Home decor and renovation craftalong

We have a large high-tech innovation district in our city, with over 10.000 researchers and engineers working there. Guess what kind of money these people make, and what they look like. Neither of us actually work there, but especially in our area it’s even more unwise than usual to think dressed casually = no money. I was also surprised because we felt like we had a genuine connection with the salesman.

@AIMR very smart to leave the expensive things at home! No need for anyone to know.

@J-squared Very true! I worked at a dry cleaner’s on Saturdays when I was in highschool and some of the worst looking customers would bring in very fancy clothes. The type of people that owned horses and did their Saturday morning chores in their barn clothes.

We ordered the sofa! We got a fair deal on it and we’re paying roughly what we had budgeted, for a sofa that we really like and is comfortable for both of us, and looks like it should last us a while (there’s a 10 year warranty). The lady we spoke to said she’d have to submit the quote again, because it was deleted by the previous person, but she said it would be almost the same as the one we received except for a few minor details. The details being the name of the salesperson and the discount we’re getting  I really, really hope she’s going to rub it in when her coworker returns. That coworker is just a salesperson, not an owner or management, so we have no issues ordering from this company. We’re just waiting on payment info for the deposit and then the sale is final!

In three weeks there’s a huge fabric fair in my city, so we’re getting a sample from the sofa fabric to take with us and hopefully buy fabric for the living room curtains. We’ll have dozens of vendors at one place and usually there are special deals on the fair as well. We’ll need about 15 yards of double-width curtain fabric, so any discounts would really add up. Curtains can get really expensive when you buy them ready-made, so hopefully we can find fabric there. It’s not my favourite thing to sew but if a day of boring sewing can save me hundreds of €, I’ll do it.

I really don’t mind sewing curtains…AFTER all the measuring and cutting is done! I have made curtains for our homes all my married life. In one of our rented homes, the owner asked if I would leave them in exchange for the last month rent! Since they were custom made for his windows, I agreed.

Now, I have taken them in the past and managed to cut them down to fit other windows. No one will have curtains like yours! I am excited for you! As a matter of fact…my husband’s bathroom window has an ugly blanket hanging on it that I have wanted to replace for 4 years now! He is going to be out of town for a week…now is the time to do it! ha

Congratulations! I’m excited to see your new sofa andemphasized text your custom curtains! I’m so glad that your feeling about buying from that store wasn’t ruined by a dumb move on one salesperson’s part. I hope you find the perfect fabric at a great price at the fair, too. Allllll the time and effort you and your husband have put into this HUGE project is really coming to fruition.

Homemade curtains for a whole month of rent, that sounds like a pretty good deal! Especially if they’re a non-standard size that you’re unlikely to use again in the next house.

I don’t mind sewing curtains that much, but the pre-sewing tasks are annoying and boring. Especially because these living room curtains are going to be huge, as well as fussy - floor-to-ceiling, pleated curtains. But they’ll be nice. I’ve borrowed my mum’s serger, so that will speed it up. And I’m sure I’m going to be really happy when it’s done. I’ve already finished the curtains for the bedroom and my craft room, but those windows are much smaller (still need to order the rails so I can put them up). Our old living room curtains were the perfect size for Mr. Imma’s studio so these are re-used. I also sewed these but that was a long time ago.

It looks like I won’t be able to re-use the kitchen curtain, but maybe I can find another purpose for it. It’s made of 1950s vintage fabric and just too cute to go to waste.

You are definitely going to have to show them off! Since I am in a rental unit, I did not want to make any holes in the wall or woodwork, so I ordered special brackets that go into the window frame on top. Amazon had the best deal on curtain rods…I got in black and have been very happy with the quality.

That’s so messed up. I work at a furniture store outlet, and for floor samples invoices are only good for a day or 2 if someone needs to go home and measure or think about it, because we can’t really hold stuff that hasn’t been paid for, since someone else might come in and want it/be ready to take it right then. But if it’s for something that’s being ordered why would you not just leave the invoice available? For online orders we leave invoices open for like, ever lol.
I’m glad you were able to get your sofa though! And give a nicer person commission.

I don’t get it either, the price was valid for 14 days, so it makes no sense at all to me to delete it before that time. Even if you are convinced someone isn’t going to buy, we’re not in 1998 anymore when hard drive capacity was an issue.

We’ve been making progress on some other spaces so I can slowly really start to think about my craft room. I still have to try out the paint samples I got, hopefully I’ll get around to doing that this weekend. Then furniture! I’m keeping my Ikea Expedit and maybe I can also claim another one that used to be in the living room. They are so extremely convenient for craft supplies.

I agree about big curtains… all the measuring and squaring up big pieces of fabric! Sigh. I have a floor to ceiling, pleated curtain on my list as well and am both excited and the opposite for it.

Well, we’re all but done with TheMisterT’s new range (GE Cafe Dual Fuel). & downdraft (Zephyr) installation! FINALLY.

In the photos you can see why we had to have a downdraft rather than adding a hood - we simply can not lose those upper cabinets on either side. The (frustrating) corner-installation of the range at least allowed room for most of the stuff needed for the Zephyr downdraft - the only one that would work at all in our situation.

That said, having ventilation in the kitchen is going to make a huge difference in our quality of life! And because the ducting is only about 4’ / 1.33 m this thing really SUCKS. The air, I mean. And having that light is awesome, too.

TheMisterT is VERY excited about this and really geeking out with his nightly dinner making so far. The center grill can be replaced with a griddle which he’s already put into action, the bottom is a warming drawer rather than a storage drawer and he’s used that, too. I will be putting the oven to use for cupcakes later this week. FUN!

What’s left to do: A little trim piece on either side of the stove top. Our counter was raised a little in that corner a few years ago to level it out where the foundation had settled in that corner. Too high for the adjustable feet to compensate, so a wood base was made to go under the feet at installation. It needs to be painted or stained to disappear. The propane company need to come fill the tank, which only has a little bit in it.

Y’all - our installer, who did an AMAZING job, was here for over 9 hours! Since he arrived at 3:00p, he left verrrrry early the next morning. Dang.

It looks really great there! And it will give you delicious food for years and years to come, when you’ve totally forgotten what a hassle it was to put it in.

Looks awesome! I’m so happy for you guys getting that done, and for TheMisterT’s culinary adventures.

Thanks, everyone! Yes, totally worth the hassle and expense. At least so far. And having kitchen ventilation will make our house a lot nicer to live in, especially when the weather is too cold for open windows. Or too hot or too smoky, for that matter!

We didn’t have ventilation either before this kitchen, and the difference is huge! Not just for heat or smoke, but I have already started to notice our kitchen barely gets dirty at all now. It used to get greasy all the time.

Exactly! The aerosolized oils all over! So gross and so glad to have that becoming a memory. Well, after I do a “final” degreasing of a couple places. :face_vomiting:

Thanks! Stainless steel is not my favorite finish, but I don’t hate it here! And with the downdraft up it looks verrrry pro and formidable.
