Home decor and renovation craftalong

Thank you everyone. I walked into the dining room this morning and was awed by the amount of light the new door lets in. Wheee. Trim needed and some wall repairs, rug will be moved over and eventually half the kitchen won’t be in the room.:grinning:

And I assembled the new shoe storage which is 1 5/8 inches too tall. May order new legs or saw these off. I moved the open shoe rack to the hall closet. I did not get a before picture, but just picture a tangled pile of shoes and boots. I know you can.

I like the new shoe storage, it looks fancy! I hope you can find a way to make it fit in that space.

I’ve emptied a large part of my room, and decluttered some stuff. I came across a (completely finished) curtain for our front door, we just still hadn’t ordered the curtain rail for it. So we measured it and ordered from the place we ordered our other rails from, too. Their price was reasonable and the rails are really nice. They were a bit more expensive than at the local hardware store, but the difference wasn’t huge and they look and slide much better. Curtain rails are one of those things that just need to be there and work and hopefully you won’t have to think about them ever again. It should arrive next weekend, perfect timing.

I’m probably keeping my Kallax storage units, as the shape and the bins are very convenient, but I do think I’m going to add a back panel. It’s pushed against the wall, but in a few of the cubbies I have shelves for paper and they keep sliding between the Kallax unit and the wall.

I have a fancy desk from work that can go up and down, that I don’t just use for work but also for cutting fabric. It doesn’t come with drawers so I’m still searching for them. @photojenn I know you have Ikea Alex, they look sturdy enough for what I need them for, but how are the wheels? I used to have a drawer unit on wheels years ago (not Ikea) but I got rid of it because the wheels were so awful. It was a real challenge to move it, and it only had to roll to the other side of the room. One reason why my craft room is always so messy is because my “daily things” are on top of my desk, due to lack of drawers. I have cubbies for stuff like fabric, but I need a place for my pens, sellotape, scissors, notebook etc. The Alex would also give a bit of extra surface when I’m using my desk to cut fabric for a project and need to keep it out of the way while cutting. (LOL I was just thinking, Mr Imma is always saying, why is your room so messy while my desk is empty?!! It’s because you have a wife who keeps sellotape and scissors and sharpies in her room so you can ask for them once a month!)

I’m also on the hunt for a bookcase, I’m looking for a sturdy thrift shop one. I can always paint it if it’s ugly. I’ll probably still have lots of empty floorspace and I’m keeping that empty right now, because in future I think I may want to buy a serger and it would be great to have space for a small second desk for it.

It’s slow to move, mostly because of the weight of the drawers themselves before putting anything in them. I don’t have an issue moving it around, but I wouldn’t want to do it everyday. It’s much harder to move around than one of the carts. The drawer unit itself weighs about 72lbs (33kg).

Wow that’s heavy! I don’t think I will move it every day, maybe once or twice a month. but I hadn’t expected it would weigh that much.

We spent the entire weekend clearing out our bedroom and some closets. I am so sore. But, here are some new ‘before’ photos.

My room:

Hall closet:

Linen closet:

No pictures of the bathroom, as they are currently demolishing it.

I am hiding in the basement and doom scrolling. I should put on a knitting podcast and craft for a bit, though.

How exciting!

I swear we have almost the same ceiling fan/light!

I’m starting to think that home renovation leads to more home renovation. I just had a crazy idea to redo the entire storage section of our dining room  My husband said he’s looking forward to seeing my floor plans :joy:

Yes, your idea is correct…

It sure does. Bedroom, then guest room, then two closets, now the kitchen. It keeps going.

Maybe! Mine is one of the big name brands, I forget which. The glass dome is frosted white, just removed for now.

Mine is also frosted glass and the fan blades can be reversed for rattan or palm leaves. I have palm leaves right now to fit the Japanese theme of my bedroom. Mine is made by Honeywell. I bought it on Amazon to replace a very old one in the house.

Ah, mine is not reversible. The motor is, though, which is nice.

I was just talking to a neighbor yesterday about how a reversible motor on a fan is key if you aren’t living an equatorial lifestyle.

I agree! Circulating air during all seasons is important for a cleaner and healthier life but also helps with cooling and heating costs!

Yes! After the up front costs, they are very cost effective way to increase comfort all through the year.

I have been moving forward, slowly but surely, on my built-in bookcases project over the last couple weeks and today I finally screwed-n-glued some pieces together!

Just the other day I was wondering if you had already started this project! But of course you have, and it looks like you’re doing a really professional job.

Thanks! I am going slow to make sure I am doing things well. I don’t want anyone who ever sees this to assume that the homeowner made it. In order to deal with my trepidation and get going I committed to doing “outside” things at least 2 hours/day, at least 5 days/week if the temp was over 25F. That time includes snow removal, but the snow has been removing itself for awhile now. The first few days of this were getting the shop ready for me to work in it.

I’m sure it will look super impressive and professional when it’s done, and not like a someone just built this on a Saturday afternoon.

I just finished applying primer to the last bit of my room and the landing! I know it’s really necessary but I hate that smelly messy stuff. Tomorrow I will hopefully get the last bits of my room painted in a light pink. Then on Sunday I want to empty out the entire room, and do a last layer on my berry purple accent wall that I painted a couple of months ago - the colour is nice but if you miss a tiny spot it’s very visible.

Then, hopefully soon…the floor! I went floor shopping earlier today. My issue is basically champagne taste on a beer budget. I would love a hardwood floor but I don’t want to pay what it costs. But then I found this in a corner of the store:

It’s just enough for my room, leftovers of engineered hardwood tongue and groove flooring. And it’s €195 for that whole pile. That’s also cheap in USD - a little over $200. I talked to the owner, we’ve DIY’ed laminate floors before and he says installing this is very similar. And for that price, I’m willing to risk it. I said I was going to think about it tonight but I know I’ll go and buy it tomorrow. The owner said no one wants a fancy floor like this in a bedroom or office, so it’s been in the shop for a year.

The price is one major reason why I’m sometimes unsure about DIY’ing things. When I sew something and it ends up being terrible, I’ve wasted maybe €25. But if I had to pay full price for this floor, I would have been terrified of DIY’ing it. At the original price, this floor would have cost almost €1200.

That flooring looks like champagne taste. How fortuitous!
