CLOSED: Harry Potter Craftalong - Ostara 2021

~ Harry Potter Craftalong ~
~ February 1st - May 31st, 2021~

Welcome to Hogwarts!

~ WHAT IS THE HP CRAFTALONG & HOW TO PARTICIPATE ~
The Harry Potter Craftalong (HPC) is a way to share your crafts, cheer on friends, celebrate your love of Harry Potter, and most of all to be inspired . Each term we have class prompts inspired by Hogwarts courses, Detention challenges to motivate you on mundane tasks, & Headmistress Musings inspired by the season. Complete crafts inspired by these prompts, and you earn House Points. While the prompts themselves are HP themed, your crafts do not have to be. You may craft anything you wish. You may join anytime during a term, and participate as much, or as little as you wish. At the end of each term we take an average of each Houseā€™s Points, and declare a winner!

To participate, simply read through the prompts in the post below, find one that inspires you, create a craft to fit the challenge, then post it here. Thatā€™s all there is to it!

~ HOW TO POST ~
To submit a project, cut & paste the following header into your post, and fill in the required info. You can add more than one project to your post.

Class or Challenge Title:
SPEW or LC Contest: If your item is for charity, or was created as an entry to a contest here on LC, enter that here; if not please delete this line.
House:
Project Name & Page Link: Add a link to your project posted here on Lettuce Craft, or to a recipe, pattern, etc.
Brief Description: How it fits the requirements, pattern/techniques used, any fun tips, etc.
Project Picture: REQUIRED! No picture = No House Points

~ ABOUT ELIGIBLE HPC PROJECTS ~
-Projects should take a minimum of 30 minutes to make.
-For a project to be counted, it must have a picture or a link to a picture included at the time of posting . If your item is a private piece, or is being kept secret for a Swap, you are more than welcome to send a Private Message directly to the the Headmistress.
-For any cooking/food project, in addition to a photo, you must post a complete recipe , or a link to the recipe you used. No recipe = no points.

~ HPC FAQs ~
-Do you sort me? No, you decide which house you belong to.
-I have a problem or question; who can I ask? You can send a Personal Message (PM) to Headmistress @MistressJennie . You can also ask questions in the thread.
-Do I have to craft all the classes & challenges? Nope! Just do what you want to craft.
-Does my craft project have to be Harry Potter themed? No, craft anything you like.
-This is a lot of info. How do I keep myself organized? Feel free to use Hermioneā€™s Homework Planner , a Google Doc created & updated by MistressJennie. Claim a sheet of the Homework Planner at the bottom of the page, and rename it with your userame. Please DO NOT alter the Master Sheet at the far left.

:steam_locomotive::sparkles::scroll: ~Class Prompts~ :scroll::sparkles::steam_locomotive:
:alembic: Alchemy: Continuing with our study of the classical planets, we are looking towards Mars this term. Mars is linked to the metal Iron, which was considered such an important discovery, a whole age of muggle time was named after it. Please create something linked to Mars, known as the ā€œred planetā€, and carries the name of the Roman god of war. Or incorporate Iron in to the item in some way, by using the colour grey or a grey metal.

:mage: Apparition: Students, We have had a number of complaints from Madam Malkin about the number of students who are apparating inside her shop. This is very disruptive and noisy. To help you remember correct etiquette of apparating, craft something that has an inside & outside, or craft something related to robes, think long and flowing, you could also be inspired by the colour of your own robes.

:infinity: Arithmancy: Bridget Wenlock, a famous 13th century witch and Arithmancer first wrote her theorem on the magical properties of the number seven on the back of an envelope, using invisible ink. Please make something inspired by the number seven. Alternatively, craft something with clear or hidden elements.

:ringer_planet: Astronomy: This term weā€™re looking at the International Space Station (ISS). Please craft something that is inspired by the USA, Europe, Canada, Japan or Russia. Or craft something that is ā€œmodularā€; this can be a single craft with multiple pieces such as nesting bowls, or one (finished) component of a larger project, such as a single quilt block for on ongoing quilt top.

