Postcards were 24 cents in 2006. Did he come to the USA or have a reason to get them that year? How cool are they!
He travelled to the US many times over his lifetime, for vacation and stamp shows. The amount of things we are finding in his collection that make us go ‘huh’ is amusing.
Our dads had that in common. My dad traveled a lot and collected stamps and coins. I am still going through my family stuff, but mostly papers.
I found out my dad was in Iwa-Jima during WWII as a Marine! He was only 16! He got shot in the leg and was sent back home where they found out he was underage and made him finish high school. He then joined the Army at 17. I wish I had known this when he was alive but he never talked about it.
You are an angel xxxx
It’s been claimed, thank you!
I have a copy of The Jolly Postman or Other People’s Letters in a smaller size that is not in good shape. Some of the inner envelopes are torn and some are missing their contents. Would anyone want to use it for anything? It’s quite cute, even if it is damaged.
I got a letter from my sister yesterday that as missing the contents (and had an apology from the post office) - It is possible she forgot to put in the contents.
Looks like a cute book!
ETA, nevermind, I found some.
Does anyone have colored canvas scraps they don’t need? I’m working on a cover for one of those 8’ pop-up tent frames, and it needs colored dags around the edges. Anything I can cut a 4-6” triangle out of would be fabulous– definitely going for a multicolor look if possible.
(the main fabric is a dark blue boat canvas)
Canvas, like painter canvas floor cloth? or canvas cloth? Is it similar to duck cloth or do you need outdoor/indoor canvas? Not sure what you are looking for…or what you need it for? Tags?
dags like the squiggly edges on a fancy medieval tunic– possibly “bunting” would be a better descriptor to use here.
The canvas I have is boat canvas– standard duck style, but waterproofed, but I could probably use anything from sunbrella fabric to duck. Hang on, I draw a picture….
All I have is regular duck cloth…if any of these interest you, let me know. Happy to ship some off to you!
Some of those are fun!
…but I find that actually I asked too soon, as I found another box in the attic with the spare duffel bag & tent-fixing scraps from my grandmother’s stash. ![]()
Great! And, I am going to use one of the larger pieces to make a new sewing machine cover! That blue batik was something I forgot I even had and will work great.
Awesome; everybody wins! ![]()
Random request: does anyone have any wet-strength tissue paper you’d be willing to share? I only need a single small sheet, 5x7 or larger.
I realllllllly want to play with it for some collage work but the smallest pack I can get on amazon is either 100 sheets or a roll
.
Yep!! Do you mind if it’s large sheets that are folded? They will be at least 5x7 bits unfolded.
Thank you! I don’t mind if it’s folded. Is there anything you could use that I can share?
Printed tissue paper generally holds up - I decoupaged so many things with printed tissue. It’s porous enough that you can place it dry and then use your medium on it to glue it into place.
We did paper tissue collages in school. I used the design from one I made for a rug I wove. We still have the rug which mostly exists in a state of “where in the heck can we put this darn thing?”.
My mom had it hung as a tapestry for many years.
That rug sounds amazing and what a fun creative way to feature work you enjoyed! I have used regular tissue paper a few times so it’ll be interesting to see how the two differ.
Not so amazing. It isn’t overly large and it was woven back when rya rugs were greatly favored (1960s). All the wool used is the same thickness so it lacks some of the interest that is possible from using a variety of textures and subtle mixes of colors, plus the pile is something like 2+ inches which makes it “difficult”. ![]()
My parents commissioned some rya rugs from the art students which were gorgeous (and also “difficult”).
I keep it mostly because it is something I made, but it’s always been awkward - never really having a “place”.
