A Monster Watercolor

I created this goofy monster 4x6 art piece for the recent Monster Swap. I started with a doddle and then built the scene around him. I really love how he came out!

Here’s my initial sketch before painting.

Tee-hee-hee. I can hear him giggle. His friend monsters make fun of him.

Poor little monster! I think he’s too fierce for them to tease.

I love this little monster!

Thanks! He’s a doodle monster so you never know quite what you’ll get starting out and discovering is half the fun.

A doodle monster…. I may have to try that!

This piece is absolutely amazing. I love the atmosphere you created for this little monster. The snout/trunk is my favorite part, but he’s so great. The composition is perfect too. I love the movement of the eye you get with the little daisy, the mushroom and the monster.

What type of pen do you outline with?

Thank you! I hadn’t even noticed I’d used the golden triangle in my composition. I consciously do that with my photography, but not my art. For the black lines, I just used my favorite angled liner brush with black watercolor. It doesn’t have a brand name on it and I have no idea where it came from (or I’d buy more).

Thin liner side:

Tiny ball stylus side (perfect for tiny dots):

The angle makes lining super fluid and handles curves and swirls beautifully.
