THE 100 ROOM HOUSE
What do you think about this?
The aim is to make and collect 100 pieces of art that represent rooms in a house and are all connected. This could be in any format. I might suggest ATC’s or postcards .. something that can be kept in a book with protected sleeves that can be flipped through.
Each room has a number. The aim is to have 100 rooms, numbered 0-99. On the back of the art , along with the artist’s signature, the room number should be marked largely and clearly. Every door in every room is marked with the number of the room it leads to. This way, if they are displayed in order, people can walk through your house by flipping through your book to find where each door leads.
To this effect, the art for a room needs to depict at least one door in it, more if it isn’t a dead end. It’s important to stress that each door in the picture is somehow marked with the number of the room it leads to or is entered from.
You can start by making the outside of your front door. This is room 0. Is it a garden path leading to the door? is it a front porch? Is it a highly detailed door taking up most of the art space? This is your choice, and set’s the theme for your house. The front door should have a number on it that corresponds to the room it leads to - this is any number 1-99 (but not 0, because a door should never be labelled with the number of the room it’s in).
TRADING:
For trades, you could specify what you need.
Maybe a short form simple request could look like this?
100 Room House Trade! Theme: Haunted Victorian
-I need room 52 with door 4 and 78 in it.
Or, if you wanted to make a request that is more of a surprise for you, you could say:
100 Room House Trade! Theme: Princess Castle
-I need room 52 with door 4 and these are the rooms that I don’t have yet in case you want to add more doors to room 52: 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 11, 13, 14, 18, 19, 21, 22, 25, 29, 30, 33, 36, 37, 41, 42, 45, 54, 56, 58, 60, 62, 64, 71, 74, 77, 79, 83, 84, 87, 88, 89, 91, 92, 95, 98
And then the trader would think, ok , I see that they’ve listed room-door 4-52, and I also see that they don’t yet have room 78. So I will make room 52, and put a door marked 4 in it, and a door marked 78 in it.
IDEAS:
-paint or draw a room scene as one would see it if you walked in. Clearly mark the doors with numbers available in the house.
-start with a room you find in a magazine and mount this on an ATC. Glue, draw, or paint extra things in it - make it different. Clearly mark the doors with numbers available in the house.
-draw a top down map of a room, 2D, or simulated 3D, including interesting furniture, rugs, and features. Clearly mark the doors/exits with numbers available in the house.
-Surprise someone with a closet instead of a room, filling it with interesting items. In this case, you might picture the closet including the door open so that you can put a number on the door leading back to the room where it started… or … if you are only depicting the contents, you’ll want to somewhere work in a note that says “return to” followed by the number of the room where the closet was opened. A linen closet? A pantry? A wardrobe? Tool storage?
-Make a pixel art style room using your favourite digital art program and print this out. Clearly mark the doors with numbers available in the house.
-Make a 3D pop up room, clearly marking the doors with room numbers.
-Make a fold out , so that the room becomes twice the size … wider, or with a higher ceiling. As always, mark doors clearly with the room(s) it leads to.
Thoughts? A little complex perhaps, but seems like an exciting idea to me. I’d love to have a 100 Room House!