:owl: Care of Magical Creatures: The Thestral is a breed of winged horse with a skeletal body, reptilian features, and bat-like wings. They are known, wrongly, as omens of misfortune, and are only visible to those who have witnessed death. Create something that brings joy and happiness, to fight off misfortune and the sadness. This can be an art journal page, a yummy recipe, or even a present for a friend.

:sparkles: Charms: This term we are looking at the beguiling area of Entrancing Enchantments As you know they can be used to draw people closer to you, this can be combined with the Muggle festival of Valentines day. For homework explore items related to entrancement, this could be delicious food to draw people into the kitchen, perfumes or perfumed items, alternatively focus on Valentines day and perform a charm related to a card, hearts or the colour red.

:blue_heart: Defense Against the Dark Arts (DADA): As you know Katie Bell was cursed by contact with an Opal Necklace. Opals come in a range of colours, but they all have a shifting pattern of colour and often fire. For homework craft something that shines or moves, Alternatively make an item of jewellery.

:crystal_ball: Divination: This term we will be borrowing some ā€œmagicalā€ creatures from Hagrid to aid us in our divination practices. We will utilizing the technique of Ailuromancy, or the study of catā€™s movements and jumps to predict future events. This method of divining is particularly useful in predicting weather. For your home work please craft something inspired by cats, or for a cat. You may alternately craft something to help protect you from the weather (i.e. - a rain hat or a parasol).

:broom: Flying: With Spring in the air our flying sessions will be accompanied by the sound of bird songs. While we fly, we might as well take the time to enjoy some music of our own. For your homework this semester please craft something inspired by one of your favorite songs. Be sure to indicate what the song is and how it sparked your crafting spirit when you turn in your assignment.

:herb: Herbology: Spring flowers are a big part of Ostara celebrations. This term, please craft something inspired by a Spring flower, whether in colour, scent, texture, or some other aspect. Make sure to include what inspired you in your description. Alternatively, as Ostara is all about new growth, craft something in a new-to-you medium.

:blue_book: History of Magic (HoM): History of Magic is one subjects where the practical use of magic is not required, rather, students must study from books to pass their O.W.L.s. Please spend researching a new skill, then demonstrate what you have learned, even in a small way. You could read a crochet book to learn a new stitch, then creating a test swatch of it; or watching a video tutorial on a quilting technique, then making a new quilt block.; or participating in an online art journal class, and show off a completed art journal page. Please be sure to provide links to to your source materials for house points.

:walking_man: Muggle Studies: Although Muggles have some really amazing inventions to accomplish what might otherwise be done by magic, many also like to conserve the resources used to power these inventions. This term, please craft something by hand, or craft something that is in some way connected with conserving power resources. Examples include using hand tools to build something, hand sewing an item, and making a bicycle basket or pannier.

:test_tube: Potions:
Note to all students: our potions ingredients are in total disarray and we even have run out of some of them. For your homework this term I would like you to craft something to organise or track stock of anything in your household. Alternately, you may make the best of dwindling supplies, by crafting solely from what you have on hand.

:scroll: Study of Ancient Runes (SoAR): In the Study of Ancient Runes, pictographs of animals are used to represent numbers, and representing the number 6 is the salamander. The maximum hours of the creatureā€™s ability to survive out of fire and the amount of legs most said creatures have contributes to its representation of the digit. For your assignment, please complete a task which includes 6 components. For example: 6 ingredients in a recipe or 6 colours in a design. Alternatively, craft something inspired by an amphibian.

:mouse2: Transfiguration: This term we will be turning cats into tea cozies. To practice please craft something related to tea time. Make yummy tea biscuits, crochet a tea cozy, or sew up a tea wallet.

:shield: House Pride Challenge: Please craft something by your chosen Hogwarts House.

:european_castle: House Unity Challenge: Please craft something inspired by another Hogwarts House, or by all of the Houses/School combined.

