CLOSED: Harry Potter Craftalong - Yule 2020/21

~ Harry Potter Craftalong ~ Yule Term ~ CLOSED
~ October 1st, 2020 - January 31st, 2021~

Welcome to Hogwarts!

~ WHAT IS THE HP CRAFTALONG & HOW TO PARTICIPATE ~
The Harry Potter Craftalong (HPC) is a way to share your crafts, cheer on friends, celebrate your love of Harry Potter, and most of all to be inspired . Each term we have class prompts inspired by Hogwarts courses, Detention challenges to motivate you on mundane tasks, & Headmistress Musings inspired by the season. Complete crafts inspired by these prompts, and you earn House Points. While the prompts themselves are HP themed, your crafts do not have to be. You may craft anything you wish. You may join anytime during a term, and participate as much, or as little as you wish. At the end of each term we take an average of each House’s Points, and declare a winner!

To participate, simply read through the prompts in the post below, find one that inspires you, create a craft to fit the challenge, then post it here. That’s all there is to it!

~ HOW TO POST ~
To submit a project, cut & paste the following header into your post, and fill in the required info. You can add more than one project to your post.

Class or Challenge Title:
SPEW or LC Contest: If your item is for charity, or was created as an entry to a contest here on LC, enter that here; if not please delete this line.
House:
Project Name & Page Link: Add a link to your project posted here on Lettuce Craft, or to a recipe, pattern, etc.
Brief Description: How it fits the requirements, pattern/techniques used, any fun tips, etc.
Project Picture: REQUIRED! No picture = No House Points

~ ABOUT ELIGIBLE HPC PROJECTS ~
-Projects should take a minimum of 30 minutes to make.

-For any cooking/food project, in addition to a photo, you must post a complete recipe , or a link to the recipe you used. No recipe = no points.

~ HPC FAQs ~
-Do you sort me? No, you decide which house you belong to.
-I have a problem or question; who can I ask? You can send a Personal Message (PM) to Headmistress @MistressJennie . You can also ask questions in the thread.
-Do I have to craft all the classes & challenges? Nope! Just do what you want to craft.
-Does my craft project have to be Harry Potter themed? No, craft anything you like.
-This is a lot of info. How do I keep myself organized? Feel free to use Hermione’s Homework Planner , a Google Doc created & updated by MistressJennie. Claim a sheet of the Homework Planner at the bottom of the page, and rename it with your userame. Please DO NOT alter the Master Sheet at the far left.

:alembic: Alchemy: Continuing with our study of the classical planets, we are looking towards the Sun this term. The Sun is linked to the metal Gold. Please create something linked to the Sun or incorporate Gold in to the item in some way, either the metal or the colour.

:mage: Apparition: Underage Apparition is tracked by the Ministry via the Trace. For this term please craft something you need to keep track of; like how many masks there are in a row, or something you traced or transferred onto another craft. Alternate you can craft something inspired by the different departments of the Ministry of Magic.

:infinity: Arithmancy: Bridget Wenlock was the first to establish the magical properties of the number seven. She was extremely protective of her theorems and therefore wrote most of her ideas in invisible ink, which she then sent to her cousin as a letter. Please craft something with a hidden property, like pockets, or cupcakes with a hidden filling, alternately you could craft something you’re going to send to someone else.

:ringer_planet: Astronomy: This term we will learn about the “Lupus” constellation, in honour of our dear professor Lupin. Please craft something with a “Wolf” in mind (as usual, think outside the box if you can).

:owl: Care of Magical Creatures (CoMC): Bowtruckles are small wood-colored creatures that are found in trees often used for wand-making. Their long, thin fingers are used to find and eat wood lice and can be used to defend themselves and their tree homes. For homework this term please create something with something long and thin like the bowtruckles fingers. Or craft something that brings protection to trees. This can be anything from an actual bowtruckle to something that replaces paper somehow.

:sparkles: Charms: Due to the plague currently afflicting the Muggle world, there is a lot of sadness and fear around. So this year we are going to focus on cheering charms. Make something that will cheer someone up, (this can be you) or make something that makes you smile.

:blue_heart: Defense Against the Dark Arts (DADA): This year we will be learning how to defend against all manner of dark associated creatures. In particular we will study the vampire. For homework craft something inspired by vampires and their lore, or inspired by the colour red, or use garlic in your craft.

