I’ve always wanted to do a wattle fence, but never sourced the materials. My yard just doesn’t have the right stuff.

Our four-legged guest was digging up the garden today, which inspired me to stop ignoring the yard. I ordered a composting bin because Mr. Imma thinks the composting pile is ugly and I’ve not spent enough time working it lately.
Last year we removed a tiny tree that came up spontaneously, I pulled away some weeds and hidden behind it was a new baby tree. We’ve decided to keep it since it apparantly really wants to live here. We’ll see if it lasts. It’s a silver poplar. There are lots of them in a nearby park. I also put up some laundry lines so I’ll spend more time outside from now on.

I have been bringing home all my vegetable plants from the bike shop (kinda like a greenhouse, it’s always warm). I also have potatoes planted and I’ll be planting blue corn this week. In the trailer is a tomato, two chile peppers, and a marigold. So I have 3 chile pepper plants total: poblano, serrano, and New Mexican green chile.

Garden is planted, transplants and seedlings are doing great. The explosion of weeds hasn’t happened yet….Best gardening time ever. The weeds are quite enthusiastic in the flower beds though.
Our fencing and gate are all done and it is keeping the rabbits out so far. Squirrels are not deterred, of course, and they are digging holes looking for hidden treasures. We have not seen the ground hog yet, but I’ve been chasing the moles around, pouring caster oil in their tunnels. Love gardening!

The cold planted things are growing. Tons of spinach, even where I didn’t put any seeds
Peas in 3 out of six places, and some of the spots have more than one plant growing more or less on top of each other.
One broad bean, another sprouted but died.
Some of the tatsoi came up, but we might have too long days for it not to bloom.
Rubarb is coming along nicely.

My very first homegrown chile ever. It’s a Chimayo, which is usually what those southwest chile ristras are made out of. So far I only have one though.
I have also harvested cilantro but nothing else is ready yet.

I’ve ripped up the spinach and most of the tatsoi, but we ate a lot before it went to seed. The sugar snap peas are just about ready to be harvested despite the roe deer happily eating the first sets of flowers (and then some).
I have some broad beans coming along, but there will not be much from one plant 
I planted carrots where the spinach was, and I have tiny seedlings now. One purple bean plant has started growing, and I planted a few more since only oneout of three seeds sprouted. I’m unfamiliar with these, previous beans have been germinating like crazy so I didn’t want to plant too many as the box is small.

All our plants withered and failed except for some scraggily garden beans and maybe some tomato suckers we planted that are not totally wilted (but very nearly). After this heat wave I will attempt a bit of a “come back.” But thank goodness I don’t have to rely on myself to feed us from the land!
Beans, cukes, tomatoes, parsley cilantro, chives, peppers, a sprinkle of lettuce, weed (legal here).
Pic from last week, it’s been alternating high heat & downpours here, things are bigger at this point.

Lol, a fun story about the growing of weed - not legal here, but a few plants for personal use is not a big deal as long as you’re not a renter.
My idiot uncle has a friend who is an even bigger idiot, and he took pictures of the dozens of plants he grew inside his apartment and put them on Facebook. He was genuinly surprised when the police turned up and he was kicked out by the landlord.

Aarggh looks like my neighbour killed our grape 
We have a grapevine growing on our side of our shared fence. You can probably see it in one of my earliest posts.
It’s quite big now and I’m sure there are some grapes growing on the neighbour’s side of the fence. The neighbour doesn’t use his yard at all, literally doesn’t go there for months on end, weeds grow taller than a person. So I figured he wouldn’t care, and he’s free to eat all the delicious grapes that hang on his side of the fence if he wants to.
We were away for the weekend and we came back to a wilted grape. I was surprised because it’s been hot but it looked good before we left. It looks worse today and that’s when we found out the neighbour has spent his whole weekend clearing out his garden, which is great. Except it looks like he cut through so many branches of the grape that grows on the chainlink fence, that basically the whole plant is wilting. I’m picking the grapes tonight I guess. They aren’t completely ripe but it’s this or nothing. I will take a better look tonight to see what he did but it very much looks like the whole plant is wilting. I hope it will grow back next year, I think you can cut off quite a bit of a grape before it truly dies but it will take some time before it’s this big again.
Also, looks like he removed a lot of weeds, and killed my grape, but left the Japanese knotweed

Oh no!
Did he poison it, do you think? I hope not.
Maybe before next year you can add a climbing trellis in front of the fence amd try to redirect what vines you can away from the fence to protect them. I hope the center stalk is salvageable!

I hadn’t even thought of poison! Right now I just think he cut through all the branches. No reason to assume the worst + poison costs money.
