Very awesome shelves and so much storage. What a win.
They look fantastic! Perfect to make your space even more functional for you to create art! I love how this was a collaborative couple effort!
My new garage reconfiguration is scheduled for July 14! This means I will be able to park my car in the garage over the upcoming winter!
@AntBee It’s so frustrating when it seems like every other person involved in the process of simply getting a dang appliance (or deck rail piece) can’t seem to do it right! We went two years w/o a dishwasher and finally got one a year and a half ago and I didn’t realize how much I truly would LOVE the dishwasher. I still LOVE it even after the novelty has worn off. Not that there isn’t plenty of handwashing in my life, but it’s so much better.
OK! There has been a lot of progress on the Big Bookcase Project this week! I believe it was Tuesday when I got the first batch of post-practice shelves were made and set into the cases just to give us a little “amuse books.”
On Thursday, I finally received the last pieces of trim and moulding and got them installed on Friday, except the base shoe which will go in after I lay the last course of the flooring, but it’s set in place in this pic.
On Friday, I got 24 more shelves cut and today I started adding the trim pieces to them. I also started testing out stain colors and combinations as well as practiced flush cutting plugs. I think I’m going to need more wood glue to finish the trim pieces and installing plugs.
Yay!! It’s really starting to look like a proper bookcase!
I’m so tired of paying a lot for appliances or certain services, only to have to spend hours returning stuff because it’s damaged, not working properly, documentation is mission etc. I just spent some time getting the official installation paperwork for the a/c unit, that we need for insurance purposes, I’ve been promised by the guy that he’s going to send it over! Hope he actually does. We ordered a replacement ceiling fan online and it should be on its way. Hopefully we’ll have it installed before it’s warm again next week.
In fall, Mr. Imma is going to be away for a couple of days and that’s when I want to paint the stairs, so I guess that’s my next project! Before the stairs can get painted I’d like to have the stairwell (walls and ceiling) painted, but I’m looking for a contractor for that - hopefully I can find someone who’s willing to do such a small job! It’s only a small stairwell, but it’s pretty high, I’ve tried and failed to do it myself using an extension pole. To do a good job I think you need scaffolding, which I don’t have. I think a pro can do this in a few hours.
I hope you can get painters in there to do your stairwell while Mr Imma is away! Stairwells are a pain in the rear for sure and definitely should be done using at least special ladders, if not a plank setup or scaffold.
I’ve started attaching the front moulding to the last dozen shelves this morning! WOO! And speaking of clamps, I keep forgetting to share that I got to use a clamp for holding apart (vs. holding together) for the first time when I was adding the last vertical trim piece last week. Cooooool!
Anyway, I’m also testing stain colors and color mixes.
So close! I’m excited to see what color you’re staining them.
Thanks! I’m excited to see what color I pick, too! I think that I have it figured out, but I will look again tomorrow and also test it with the finishing wax.
My sister and her husband stayed in our guest room last week. I was glad to get feedback from them on things I can do to improve the room.
My sister gave me some simple fixes:
waste basket for the room
tissues
hooks on the door
Of course, I made some changes just by observing them:
changed orientation of the queen size bed–what a difference! The room looks twice as big!
fix existing curtains to be totally black out—there are gaps that I need to sew or pin shut
clear out a space in the closet for guests to hang clothes (right now, I have all of my knitting/crochet ongoing and WIP projects hanging in most of it!)
get air filter
chair or something to sit on
charging station for phones and ipads
small fridge for drinks and water (like a little cube)
She also said hooks were needed in the guest bath and that I needed to buy better shampoo…ha ha…I send my sister luxury shampoo but don’t use it myself, so guess I need to add it to this bathroom.
All in all, these little things will be easy enough to do before her next visit in November!
You’ll be like a boutique hotel! But the stuff in the minibar will be gratis!
Your guests are never going to want to leave
But they all sound like very simple updates that would improve the room a lot. As a guest anywhere it’s always great to be able to have a place for clothes, chargers, wet towels etc.
We received the new ceiling fan, and our contractor fixed the stairs to the attic! So I’m going to get my summer clothes first, and then we’ll put up the ceiling fan. I emptied out my closet this morning and you can see how much work we did just from the contents of my closet - I have so many sweaters, cardigans, ponchos, warm PJs, because our house used to be so cold all winter! I’m going to keep a few of them just in case, but most of it is going to go.
Well, the guest room is next to my craft room so I will probably be hitting the fridge more than my guests!
I have recently been wishing that we had a source for ice upstairs. This time of year, I really want my bedside water to be well below room temp for middle-off-the-night sips. I have an insulated cup and starting out with a few ice cubes makes it chilled all night. I know icy beverages are very American and this American really wants no part of 67-degree water!
Counters installed and only one drawer front missing. It should be inthis week.
I had to empty all the lowers which gave me a chance to clean them again and then clean them after the install. It was easier with no countertops to reach some deep corners, then touch up again after install.
When we took the sink out we could not get the water turned all the way off, even though we had done it several times in the last month. I got to empty the bucket frequently while my DW went to work and then picked up parts and a friend. I could have turned off the water to the whole house, but it was going to be too long a time to be without facilities. All fixed now with working turn offs.
The sink and faucet will be installed tomorrow.
Tiling the backsplash will have to wait until after a two week vaca with camping in the woods, friends, floating in Lake Michigan, and such. It’s been so hot and muggy here that I need a break.
Still a work in progress.
WOW! Your kitchen looks soooo nice! You’re so close and by the time you go on your vacation, you’ll be at a really good stopping point. You’ll be able to come back refreshed and renewed.
And the sink is half installed. The days are not long enough.
I hope that today is the day for the sink and faucet. Of all the parts of a kitchen to go without, I think that the sink is the hardest. Or at least it felt that way near the end of our kitchen reno several years ago. Oddly, washing dishes in the bathtub grossed me out more about showering where the dishes has been washed than washing dishes where we showered.
I just finished washing dishes in the sink. I hope we finish up today. I did think ahead and made a big batch of potato salad and picked up a roasted chicken. So no cooking for a.few days.
The counter looks great! Everything looks great! What kind of tiling are you putting in?
Backsplash is subway tile in burnt red to burnt orange. We had copper ceiling tiles before (previous owner) and we like the warm tones. It’s hard finding any other tile than gray or white. Blue and some green are available. But copper tones? Not much. I did find a beautiful copper tile that was so out of budget! But so yummy. I can’t wait to see the tile installed. It will cozy up the kitchen.
Definitely bringing the coppery tones! It’s such a shame that in so many products the affordable options are so limited.
