Ongoing ATC Abecedarium: D, P, W, B

I got the notion to create an ATC Abecedarium a little over a year ago. I bought paper and cut out 26+ cards then and have been ruminating and making notes since then. Yesterday, I had the time and inclination to get started. I started with the letter D.

D.

I don’t totally love the look, but I do love how I did the “D” of it all.

It says: A diving dragonfly dropping dice on a doe deer drinking a dotted daquiri adjacent a diamond-plate daisy, all on a diagonal-striped, daffodil-yellow background.

I know realize I should have said "… displayed on a… " but oh, well! I also misspelled daquiri. D’oh! I’ll see about fixing that somehow.

I do not plan to do them in any kind of order nor do I plan to trade them.

And I have already gotten the chance to make another while waiting for a thunderstorm to pass.

P.

I am more pleased with the look of this one! I also like the P of it all.

It says: The pine-impressed, plaid postage stamp promotes the Purple Penquin Prize to the pink polka-dot package. Price: 1 puce penny.

The plaid is embossed with pinecones/boughs, but I couldn’t really get the camera to catch it. They just look like color inconsistencies in the photo.

W.

I had a lot of fun getting the W of it all going on this one.

It says:
Below a winter sky, the White Whale of the Woodgrain Waters quaffs white wine while swimming among the wreath-weeds-with-Wisconsin.

The wine glass is acetate and difficult to capture the stem with my phone camera. The Wisconsin is from a map of the US die and I tried to make it look like the cheese head hats that the Green Bay Packers fans wear.

B.

Boy, oh boy, did I have fun with B. This one morphed and shifted more along the way than the others. Orignally the bird was going to be black or blue, the basket was going to have blue balls (stop), and the branch was just a branch. I spotted the little buckles in my stash of pre-cut things yesterday and had an ah-ha moment with them today.

It says:
A buff-colored bird wearing a black bowtie & brown buckles brings beige bones to the blueberry branch on which is balanced a bronze basket of blue buttons & a bottle of burgundy behind a blue brick wall.

I am particularly tickled with how the bronze basket of blue buttons and the bottle of burgundy turned out. The ankle buckles are so ridiculous that they crack me up a little.

This sounds like a great project! You’re off to a fun start.
I think it’s smart to work on the cards as inspiration strikes, rather than trying to find the inspiration for each letter as it comes up in alphabetical order.

Thank you! I couldn’t think of a reason to go in order other than “that’s how it’s done” which isn’t often a good reason in and of itself.

Such an interesting idea and execution! Brainstorming each will be so fun.

You are having fun! These are great and will make a fun set. I can’t wait to see B (Bigfoot).

Thank you! Maybe B (Bigfoot) or maybe S (sasquatch)!

Or maybe both?

We’ll just have to wait and see! Or not see… it is Bigfoot, after all.

Today I had the time and inclination to do W! All the pics are in the OP.

Another fun addition! I like the addition of the wood grain waters and that cheese just makes me chuckle.

Thanks so much! I tried so hard to make that Wisconsin-shaped cheese fit in - both aesthetically and verbally and just couldn’t get there, so standing out it is!

Today I got to work on B!

And early in the week, I went ahead and completed adding the letters to the backs of the cards I’d precut last year. The letters are cut from the scraps from the card cutting.

The scraps with the letters cut out looked too cool not to photograph, too!

I really am enjoying watching this project come together! It’s such a fun idea and I love the ‘bited size’ nature of it. It seems perfect for times when you have a bit of time to craft, but don’t want to commit to something too time consuming (though I realize that it probably takes a good amount of time to get each element prepped and ready for the final card). It also seems like the type of project that can keep your mind busy coming up with new ideas, even when you aren’t actively working on it.
I enjoy reading your explanations and discovering things I didn’t notice on my first look through (ie. blue buttons in the basket). I’m glad you still have most of the alphabet to go through, because that means there’s still a ton to come and I’m looking forward to seeing it all!

Thank you so, so much! This is all so kind of you to say. And you’re correct that it does keep my mind busy at other times: I have a running list on my phone for when “initial inspiration” strikes. It has been super fun to fill in the “down time” I found myself with because of materials supply issues this week with the big DIY project I am working on.

This projects tics a lot of things: creative, brain storming, fun, colorful, and lovely!

I love the backs with your narrative…what a great way to keep the brain working!

The W is my favorite so far, but I am sure there will be others to take its place.