:crystal_ball: Divination: This term we will focus our studies on the technique of Palmistry. Palmistry uses the characteristics of a person’s hand to determine what the future holds for them. To demonstrate your knowledge in the art of palmistry please craft something incorporating the imagery of hands, the number 5 (representing the fingers), or delicate line work (representing the fine lines on our palms).

:broom: Flying: If you are flying in the Northern Hemisphere this semester you may find your visibility hampered by snow and fog. Therefore, please craft something that is gray in color, is lacy, or that was difficult to see during the crafting process.

:herb: Herbology: Astragalus has drooping, white flowers, and ferny, green foliage. It’s frequently used as an immune system booster, as well as for treating hay fever. It is also excellent for alleviating anxiety. Your options this semester include 1) include white or green in your creation 2) create something to help protect you from illness or the elements 3) create something soothing or comforting or 4) work in a medium that you find soothing or comforting.

:blue_book: History of Magic (HoM): We’re going to look at more recent History. Hogwarts History actually. We all have heard the stories about The Marauders and their map! Please craft something inspired by Messrs Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs, by the Marauder’s map, or by traveling.

:walking_man: Muggle Studies: Muggles have come up with some incredibly clever ways to compensate for not having magic. We have a very full term ahead of us, but please focus on just one of the following: 1) Muggle Tech such as the internet, computers, electricity, powered tools, etc. 2) Muggle Handicrafts – things we normally accomplish by magic, but that Muggles do by hand such as knitting, hand sewing, crocheting, and carving to name just a few.

:test_tube: Potions: The Muggle world seems to be quite a chaos right now (health, politics etc), and it does affect us here at Hogwarts as well. Because of this we will be learning to make the “Draught of Peace” this term. Please make something that would help you in the event of an anxiety attack/something to make you feel safe.

:scroll: Study of Ancient Runes (SoAR): Ancient runes are written in an ancient language that needs to be translated for us to understand their meaning. For this term please craft something that needs to be translated in order to be understood, or something which has strange markings on it. Maybe it’s an ancient recipe someone translated, or a knitting pattern which is a mystery to most people who don’t knit, alternatively you could craft something that has words or strange markings on it.

:mouse2: Transfiguration: Switching spells is the art of exchanging physical features between two targets. Practice your ability to switch two objects this term by substituting one item for another in your craft. This can be altering a recipe by substituting a vegetarian alternative for the meat or simply replacing a different weight of yarn in a pattern.

:shield: House Pride Challenge: Please craft something by your chosen Hogwarts House.

:european_castle: House Unity Challenge: Please craft something inspired by another Hogwarts House, or by all of the Houses/School combined.

:alembic::test_tube: ~ Detention Challenges ~ :test_tube::alembic:
:open_book: Advanced Studies Challenge: Put in 2 hours on an ongoing Advanced Studies project, and be prepared to show before & after progress shots.
:thread: Reparo Challenge: Repair something, alter something to suit you, or complete a large organization project.
:basket: Stash Challenge: Craft something solely from your stash. For this term only, you may complete this prompt 3 times!
:yarn: WIP Challenge: Complete a Work In Progress.

January - Foe Glass Challenge
January 2nd-31st
A Foe-Glass is a Dark Detector that looks like a mirror, but instead of a reflection it shows the enemies of its possessor. The figures appear as “shadows” but become clearer and more visible as the enemies get closer to the possessor. For this challenge contemplate the foes that plague your crafting time. Dinners that must be cooked, pets that demand cuddles, or internet distractions. Fight back against these banes of crafting, and set aside time to work on something YOU want to make. Not something you HAVE to make for someone/some event that pops up. Set aside the time to craft something you want to craft with no distractions.

Chapter 9: The Writing on the Wall January 25th-February 7th
“Hearing voices no one else can hear isn’t a good sign, even in the wizarding world.” —Ron Weasley

Upon finding the Trio at the scene of the crime, Argus Filch and Prof. Snape suggest Harry be punished for killing Mrs. Norris. Dumbledore however, says that Mrs. Norris has simply been petrified, and that it was powerful dark magic that no second year student could perform. He declares that they will use Prof. Sprout’s Mandrakes, to create a draught that will revive Mrs Norris, once the Mandrakes are fully mature. Meanwhile Hermione wants to research the Chamber, so she persuades Prof. Binns to tell the class about it during History of Magic. He explains that one of the founders of Hogwarts, Salazar Slytherin, got into an argument with the others about whether Muggle-born students should be admitted. Eventually the rift grew too large and Slytherin left the school. According to legend, he built a secret chamber that could only be opened by his true heir, contains a monster that only they could control and that, once released, will purge the school of all Muggle-borns. Binns unsuccessfully tries to assure the class that the Chamber does not actually exist and that the school has been searched many times in vain.

