Over the week I’ve quilted sections of the Wonder Woman quilt. Since it’s such a simple strip pattern, I decided to do different types of stitching in each strip. I did little loops in the yellow, sketchy stars in the solid blue, lasso loops around Diana in the white, stippling in the red, and straight lines in the comic book strips.
Here’s what it looks like on the back.

What fun quilting @MistressJennie . It adds so much power to the Wonder Woman theme. She can do anything!
And I finished another FPP bird. I think this Barred Owl and the Pileated Woodpecker will be the center pieces with the others around. I’m not finished with birds, but I am finished with FPP for now.

On a scale from 1 to “are you a masochist,” how crazy would it be if I’m a complete quilting newb and I want to use some super soft minky-style fabric as the backing on a lap quilt for my mom?

.Actually, it will probably depend on how much quilting and how big your quilt is. Minky is slippery and bunches up a lot, but if you are careful and pin a lot it isn’t that bad. I would suggest doing a test run with maybe a small piece of minky and fabric just to get the feel of it. It has been a while since I used minky but it is still a nice soft choice for many quilters.

Spray basting could be real helpful there. Baste to a batting that is pretty sturdy. I have used a non-stretchy blanket from the thrift store for that and it always works out fine. A light fleece blanket is a great batting for a baby blanket because it washes well and dries quickly. Same for a lapghan that may see snacks or pet snuggles.

I’ll try doing a tiny test blankie and see how it goes. The lap blanket should be 35"x35" when done.

I would also recommend watching some videos on tips for working with Minky on YouTube. You’ll get hints on changing tension, stitch length, stitch selection, needle type, etc.
I’ve only used Minky twice, and watching videos helped me a lot, because I’m so used to working with woven fabric, rather than stretch.

Hmm, I’ve been thinking about this while getting dressed and doing morning chores. I know I should be encouraging you in your pursuit, but I have an alternative suggestion… Since this is your first quilt, what about using flannel, instead of minky? Flannel is soft, warm, easily washable, and it’s a woven fabric, that will behave just like the quilting cottons. No fighting trying to make wovens and stretches play nicely.

A tied quilt with minky backing might be better. My DIL sent me a baby quilt with Minky backing to quilt. I ended up sending it out for quilting because my little home mqchine just couldn’t handle it. And it was baby size.
I picked a large quilt pattern and was still surprised on how much it reduced the soft minky feel of the backing.
But hand tieing it would keep the soft minky feel better, I think.

Thanks, @MistressJennie and @marionberries! Felt as an alternative is a great suggestion. I have some that could work. I’ve not heard of hand tieing a quilt so I’ll have to look that up!
Whichever way I go, I’ll share the adventure here and I’m so grateful for the advice! I feel like several sample mini quilts are in my future. I’m a programmer and we often create Proof-of-Concept sites or apps, so a POC for the lap quilt makes total sense 
.

My friend just passed away.
After I left the hospital I spoke with another friend who pointed out that - even if I never got her fabric quilt made - my quilt for her was my love and all the shared memories and experiences. Those are better than a physical quilt. And if, later, I decide to get the quilt made anyways… keep it for myself as a reminder of her love for me.
