I’m gonna need that url. Haha
When we were first looking for a house together there were 2 Rob really liked not because of the building but the location & proximity to nature trails and such. Both of them were our max $ & needed a lot of work. Leaky basement & the other full gut. I feel 100% justified about saying a hard no to both, even though he still thinks about them, lol. Paint is an easy fix. Living in a months-long construction zone with a bunch of kids is just more of a challenge than I’d ever be up for.
@Whistlefish, it’s Cabin Homes. Happy browsing!
I hear you, @Magpie, this is brutal. I know I’m naturally a bit chaotic, but that’s typically chaos of my own making. This is everyone else’s mess and it’s a neverending assault on the senses. Every day is a struggle to not have a full-on mental breakdown. I wanted to rent a place while we remodeled but was convinced that we could manage. Good for you, putting your foot down.
Oh, girl. It’s almost done, not much longer? A few days of chaos I could handle but weeks on end I would get real grumpy.
Lately I’ve been browsing houseplans. We’ve no plan (or ability) to build a house, but I have always liked looking at them and it’s fun to dream and plot. My dad had a few house plan catalogs when I was a kid and I looked through them over and over.
Sadly, no. The bedrooms are just the first phase. We’re redoing most of the main floor. Three bedrooms (in total), the full bath, half bath, kitchen, dining room, living room, and a handful of closets are getting at least a refresh. Months. All the windows and doors are getting replaced, too
How cool!
Wow, so gorgeous!!
It sounds really stressful, I hope it all goes as smoothly as it can for you. It’s going to be so fabulous when it’s done!
Thanks. Everyone else is coping well, so that’s a comfort. I’m the most neurospicy person in my family, though, and I struggle with any changes to my routine. Flexible, I am not. ![]()

It sounds like you are doing well acknowledging and working towards ways to cope and that’s a big deal! I hope you can hide out in the basement and find some comfort there. Even when house projects are minimally disruptive and there aren’t kids involved, it is hard to have workers in your house while you’re trying to have a normal day. I can only imagine what you’re going through.
Our exterior remodel begins in late March…I am trying to prepare myself for weeks of chaos and additional unplanned expenses…
Oh gosh, that’s a lot to go through on site. (((Hugs))). Use whatever coping mechanisms give you relief! I hope it goes quickly & smoothly and you continue to enjoy the results as they unfold.
I’m still sick at home, flat in bed since Tuesday night. Flu really is awful. Meanwhile, Rob’s been at the other place since last Wednesday, our 2019 truck broke down again (Ford: Found On Road Dead
) so he’s at least avoided my ick, but he’s on the way home today. While there, the junk haulers came & cleared out the crawl space to prep for the sealers. They got it all except for some really big rocks that are for some unknown reason down there. So, either the sealers will need to wrap the rocks when they do the ground
or we’ll have to rent a mini jackhammer & break them up to get them out. Just… weirdness.
Thank you.
I hope you feel better soon! That is a lot to deal with at once on your end, too.
Rocks? Were they on-site when the house was built, maybe? Just too big to move and so built around? Weird.
I have no clue, the building was built in 1892.
The pine sampler:
The giant rocks in the creepy crawl space:
That’s pretty common around here…we have huge boulders in our yard that we just have to work around…I am sure that buildings with crawl spaces were just built over some of the rocks.
I have even seen some used to hold up the structure! That is part of the mystery of old buildings…hope you feel better soon!
When I saw the first picture I thought that looked like a foundation stone, but then I saw it was in the middle of the space. Who knows, they might just have been too much hassle to move in the days before power tools.
You could make some extra cash renting that crawl space out as a set for horror movies… that quaint old shop in that small town where nothing ever happens, but open the hatch of horrors…
There was a rock like that behind the furnace in an unfinished room in my parents’ otherwise finished basement. My mom named it “Skippy” and we freaked friends out when they came to hang out in the basement rec area, saw the padlocked door (to keep my little brothers from getting in there and getting burned) and asked what it was. We always just nonchalantly replied, “oh, that’s Skippy’s room.”
Ahh, the 80s.
Is your foundation made of stone and mortar? If so, it could just be leftover from the original construction.
Way too big. Huge. They gotta go though.
