A theater in our area has a big gingerbread contest/auction fundraiser each year. People enter their gingerbread creations, and then the theatre auctions them off to raise money for the upcoming season. We’ve never participated before, but this year our family decided to give it a shot. My daughter made a gingerbread sandcastle on her own, entered the junior division and won first place (so proud of her). My son and I entered the team category and made Santa’s rocketship so he can deliver presents to all the aliens. It didn’t win any prizes, but it did raise $250 for the theater so that is a win in my mind. A bank bought it to display over the holidays. I made the rocket, the presents, and the planet surface. My son made the adorable aliens. It took 4 batches of gingerbread and a tonne of fondant. To make the rocket, I made a mold out of an old disposable aluminum baking dish and baked the gingerbread in two halves. It didn’t line up properly so I had to do a lot of trimming and filling in with icing. Then I covered the whole thing in a thin layer of fondant. I painted it with edible luster dust that I mixed with tequila (the only alcohol we had…we don’t drink). I painted smarties and pez with food coloring to make the rivets. The planet surface is fondant painted with food coloring.the presents are gingerbread and fondant, and the aliens are fondant painted with food coloring. It’s 18" tall and the base is 18" square. It took a week of late nights, and it’s a little crooked, but overall I am happy with how it turned out. I used an old family recipe that is way too hard to eat (I’ve literally broken a tooth on it before) but it it super strong for decorative structures.

No way would I have the patience to pull this off. There are so many great details, but the Santa font on the side might be my favorite.

There was a lot of discussion about what the appropriate font should be, and several practices writing Santa in the NASA font. It was frustrating with icing that was runnier than it should have been on a vertical surface, but it did work in the end!
