I don’t really know where to put this…. I was looking for an AI category but ended up using misc.
I am uncomfortable with AI for many many reasons. That is a long, multifaceted discussion.
But I wanted to see what it could do. I started with ChatpGPT for no reason other than it was there and seemed to be big enough and around long enough that the bugs and viruses and back doors have to have been buried or corrected. So…
I fed it a picture of one of my very shy monsters who live under the bed and asked it to turn it into anime style. I then asked it to make the monster peak out from underneath a quilt. After a very few iterations, (the free limit is really small) I ended up with this. I kind of like how it looks. I might use it to make some stickers. I might play around with some of my other characters. I can see why it has a lot of appeal. I am still uncomfortable. And I will always clearly label these things as AI generated from photos I personally took of objects I personally made. But….
Another one… This is Cosplay Kitty in his astronaut suit.

As a quilter, I am a bit disappointed that AI came up with what I think of as a puffy duvet, not a quilt. You would think with all of the patterns and pictures of quilts that it could have come up with something more intricate.
I do think, however, that the choice is a good one for this anime type character.
I use AI mostly for self-improvement and not for sharing, but I can also see the appeal and don’t think there is anything wrong with using it as a jumping off point.
You still have to approve it, change it, and make it your own. I think it is a really cute little guy!
I’m not a fan of calling AI generated images art. That said, you fed a piece of your own art to start? I think that’s different then generating from text.
The monster looks cute. What did it look like originally?
Like I said, I have lots of reasons to dislike AI. An acquaintance started an shop that was clearly ai generated images drop shipped from a print on demand. Wanted me to support their art. I get it that the prompt is everything. If you don’t start with a vision you can’t get to anything unique. But ai harvests art and uses it to build. That makes me incredibly uncomfortable.
I did start with a photo of one of my plushies. I dunno. I like finished image because it brings the plushie to life in a way that I see in my head but don’t have the skills to put on paper. I am wondering if I can use it to illustrate my next book. I just don’t know. I might try starting with one of my sketches next.
There is a lot of hate for AI generated art. I don’t think what you’re talking about is the same. You gave the computer a model and it used that to make the art. Your friend’s business…is bound to get a lot of hate.
