Your books look so professional! Is it hard to learn?
I used up a bobbin of thread! Mid-project unfortunately, so I’ll have to buy a more. It is green-ish so it counts though ![]()
This week I went through some fabric stashes for a wild hare idea I came up with for upcoming Halloween decorating. Since this year’s “Big Project” was less intense than last year’s and finished at the end of July, I really want to do it up for Halloween. I have another Halloween project coalescing in my mind that I have been plotting and scheming for over the last few years - which included accumulating materials. Ahem.
Well, I know I’m already creeped out.
Bahahahahaaaaaa! Or should I say, Mwahahahaaaaaa!
There’s definitely a learning curve but it probably isn’t worse than most crafts/hobbies. There are plenty of tutorials online, but it’s one of those things where it would also be good to take an in-person class. I worked in book repair as a student (when woolly mammoths roamed the earth) so that definitely gave me a leg up.

Cutting up some scraps for burp cloths. I like to make these because they’re practical for everyone, I was already going to make them from these scraps “someday” but then I decided this weekend should be the day.
That’s a great idea. Do you have a particular type of fabric you like for this? I’ve never had children, so I don’t know if there is a preferred one.
My niece said that the burp cloths I made for her were the most practical gift! She could use them for everything from wiping spills off baby’s face to a bib. I made some fancy ones with quilter’s cotton backed with flannel and then a bunch of plain rectangles. Anything absorbent will work and they are not too precious that they can’t be thrown away after they get too stained or holey.
Yeah, natural fibers are nice, as are things that start out soft, but pretty much the only constraints are “soaks up liquid” & “can toss in the washing machine.”
These are cotton muslin, they’re scraps from a wide tiered skirt I made for myself earlier this summer. They’re curry powder yellow, which is a coincidence, but it might be the perfect colour for burp cloths since the stains won’t be as visible. I’ve also made cotton and flannel ones in the past. A burp cloth is not really that different from a napkin or a small towel. And almost the same thing as udder towels from the feed store which is what we used in my family (dairy farmers)
They’re a good use for sewing scraps and people with children always need them.
Thanks for the info @Immaculata @AIMR @thanate. I’ll have to check out my fabric stash to see what I have.

Our Daily Challenge: Purple by Sue Thompson, on Flickr
Color: Purple
For: Travel/Transportation
Pattern: Floral
Supplies: Paper & Pre-Cuts
Challenge 1: Make two of the same thing
Challenge 2: Is there a supply you can’t figure out how to store? Solve the problem by using it up!
Purple!!
Agree with @AIMR. Yay purple!
August green projects all washed and ready for the donation bags.
Scrubby washcloths:
Quantity - 11 scrubbies; 376 grams/ 458.2 yards used.
Regular washcloths:
Quantity - 17 ; 434 grams of yarn used. I don’t have yardage for this because some of it was unlabeled.
Hat:
Slacked and only made 1 this month. 77 grams of yarn used. I’m definitely behind in my goal for 50 hats this year, so I’ll have to jam some out in the remaining months.
You are flying through your yarn stash!
I am behind on my hats as well…I posted all that I did so far in the hat along to keep me accountable!
I am going to dig up some yarn and start a few to have on hand when I am watching tv. Hmmm…wonder if I have purple in my stash for this month’s theme?
I definitely have purple. I think I have every color in the rainbow ATM. Both my MIL and my best friend unloaded yarn on me this year that they no longer wanted.
I’ve had quilting fabric in my stash for a while, some matching precuts and yardage. I hadn’t decided on a pattern but I came across the perfect pattern a few weeks ago. The main colour is purple, and I’d already decided I wanted to get started this month! So thanks for the challenge, I’ll try to get it finished in time.
