CLOSED: Nerd Games - Fall 2020

Hey all, I have made things that I haven’t added here. I’m sorry team Up to Snow Good that I don’t feel like going back and seeing what I can add, but I’ll include one last Zap!

Prompt: Zap!
Team: Up to Snow Good
Project Name: Amazon Gift Box Magnets
Brief Description: My family and I shop from Amazon a lot. I found these cool gift boxes when I ordered gift cards this year, and just knew I needed to have them as magnets! I have heavy weight magnets on the bubble wrap one and light weight magnets on the box (heavy weight is too much!) I haven’t used my gift cards yet, so they are actually in the tin one right now!

I have a few projects that I made over the last week (plus one I forgot about). Then, I’m planning to bust out the sewing machine today to hopefully make a couple of other items.

Prompt: October- Palindrome
Team: Gingerbread Mayhem
Project Name: Scrubbie Dishcloth #1
Project Link: n/a
Brief Description: This uses the simple pattern that geekgirl shared (crochet an odd # of chains, sc in 2nd from hook, dc, then sc, dc until the end… chain one, sc, dc across), and the stitch pattern is the same as you move back and forth across the rows. It also makes the same pattern on both sides. It’s made from a yarn that has a nylon thread wrapped around a cotton (I think) core. This particular brand (Aunt Lydia’s?) is discontinued, I believe, but I think there’s another brand available. I found this on clearance some time ago.

Project Photo(s):

Prompt: October- Simile
Team: Gingerbread Mayhem
Project Name: Scrubbie Dishcloth #2
Project Link: n/a
Brief Description: This one uses the same pattern as the one above, but I used a different number of starting chains (2 more) so it’s more square than the one above. I wasn’t sure I had enough yarn to make the first one, so I made it more narrow. I used the entire ball. Then, I found a second ball, and knew I had enough yarn to make the second one a bit wider (but not as long).

Project Photo(s):

Prompt: November- Fly Agaric
Team: Gingerbread Mayhem
Project Name: Luthuanian Star Ornament (#1)
Project Link: Lithuanian Star Ornaments
Brief Description: In honor of our Lithuanian heritage, we made Lithuanian star ornaments using wheat straws. My first successful one was 6 sided, and I like how the red embroidery floss looks against the straws.

Project Name: Etched Glass Mug

Brief Description: I made this for kittykill in the Winter Book Swap (and somehow forgot to post it!). It says “I like Big Books and I cannot lie.” It’s made of glass (delicate), partially see through where the etching is, and it can be used over and over!

Prompt: Advent - Christmas Tree
Team: Gingerbread Mayhem
Project Name: Scrabble Nerd Games board 1
Project Link:
Brief Description: QueenHobo offered a gift to be claimed this season, but didn’t follow through. I ended up designing a fun Nerd Games trinket for participants that sent me their addresses. In the end, I had 8 people to send to! I did get QueenHobo to help me burn half of them. Here are the four I burned.
Project Photo(s):

Prompt: Zap
Team: Gingerbread Mayhem
Project Name: Scrabble Nerd Games board 2
Project Link:
Brief Description: These are the boards QueenHobo burned. She used my original burning tool, I used my upgraded tool. You can really see the difference in the quality of the burn. I’m glad I splurged on the more expensive tool. She burned the most of the card… I’m claiming this as a zap because I had to burn all of the tiny numbers on each block. My original burn tool can’t handle that fine of a burn.

Love my burned board! Thanks so much!! :slight_smile: And also, wow, look at the range of different crafts you just posted! So versatile! XD

What burning tool did you upgrade to? I have a very basic beginning one.

So the first one I bought was this. This one gets really hot then cools down constantly, so it’s hard to get a consistent burn. The burn tips are also not the greatest. I found the shader to be subpar, the fine tip to not be so fine. My sister used the “fine tip” on the boards she burned, and that’s the best you’ll get.

The second one I bought was this. This one is soooooo much better. It still isn’t perfect, but I’d definitely recommend it over the first one I bought. The ballpoint is my favorite tip on this one. The shader is at a better angle and much easier to use, too. It has a dial to control the heat, and the heat seems to be more consistent while using (though not perfect). I used a 60% off coupon on this to drop the price to $40, so keep an eye out for good coupons!

I think the second model I got is good for the casual burner. The pen is much more ergonomic, it doesn’t burn my fingers to hold closer to the tip, and it heats up and cools down WAY FASTER than the cheap tool. It’s also much easier to change tips. If you want to just burn a few things here and there and not burn all the time, I recommend this one. If you plan on burning a lot of projects, then this may not cut it. One day I may invest in an even more expensive burn set, because I enjoy pyrography so much!

Prompt: Advent- 11/1- Seasonal Changes
Team: Gingerbread Mayhem
Project Name: Double Zipper Pouch (w/tutorial) for Carrying My Masks
Project Link: Double Zipper Pouch w/Tutorial
Brief Description: I wanted to make a double zipper pouch for my masks, since I always seem to forget to bring one! I wanted a compartment for the clean ones, and a separate compartment for the used ones. I figured out a way to make it fully lined in both compartments. I couldn’t find an easy, free tutorial and I didn’t want to buy one because I didn’t want it to be complicated. I had this blue shopping bag from a craft store, and the pouch is also made with several layers.

Project Name: White Christmas ornament
Project Link: N/A
Brief Description: I made a couple of ornaments (that I forgot to photograph :roll_eyes:) for my mom, including a White Christmas themed one. My original idea for that one involved another pop culture reference that I didn’t think would mean anything to her, but I was enamored of it and made it for myself. Long story long, it says “Betty & Judy & Bob & Phil” (names) and hangs on (is attached to) a tree. Here it is in front of my pseudo tree; I may fill it next year to improve readability.

We usually have German spiced red cabbage at Christmas, and somehow we had problems to source that in the shops for a very long time (probably 13+), so this year I decided to make my own. Prompt: December Battle- Gift Box
Team: Raking & Entering
Project Name: Pink house
Project Link: -0-
Brief Description: I made this tiny little house for @gozer. I she likes miniatures but is not such a huge fan of MAKING them! I found this cute kit and since pink is one of her favorite colors, I thought she should have it. I also made all the tiny furniture. I should have put a penny next to it for scale, but the blue one I made for grenouille78 is the same size so I’ve included a scale photo of hers. It is somewhat box shaped and it was wrapped in a box when I sent it to her.
