Final block done!
Wheeeeee
That block is very nice indeed.
It’s be so nice when it’s complete
This is a very happy block!
I cut this scrap project I think in fall 2022. Today I found the blocks and decided to finish it.
The blocks are 8x8" and I haven’t found any suitable fabric for sashing / borders yet. Which design do you guys prefer?
It’s a very foggy winter’s day so the colours are all off. What kind of colour do you guys prefer for the sashing / border? I’ve been looking at my grey fabrics but they all look a bit meh.
I like the first one. The blocks are all quite busy so keeping them in the center and then putting them with a border will calm them down I think. A border of either the blue or green would be nice with maybe grey for the binding.
Thanks! will be using it as a lap quilt I guess (it has no purpose yet) so maybe rectangular is also a more practical shape.
I like the first layout best, too. I don’t know that it needs sashing, but I agree with AIMR. Green or blue, and I’m leaning more towards blue. I feel green would make it more bright/cheerful. Blue more restful/calming.
I’ll go for the first layout! That was my original idea, but when I was laying out the squares I was suddenly seeing all these different options.
I’m not going to go for sashing, but I will add a blue border. I was saving that blue fabric for the backing, but it’s the only colour in my stash that I feel matches these fabrics. I’ve got a (completely) different fabric in stash that I think will also work for the backing. This is a stash project, so I really want to use what I have and not buy extra supplies.
I like the first layout too.
By the way, the block is called Treasure Box and comes from the book Quilts for Scrap Lovers by Judy Gauthier. All patterns are based on 3,5", 4,5" and 5,5" squares and the author shares a lot of tips about colour, value, balance, incorporating fabrics you don’t really like etc.
Ok, blocks are all done, and I measured the fabric I have left. I do NOT have enough of the black to do 2.5" strips of sashing, with blue cornerstones. (I have 17", plus most of a 5" wide strip.) I do have enough to cut 2" strips which would come to 1.5" when sewn into the top. I checked Joann’s website, and they don’t show any more, either in my local store, or online to order. I could check there in person to be sure, but I’m pretty sure it was clearance when I bought it.
I do have 3 yards of the electric blue. Which I was going to use to bind, and possibly back the quilt. But it could be sashing if needed.
I finished another top! This was a long-term UFO. It’s all from the scrappiest scraps - cutoffs from the backing of other quilts. This was all cut from 3 to 4" wide strips, except for the border, which was some leftover yardage from previous projects.
Love the blue border. You must gravitate to these colors to have everything in stash!
It will be a nice lap quilt!
Love the border choice! It really sets off the blocks.
Thanks! It’s starting to grow on me, at first it was just a project to get rid of scraps I didn’t particularly like. The border is quite wide, 5", so the finished quilt will be a decent lap size.
That border fabric is perfect! It really works well, I think that finished project is going to look great!
Has anyone used Hobb’s heirloom wool batting? Is it worth the price tag? I typically use Hobbs 80/20, but it’s not super warm. In the past I’ve also worked with bamboo / cotton batting, but that didn’t seem much warmer than Hobbs 80/20 and I haven’t been able to find it right now.
Way back when before I figured out where to get decent batting I used some horrible poly batting from the sewing shop, and that was much warmer than Hobbs 80/20, but also really difficult to sew through. I’ve also used cheap fleece blankets as batting, but they often have strong colours / prints so you can only use them for dark fabrics, and fleece is not great to work with either. The quilt on our bed has a fleece batting, now that it’s done it’s very warm and convenient but the weekend I finished that one was no fun.
We’ve been down with the flu over here and it’s been awful! Thankfully, my husband appears to have avoided it. Fingers crossed that it stays that way!
Yes, you can post prior to a prompt being called, you just can’t mark it until after it is called. Sooo, if members nominate a BOM or two, then as soon as that prompt is called they can mark it off on their Bingo card.
@marionberries, that was a decent amount of work to make that quilt block usable, I’m impressed with your perseverance!
@MistressJennie, I love your star in a star block. It’s so bright and vibrant and I really like how the sun is framed in the star. I like the bright blue cornerstones! I personally think that 1.5" black sashing would work well with the blue as the binding.
@Immaculata, your border fabric goes perfectly with that quilt! I know @tendstowardschaos used wool batting in her Star Wars quilt. Maybe she will have some insight on it.