:alembic::test_tube: ~ Detention Challenges ~ :test_tube::alembic:
:open_book: Advanced Studies Challenge: Put in 2 hours on an ongoing Advanced Studies project, and be prepared to show before & after progress shots.
:thread: Reparo Challenge: Repair something, alter something to suit you, or complete a large organization project.
:basket: Stash Challenge: Craft something solely from your stash. For this term only, you may complete this prompt 3 times!
:yarn: WIP Challenge: Complete a Work In Progress.

:sparkles::woman_mage: ~ Headmistress Prompts ~ :woman_mage::sparkles:
May: Daily Prophet Challenge
The Daily Prophet can be a source of important information in the Wizarding World. It can also be manipulated by important people within the Ministry, and be used as a tool by them. Please craft something you learned from a trusted source, such as a quilt pattern from a magazine. Alternately you may demonstrate your own abilities at manipulation by crafting something with paper.

:lemon:  :pineapple: :carrot: May: ORANGE/YELLOW. Turmeric, mango, sweet potatoes! Bring some sunshine into your cooking this month. Try an orange loaf cake, rosemary corn on the cob, or roasted sweet potatoes.

Chapter 17: The Heir of Slytherin May 18th-31st

Harry finds Ginny unconscious, and runs to her aid. Tom Riddle approaches, holding Harryā€™s wand, and explains that he was the one to open the Chamber of Secrets 50 years ago, and frame Hagrid. He reveals that as Ginny poured her heart & soul into the diary, Tom grew stronger, and was able to pour himself into Ginny in return. He set her to reopening the chamber, and killing the school chickens, before finally having her write her own farewell and heading to the Chamber to wait. Riddle eventually reveals he is Voldemort, ā€˜the greatest sorcerer in the worldā€™ and sets the Basilisk on Harry. Harry replies that Dumbledore is the greatest sorcerer, and as a result of this loyalty, this calls Fawkes to him, carrying the Sorting Hat.

Riddle thinks these things useless, but Fawkes soon pecks out the Basiliskā€™s eyes, so it cannot kill Harry with its gaze. Harry puts on the hat and wishes for help, which arrives in the form of a sword with rubies in the hilt. The Basilisk finds Harry by scent, and as it strikes, Harry stabs it through the roof of its mouth, killing it, but gets stabbed by one of the poisonous fangs at the same time. He pulls the fang from his arm, and stabs the diary with it, killing the memory of Riddle, and reviving Ginny. Though Riddle is defeated, Harry will die of the Basiliskā€™s poison. Fawkes weeps over Harryā€™s wound, and his tears heal Harry. He & Ginny then find Ron & a still memory-less Lockhart, and Fawkes carries them back up to Moaning Myrtleā€™s bathroom.

For this challenge, please craft something in a medium you continue to grow stronger in. Alternately, you may create something healing, in either body or spirit.

What are Advanced Studies?

  • Advanced Studies are more complex and challenging than typical crafting projects. They can be in any category or genre that you wish
  • You are to choose the course of study you wish to take in a particular subject. Research your desired subject, find a facet of that subject that you wish focus your advanced studies. Form a plan of action, and make your proposal. The possibilities are endless!

:hourglass_flowing_sand:How long should Advanced Studies take?:hourglass_flowing_sand:

  • Advanced Studies are more time-consuming than regular HPC classes and challenges. There is no hard and fast rule on how many hours a project should take, because speed and difficulty levels are too subjective. What we are really looking for is a project that will be a personal challenge to you. That being saidā€¦
  • Advanced Studies should generally take 3-4 weeks to complete

:memo:Proposing Advanced Studies:memo:

  • You must propose your Advanced Studies before starting so that we may be your cheerleaders and help encourage you during this more challenging craft adventure
  • When you have settled on a challenging project that will take the required amount of time that you would like to propose, post in the HPC thread using the following header:

~ ADVANCED STUDIES PROPOSAL ~
Project Name:
House:
Brief Description: (how it fits the requirements, pattern/techniques used, materials using, plan of action, expected timeline, etc.)

