to be crafting, but have my hands full with Ada. One of the few things I’ve been able to do in small snatches of time is a little crochet. And I do mean small. I’ve been stash busting small scraps of cotton yarn to make dishcloths. No specific pattern or plan, just using stuff up as I feel like it. (These ones alternated rows of hdc with rows of sc.) I’ve now used up the pink, black, light blue, turquoise, navy, and multicolor, up to just a couple inches of each.