For this challenge, go with the voice only you can hear. Craft whatever it is your heart or mind are telling you to make. Alternately, you can craft something you’ve been petrified to try before.

:mortar_board:~ Advanced Studies ~:mortar_board:

What are Advanced Studies?

  • Advanced Studies are more complex and challenging than typical crafting projects. They can be in any category or genre that you wish
  • You are to choose the course of study you wish to take in a particular subject. Research your desired subject, find a facet of that subject that you wish focus your advanced studies. Form a plan of action, and make your proposal. The possibilities are endless!

:hourglass_flowing_sand:How long should Advanced Studies take?:hourglass_flowing_sand:

  • Advanced Studies are more time-consuming than regular HPC classes and challenges. There is no hard and fast rule on how many hours a project should take, because speed and difficulty levels are too subjective. What we are really looking for is a project that will be a personal challenge to you. That being said

  • Advanced Studies should generally take 3-4 weeks to complete

:memo:Proposing Advanced Studies:memo:

  • You must propose your Advanced Studies before starting so that we may be your cheerleaders and help encourage you during this more challenging craft adventure
  • When you have settled on a challenging project that will take the required amount of time that you would like to propose, post in the HPC thread using the following header:

~ ADVANCED STUDIES PROPOSAL ~
Project Name:
House:
Brief Description: (how it fits the requirements, pattern/techniques used, materials using, plan of action, expected timeline, etc.)

  • Your proposed project will be added to the ongoing list of proposed Advanced Studies projects by the Advanced Studies Examiner, @Abbeeroad
  • Please note, you may only work on up to 2 Advanced Studies project at a time. Please do not propose new Advanced Studies until your current ones are complete
  • You may propose an Advanced Studies project at any time during the semester
  • Advanced Studies can carry over to the next semester
  • If you decide to abandon and Advanced Studies project, notify your Advanced Studies Examiner, @Abbeeroad, and the log will be erased from the record. Once you have submitted to have an old Advanced Studies project erased, you can propose a new one
  • Please note , after 3 years, old Advanced Studies project will be removed from the log automatically unless an extension is requested by an active HPC member

:mortar_board:Completing Advanced Studies:mortar_board:

  • Once you propose, you may start your Advanced Studies project right away! You do not need to wait for approval to begin crafting
  • Feel free to add progress pics in the HPC thread. Advanced Studies Fridays is a great time to share!
  • Once your project is complete, post a picture of your project in the HPC using the header provided below

The Great Hufflepuff Assignment Spreadsheet

:cookie: The Great Hufflepuff Virtual Cookie Exchange :cookie:

Ready to start your Holiday Baking Game with some tried and true recipes tested and given the seal of approval by a house that knows a thing or two about cookies? The Hufflepuff’s have got you covered!

Recipe #1: Reese’s Chewy Chocolate Cookies
Tested By: @Trillian
What makes these cookies so good? The chocolate cookie base here is easy to make and a perfect foil for just about any inclusion. Don’t like peanut butter chips? Throw in some M&Ms, crumbled up Andes Mints, or anything you can find in your pantry. The results won’t disappoint.
Tips or Tricks to Share: The cookies can be a little buttery, so if you want to cut back on that ingredient you’ll probably be okay. And as always with chocolate baked good it can be hard to tell when they are done, so the first cookie sheet is a bit of a gamble. You get to keep those for yourself.

Kitchen Sink Cookies by Trillian, on Flickr

Recipe #2: Cherry Bakewell Cookies
Tested By: @seeuudee
Tips or Tricks to Share: Make a double batch because these will disappear quickly!

Ingredients
225g/8oz Unsalted Butter at room temperature
150g/5oz Caster Sugar
275g/10oz Plain White Flour
1/4tsp Salt
1 Large Egg Yolk
1tsp Vanilla Extract
100g/4oz Flaked Almonds
100g/4oz Glacé Cherries roughly chopped
For the drizzle:
200g/7oz Icing Sugar
1tsp Almond Extract
Tap water

In a large bowl add the butter, sugar and salt. Whisk until pale and creamy. Add the egg yolk and vanilla extract. Whisk together until all the ingredients are combined. Add the flaked almonds to one side of the bowl, then add the flour to the other side. Put the cherries on top of the flour and gently mix them in the flour with your fingers – this will stop the cherries sticking together and ensure they are distributed evenly throughout the cookie dough. Mix all the ingredients together until they are thoroughly combined.

