Nerd Games - Spring 2025

@megwell, I love the Rainbows in Jars! Painting first then stamping over them is such a great idea! And, your affirmations remind of a project that I started at school a few years ago. You have inspired me to finish it, so I hope I still have it!

@Tapestry, your bunny painting is fabulous! Bunnies are so adorable, and make for wonderful subjects (I wish they didn’t eat my plants, though!). Your bee hoopla is so sweet! I haven’t done much needle felting, but the little I have done makes me appreciate this piece even more! And, your paintbrush rests are so clever! I’m forever putting my brush down and having it roll away. I love your Good Day greeting card. I always have trouble incorporating patterned papers into projects, but this is such a nice example of how to do it well. And, your Lantern Keeper painting is magical, and it’s a place I can imagine I would happily sit on a summer evening!

@QueenHobo, your cryptid blanket is phenomenal! I’m still afraid to try this technique, but all of my favorite cryptids are on there, so maybe soon!

@Smeddley, I agree with you about that yarn- dreadful to work with- but you found a good use for it. Even if it doesn’t hold up for very long, I am sure a kitty will be very happy with it in the meantime! And, your basketball coasters would make a great prize for my co-worker’s March Madness event. Perhaps I can remember to make a set for next year! And, while I don’t do any gaming of that sort, I can appreciate how helpful those tags would be, and I love how much detail you added. What could have been just a folded over piece of cardstock was made so much more special! I adore your granny square chickens! I have a pattern for them saved somewhere, and now I want to dig it out.

@gozer, your little monster is so cute! The bright green background makes it happy

@AudiobookLover, your embroidery work on the Spring Butterfly is just lovely! It complements the floral print fabric very nicely, too. And, I didn’t realize you could use a laser on fabric like that. The whole trio of projects has opened my eyes to what could be done on with a laser machine (we have one at school that I have access to). Your machine embroidered butterflies are stunning, too!

@storerboughtcreation, your braided wheat blankets are gorgeous! I recently bought a pattern using this stitch but haven’t tried it yet. Is it easy to work? Is it worked horizontally to create the vertical rows (that would be a lot of color changing on the striped version otherwise!)?

The pins are especially fabulous this season! I have planned out a list of projects that could help me earn them all. Hopefully at least one will be finished this week, if not more. I have some relatively calm weeks ahead, so I should be able to squeeze in some more craft time!

It’s a super easy pattern. I think the stripes are meant to be vertical as I’ve done them, but you could have them be horizontal if you wanted. Just work to the length you want (or width) and follow the pattern. All of your color changes will be on the same end if you choose to change colors, and weaving in isn’t too bad (as long as you don’t cut a braid like I did. Oops!).

When you start yours, I’m more than happy to answer any questions if you have any. Just send me a message. I have become obsessed with this simple pattern. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Thanks! And, I thought I bought a scarf pattern, but I just looked in my Ravelry library and I actually bought the blanket pattern! Hooray! It looks easy enough, but I’ll definitely reach out with questions. What size blankets did you make? I think I still have some yarn for a blanket I started but never finished that would be perfect for this.

Mine are all baby blanket sized. The ones made with worsted weight I used an I hook and chained either 150 or 160 plus one for the turning chain.

For a sport weight yarn, I used an H hook and chained 170 or 180 plus one for the turning chain. I did 8 rows sc BLO at the beginning and the very end for the border, and the first and last 8 stitches of each row for the border as I worked the wheat strips.

We’ve been in a frenzy of renovations here (more like demolition/destruction, actually), so I’m just now getting caught up on everyone’s great projects… Please excuse any typos. It’s pretty late, but I really just wanted to come here and see everyone’s cool stuff

@megwell I love your little rainbow jars! I hadn’t heard of dry brushing before, so I learned something new today.

I love the idea of leaving affirmations for people to find; it’s such a kind thought and will brighten someone’s day .

@Tapestry, what a gorgeous bunny! The fur is so detailed! And the splatters on the background are lovely

That felted bee is so sweet. The patience required for this type of art always amazes me.

The paintbrush rests are such a great idea! And they’re also really cute

I love the 3D aspect of the “Have a great day” on your card.

The gouache painting is beautiful. I love the colours, and the lights really do give the feeling that they’re lit up!

@QueenHobo Cool blanket! The colour combinations really make the motifs pop!

I’m also always lured into the games by the cute stabby things lol

Also…I related to children’s sports exhaustion…though we’re having a break as cheereleading season is over for prep teams. Not for long though… practices start again next month.

And… sunflowers!!! That bag is so amazing! It does look like it took a lot of work! I lov ethe varying colours of the flowers.

That unicorn mask is so cute!

The sunflower hair accessory looks great on all the models! I think it would be really cool as a finishing touch on a bun.

@Smeddley The yarn sounds very difficult to work with, but the resulting product looks so cozy! I bet the kitties will love it.

What a cool idea for the coasters!

I’m always amazed by the creativity that goes into RPG games… I’ve never gotten a chance to truly participate in one, but some day I hope to find a low stakes beginner’s group somewhere. I think the GM will appreciate the organization

@gozer What a cute little monster! It really pops against hte green background, too.

@AudiobookLover I love that butterfly! And it’s so cool that yo used two different techniques o create it!

The bookmark is lovely, too, and I am just really enjoying the butterfly theme in all of your projects. One of my very good friends is obsessed with butterflies, so seeing them reminds me of her, which always brings me joy

@storerboughtcreation your blankets look so cozy! I really like the one with alternating colours.

@Bunny1kenobi Wow; that mini shadow box is so detailed! I love the little house, the moon, just everything about it

Prompt: Big Time
Team: Bits and Bobs
Project Name: Sublimation fanny packs
Project Link:
Brief Description: I got a request to make some custom fanny packs. Including the one test print, I made 16 in total, with 15 finished usable products. These were a tricky because of creases (it was two layers of fabric and they were not perfectly taut), seams, and the subtle depth changes due to the Velcro closures. They couldn’t get perfectly flat, and even with the usual tricks to deal with that, it was way more of a pain that I expected. What I planned to take maybe about an hour or so took seven. :grimacing: They turned out pretty good in the end, though!

Project Name: “Cookie Monster” Yarn Hat
Project Link: “Cookie Monster” Yarn Hat

Brief Description: I found this ball of Sesame Street One Hat Wonder yarn in the bags of yarn donated to my crochet club at school. It’s the Cookie Monster colorway, and it reminded me of the sky on a cloudy day, as a rainstorm is approaching. The white pom pom is like a little fluffy cloud, too! I worked on this during our state testing, since we need to walk around and monitor students and this was an easy pattern. I modified it slightly to add the band at the brim, because it came out a little shorter than the pattern said it would.

Prompt: April- Red Poppy
Team: Bits and Bobs
Project Name: Crocheted Pop Mushroom
Project Link: N/A

Brief Description: One of my crochet club students wanted to make a mushroom, but didn’t like the pattern that I had. Her mom found a pattern on Pinterest (although I couldn’t find it to share here) and I taught my student how to make it. It took longer to make because of this, and I feel like it didn’t come out exactly correct, but mine is cute nonetheless, and she was happy with her version. And, it’s red!
