A Shoe Bag... But for clothes!

I like getting all of my clothes for the week out on a Sunday, and I had been keeping each day’s clothes in miscellaneous shopping bags with a bit of card pinned on indicating the day.

I knew I wanted to make a set of 7 jolly zip up bags that would fold down small for the clothes, and I really liked the look of the Shoe Bag pattern in Fat Quarter Home, which I borrowed from my library.

I had leftover cat fabric from a baby playmat I made in 2021, so I made this bag.

It rolls up nice and small, and the loop keeps it tidy. Modelled here by my ginger baby:

When I made it, the cat fabric was printed really wonky, with a line on the pattern dropping almost 3/4" over 12".

I had to “Fussy cut” a row of cats, but thankfully you can’t tell the fabric was wonky in the finished bag.

I’m pleased with how much it holds, but I want to make the 7 I plan for the full week about 2" larger, which takes them out of the fat quarter size, so I’m having to be a bit creative.

This is the fabric for the next one I’m going to start soon.

Some people asked how I use the bags for my clothes. I like getting my whole week’s clothes out on a Sunday night, rather than the night before or on the morning. I had been putting each day’s non-hanging clothes in a set of misc branded tote bags, but they weren’t pretty, and I wanted them to be cheerful.

I put the bags on my bed, check the planner and the weather forecast, then set out clothes for each day.

I put the hanging clothes in the wardrobe in day order, and then everything else goes into the corresponding day’s bag.

All the bags get stacked in this red Kallax crate, so they’re ready to go on the right day.

I love how jolly they look. (Cat for scale :heart_eyes_cat:)

I’m on pattern version 4.5. The original pattern needed enlarging. Then I got narked with the zip adding bulk to the French seams at the top and bottom of the bag, so on the mush bag I added a strip of fabric at the top and bottom. I tweaked the size again for the teal birds bag, and now I can batch make the last three.

You are very organized! Sure beats looking for the right color tights or socks at 6 am and finding out they needed to be washed!

Thanks both. I benefit from a really smooth start to the day so it’s worth it for me, and that way I can fit in some sewing time before work on work from home days

And thank you. Bubbin is pretty adorable.

He was found in a trash can when he was about 10 weeks old, and my sister hand reared him in her airing cupboard. He lost his eye in a fight with a neighbour’s cat, but it’s ok, he went round their house a week later and stole their gammon joint.
He’s a 14 year old little man now, and we are his retirement home. He’s soft as butter

Wonky fabric is definitely my biggest complaint when it comes to fabric panels. You did a great job of overcoming that frustration though.
These are such a bright and cheerful way to start the day and a smart way of helping your mornings go nice and smooth!