Wipe the worktop with a clean damp cloth. Lay some cling film over the damp surface – it should stay in place. Place half of the cookie dough onto the cling film and roll into a log shape approx. 4cm/1.5″ diameter. Repeat with the other half of the cookie dough. Place both cookie logs into the fridge to chill until firm – approx. 1 hour. When the cookie logs are firm enough to slice, preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan, gas mark 4, 350F. Remove the cookie logs from the fridge and slice into 1.5 cm discs.

Line a baking tray with parchment paper and place the cookies onto the baking tray, allowing room between each cookie, as they do spread whilst baking. Place into the oven and bake for 15 minutes. Do not bake for longer as the cookies will become too brittle once cooled. After 15 minutes cooling transfer the cookies to a cooling rack.

When completely cooled the cookies are ready to be iced. Mix icing sugar and almond essence and add water a little at a time to a consistency that can be drizzled. Drizzle icing over cookies.

With the winter holidays coming up, I’m really excited to see what everyone is working on. I have my first Advanced Studies proposal to submit!

~ ADVANCED STUDIES PROPOSAL ~

Project Name: Cross Stitch Portrait
House: Hufflepuff
Brief Description:

I want to take on a pretty ambitious 8x8” cross stitch portrait as my AS project. My younger brother passed three years ago, and I turned one of his last selfies into a pattern using this tool.

My pattern uses about 8 shades of red alone, so I know this will be a beast of a project emotionally and stitch wise, but I think that it will be good emotional labor for me and a good gift for my parents once completed.

Slytherin common room

Slytherin house is hosting a Halloween party!

Follow these prompts and attend! From October 7th-October 31st you will have the opportunity to complete these prompts. Those that complete all five prompts will receive a special spooky piece of art

Reminder: these are not for house points and can be posted along with other prompts. Just be sure to label that you are turning in a Halloween party prompt in the header so I know.

Invitations: to start we need to get the word out about our little soirée. To do so create something using paper in its creation.

Decorations: we have been given the Great Hall to decorate for our party. Halloween has a traditional color palette. Use orange, black, green and/or purple in a craft of your choice.

Snacks: you can’t have a good party without some yummy delicacies. So whip up a spooky edible to add to the spread.

Games: a good party isn’t complete without a fun game or two to bring memorable joy to the occasion. Craft something that brings joy to someone else.

Costumes: to finish off getting this party started you must arrive in appropriate garb. Create something wearable for the festivities.

I completely forgot to post the new Iron Chef Challenge yesterday! D’oh!

October Secret Ingredient: Persimmon!
Try this seasonal fruit in a persimmon bread, jam, or maybe as part of a spiced persimmon bourbon old fashioned!

This term I’m also offering a special treat to anyone who completes all 4 Iron Chef Challenges. A custom sticker!

Good luck and happy cooking!

Class or Challenge Title: Muggle Studies
House: Slytherin :snake: :thread:
Project Name & Page Link: Festive Deer Mug Rug
Brief Description: This was totally improvised, so there is no pattern to share. The link takes you to my Completed Project posting on LC, which has more details & photos. the TL/DR is that this is an item for a non-LC personal swap, and it is my first time doing quilt piecing, first time making binding bias tape (badly), and first time attaching said tape.
This Muggle handi-craft is very tedious, but I’m liking it. it is approx. 11"x 7".

That’s fun and great work for a new skill-set! It’s very “Patronus in the Forbidden Forest” to my HP obsessed mind.

Thanks! It would be perfect for a Patronus themed thing if the background was a dark blue.

Ooh, yeah, that would be even more patronusy.

Awesome mug rug, @CraftsUntold! I would never know this was your first time quilt piecing or making binding - my attempts still don’t look as nice and I’ve tried several times!

Kicking off the new term!

Class Title: Divination
House: Hufflepuff
Project Name & Page Link: https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/20953/green-tomato-raspberry-jam/
Brief Description: I used the number 5, with 5 cups of green tomatoes to make this Green Tomato Raspberry Jam. The recipe calls for 4, so I adjusted everything. It is over the top sweet, and unsuprisingly tastes a lot like raspberry jello. I will use it in raspberry jam cookies, etc. But not like normal jam on bread. Not a recipe I will likely make again.
