That’s a win in my book! And also a little terrifying! But great job!
Haha! Thanks!
Haha! You carved the ice cream!
I know with fondant molds, you dust them with cornstarch to help them release, but maybe coconut oil or butter would be better for ice cream? Or a candy shell, as others have suggested. Those candy melts come in lots of different colors, and you could mix different colors to try to replicate roasted-turkey color.
Coconut oil! That might be the answer! The shell could give the look, but also be a challenge to cut.
What about instant pudding rather than jello? The boxes you add milk to rather than water, in caramel and vanilla flavour.
I don’t think those would hold a shape - at least not as I remember the texture. Especially in the “building” phase.
I haven’t tried using two different colours, but I’ve used instant pudding in pudding moulds quite often and it works (I’ve only used traditional porcelain moulds).
Not sure if the instant pudding mixes available for you are quite the same - I have mostly used Dr. Oetker instant pudding. The ingredients might be different there.
I bet the pudding is different! The instant pudding I’ve had - and it’s been at least 20 years - are definitely not sturdy enough to hold a mould that would be much bigger than a chocolate mould, I think.
My grandma on my dad’s side was a terrible cook, her food was very bland. She used to serve instant pudding every day, from a mould on Sundays. I inherited her bunny mould and I sometimes make instant pudding for Easter. I much prefer another relative’s fresh pineapple pudding recipe but that’s a lot of work.
The bunny mould is adorable!
Who knew turkey could make for such a tasty dessert? I really appreciate your added effort of the two tones of ice cream. That carving picture does a great job of capturing the look you were going for!
When you had originally posted about getting this turkey mold I ended up going down a turkey mold rabbit hole and I don’t remember if I ever shared my findings. So, I looked up some stuff again tonight in order to share. First up, I came across this blog post. The writer references her participation in TurkeyFest - an office party competition to create the best edible dish using a Jell-O turkey mold like yours. Next, and best of all, I searched out the TurkeyFest page, which provides dozens of contest entry photos from 2006 to 2015 along with a collection of blog posts that documented this fun and entertaining office party tradition!
Wow! This is one heck of a deep rabbit hole! Who’da thunk? Thanks for sharing!c
The Ben & Jerry’s Law of Thermodynamics (i believe that’s what it’s called. I’d have to double check)
Hot drinks in summer warm your internal temperature so the outside feels cooler
Ice cream in winter lowers your internal temperature so the outside feels warmer.
Also: their original m&m ice cream never had green m&m’s because they taste best and one always picked them out and ate them before the ice cream was made.
I don’t think it actually works that way– the high fat & sugar of ice cream does eventually warm you up, but you have to digest it first, and if I’m already cold, this doesn’t appeal. ![]()
(My uncle has also been known to complain about visiting various places in east Asia where the prevailing theory is that you should drink hot tea to cool you down b/c it makes you sweat, which is really not so helpful if you’re already sweating just fine…)
This is hilariously wonderful. I need to use this for birthday celebrations. ![]()
Thanks! Such a fun and weird project!
