If you wash it and block it, it will straighten out the edges some. But when you “fix” it, then wash it, the fixing might mess it up again. I would fix it then wash and block the entire thing.
To ease your mind…when it is worn, or used, like a blanket, the edges are hardly noticed at all except by you…it is a lovely shawl as is and the border will just make it fit better and show that pattern at the back.
Just need to wash and block it now! The different-length stitches really helped even out the wonky edge! Thanks, all!

I’m not really a shawl person but at a craft fair a few weeks ago I received a freebie pattern, super simple, and I think I’m hooked! I cast on on Wednesday and it’s now a meter long. I used Scheepjes Colour Crafter in a burnt orange-ish colour. I’ve got three balls of grey Colour Crafter in stash and when mine is done I might knit a grey one for my mum. I’ve knit simple 2k 2p shawls in the very distant past but never anythng special. The basic pattern is very simple, just knit, yo near the end of the needle, purl on the back, but that yo creates a nice lace-y edge and a triangular shape, and then every 20 rows there’a a few rows of a very simple yo, k2tog pattern. Why didn’t I discover shawl knitting earlier?
I don’t really wear shawls in a “traditional” way. I just think of them as extra warm and large scarves. They look great over a neutral coat in winter. I like them when I am sitting in the house reading or stitching. They are easier to put on and off than sweaters.

My shawl is done, and I’m going to cast on the other one for my mum. It’s addictive and now I know this pattern by heart I might take advantage of that.
20 years or so ago I bought a cheap knitted poncho from a market stall and I’ve worn that around the house ever since. After 20 years, it’s still in relatively good shape considering it’s age and the amount of times I’ve worn it, but it’s discoloured and full of stains that no longer wash out. This shawl is big enough to wrap around my body and tie at the back so it might be a good replacement for my favourite ugly poncho.
Finished the other one just now, right before bedtime on the Sunday before my PTO is over. I got bored somewhere this summer and set it aside, but I took it with me on my trip last week to knit on the way / in the room at night, and knit a little bit almost every evening for two weeks. Pictures to follow. It will be a Christmas gift for my mum. She will like it, she likes grey, and she gets cold in the evenings so shawls, blankets and socks are always welcome.
Just started a new shawl. It is called the Meditation Shawl because it is really such an easy, mindless pattern. It will be my go-to shawl for when I get bored or stressed out and need to do something easy. The yarn is merino wool by Fiber Expressions. I bought it when she had a buy two, get one free sale.