  • Your proposed project will be added to the ongoing list of proposed Advanced Studies projects by the Advanced Studies Examiner, @Abbeeroad
  • Please note, you may only work on up to 2 Advanced Studies project at a time. Please do not propose new Advanced Studies until your current ones are complete
  • You may propose an Advanced Studies project at any time during the semester
  • Advanced Studies can carry over to the next semester
  • If you decide to abandon and Advanced Studies project, notify your Advanced Studies Examiner, @Abbeeroad, and the log will be erased from the record. Once you have submitted to have an old Advanced Studies project erased, you can propose a new one
  • Please note , after 3 years, old Advanced Studies project will be removed from the log automatically unless an extension is requested by an active HPC member

:mortar_board:Completing Advanced Studies:mortar_board:

  • Once you propose, you may start your Advanced Studies project right away! You do not need to wait for approval to begin crafting
  • Feel free to add progress pics in the HPC thread. Advanced Studies Fridays is a great time to share!
  • Once your project is complete, post a picture of your project in the HPC using the header provided below

Ok friends, with the new term, Iā€™ve created the new page for Hermioneā€™s Homework Planner. It is the first post, labeled ā€œOstara 2021 Masterā€. (Please donā€™t mess with/write in the Master sheet.) Iā€™m going to give you all a couple days to save or copy any info you want to from our old Yule Term, then Iā€™ll go in and cut & paste the new page into each of your individual pages. Iā€™m going to try to do that Friday, so be sure to save any info you want by then!

Thank you to everyone that helps with this craftalong. It always helps my motivation, and creativity. Are there still open positions for professors, or are they filled?

Project Name & Page Link: Quilting Charm Bracelet
Brief Description: This bracelet was a special creation. The woman who requested it, had me make it for her husbandā€™s sister, whom he just found out about, at the age of 75! His newly discovered sister is 76, and loves to quilt, and loves the color purple, so I used lilac, amethyst purple, and grey Czech glass beads, and some hematite stone beads. The charms include a Safety Pin, Button, Needle & Thread, Thimble, Quilt Square, Measuring Tape, Trio of Buttons, Rotary Cutter, I Love Quilting, Sewing Machine, Scissors, Sewing Machine Bobbin, Iron, and Ruler. I used to make so many charm bracelets, but I havenā€™t made many lately, and this one was such a joy to work on. I loved the cute little sewing charms. (I almost swooned when I found the tiny rotary cutter!) And I have to admit, Iā€™m a sucker for purple too, so I loved the color palette requested.

Welcome! The Ravenclaws are working on some tricky little portkey charms. Bookmarks are just tiny portkeys, very useful for finding a place youā€™ve left (or for sending someone else!).

Conjure a bookmark to create a portkey. It can be any medium and as simple or elaborate as you want.

Portkey bookmarks can also have a charm of their own. Maybe they hide a secret magnet, have a space for taking notes, or they fold and transform into something else.

Weā€™re even sneaking a few (mostly harmless) portkeys into the Muggle world as found art. Leave a bookmark for someone else to find, maybe tucked into a volume at your local library or traded in a book exchange. It could point to a favorite passage or be themed to the book, but sharing art and reading is the goal.

There arenā€™t any house points awarded for Portkey bookmarks, but there will be a small prize at the end of the term for the ticket pulled from the Goblet of, um Inspir(ation)! (Thank you, @Edel!)

:crystal_ball: Earn 1 ticket for each bookmark

Brief Description: I have to admit somethingā€¦ Iā€™m not fond of cats. Theyā€™re okay. I donā€™t hate cats. But I donā€™t particularly like cats. Plus, Iā€™m terribly allergic to them. But one cat Iā€™ve always loved is Crookshanks. So I give you a Crookshaks the Ginger Cat inspired quilt block.
