Quiltalong - 2025

I’m in VA, and it usually isn’t bad in October. If we get any snow, it will most likely happen in January. Watch me jynx us by saying that. :worried:

@AudiobookLover you are sweet to remember all that.

@MistressJennie good to hear that your hand is making some progress.

As for me, it’s been quite the autumn, between losing my brother, first solo art exhibition, DH retiring, my normal job, plus the degree in art that I’m on year 5/6 and initial work on my PhD. And add to that insanity, I committed to a second exhibition in the cafe from mid November-i have 12/19 paintings done. Almost no stitching and definitely haven’t gotten anywhere near my long armer. I need to get the rest of the paintings done to free up my brain.

Like @AIMR I’ve become very good at ignoring the wanderers wife blocks. And I’m not sure why I’m so stuck with them, I’ve only a few done but want to get at least a couple more done soon. I don’t have a lot of headspace at the moment, so that’s likely it.

@AudiobookLover you made me think, and so I decided to sew something, rather than watch depressing TV.

I finished three (small!) wanderers wife blocks. Which makes a grand total of 5, 5! Blocks I have done.

This completes one of my fourth quarter goals. (Which admittedly was a small one)

And I quilted past my bedtime. And a bingo prompt. Bedtime here xxx

I’m honestly surprised we haven’t had any yet, but the weather people claim we’ll get some in a couple weeks. Usually October snow melts pretty fast, but in November it starts sticking and piling up until it finally melts in April.

I did at least clean off my crafting table, so it’ll be easier to start working on things when I’m finally ready.

I, AIMR, submit the Lone Star block as the QBOM for October (on time!). It is also one of my personal goals for the 4th quarter. I am also quilting way past my bedtime, especially since I have a PT session tomorrow at 9 am! Yikes!

I have to say that the block went a lot faster and easier because I didn’t have to draw any diagonal lines. I am using quarter inch tape on my machine which makes doing diagonals so easy! You just line up the points on the redline and sew!

I took the cut off points from this block and past blocks and ironed them onto some fusible batting to make a small quilted pouch. This took a few hours, so I guess it is a medium project.

Love the blues! That trick with the tape is fantastic. I will have to try it one day when I get fancy with diagonals. LOL! I’m still a straight line, square, quilter.

Beautiful blue block! And so sharp looking.

I use the quarter inch tape to and love it. I still draw diagonal lines. Just habit.

Yesterday’s Quiltalong bingo prompt is:
Spend at least two hours working on a quilt project

These do not have to be consecutive hours, just a total of 2 hours.

I am motivated to make the BOM I missed so I can finish this blue and white sampler quilt!

That is soooo pretty. Reminds me of a china cup.

@AIMR The blue and white are delicious.

I haven’t been participating in the quiltalong, but I finally finished this starry quilt top. It’s been languishing for months. A bedroom remodel, a kitchen remodel, summer, fall…it was stopping me from starting another quilt project.

Completely made from stash. I had fun completing some of last year’s BOMs and testing out new star blocks. I made little stars to fill in, and there are a couple of blocks from a swap.

I see some of you are doing the Wander’s Wife quilt. This is similar in that blocks are different sizes and spacings. But this one had no pattern. Adding sashing to make everything fit was a real mind-bender and required a fair amount of ripping and starting over. It is currently 48 x 60 inches…not sure how that came out so exact! Now to find stash to finish it off.

And a January 2025 shot of it on the wall. I made the first blocks in April of 2024.

I plan something similar with this and any other sampler blocks.

While I like the look of the Wander’s Wife Quilt, there are some odd measurements and if you are not pretty precise in your piecing, things don’t fit together as well. You really have to sort out and measure long strips to fill in the gaps etc. That is why I am thinking of just taking all the blocks and making my own design with them. I can make it a bit simpler with sashing and my own layout. Otherwise, I fear it will always remain in my WIP pile instead of being something finished and useful.

Thank you for sharing…it is a lovely quilt in a style that I love!

Whenever I get to putting together sections, I suspect I will be doing a lot of extra strips to make it fit!.

I love that blue sampler

And @marionberries that is gorgeous!!!

Talk to me about bloc loc rulers. They are very costly. €35 for a 3.5” ruler. And I understand that you need different sizes for every HST you want to make. Are they worth it?

I have so many rulers that I just don’t use because I don’t use them enough to remember how to use them naturally.

Edel, they are MAGICAL! They work so well. I absolutely hate how expensive they are, but after trying one when I needed to square up over 100 HST’s, I will never go back to the old way. They save me so much time, so much frustration, that to me, they are worth every penny.

You can find files for 3-d printer versions to make free ones, but they aren’t quite as thick as the purchased ones. I think I shared the link last year….

Maybe take the plunge on a bloc-lox in a common size you would use often to try it out. Or maybe ask your quilting group if anyone has one you can test drive before buying?

Linda, your BOM sampler is coming out so beautifully. Well done. I can’t wait to see it finished.

And @marionberries, your sampler is looking great too! I’m so glad the blocks I sent fit in so nicely.

Thanks! It has been fun trying to use up stash as well. I hope I don’t have to buy anything else except the backing to finish it!

I am going to put one on my list. I looked at patterns I have not done and I have avoided them because of flying geese and HSTs. Sounds like it would be worth learning even now!

The nice thing about bloc-loc rulers is that they will work with blocks up to the size of the ruler. I have a 6.5” ruler and I can use it on all size HSTs up to 6.5”. I also love mine, it just makes squaring up HSTs quick and easy.

Thank you @MistressJennie I could not remember who had sent them. They fit right in!

It’s on my list to try 3d printing at college, they only have a somewhat translucent filament. I’m wondering how an opaque one would work.

What sizes do you have?

@AudiobookLover so you use the one for all sizes? Because if I do splurge, the next issue would be trying to figure out which size.
