Baby Humpback Whale

For my first finished project of the year, I finished up a WIP, this whale!

I saw the pattern ages ago and had to make it when I was gifted this velvet yarn! It ended up ~15 inches (38 cm) long.

Pattern: Baby Humpback Whale
Yarn: Bernat Baby Velvet in colors Emerald and Vapor Gray
Hook: F (3.75mm)

The eyes are 9mm safety eyes. I added the white rings to make them stand out more using some lightweight white yarn I had.

The pattern said to sew the top and bottom together using mattress stitch, but I crocheted them together instead using the emerald yarn:

I like taking photos outside when I can to show colors better, but it’s hard when there’s so much snow (and not a lot of sun)!

So I used my sunroom for the rest of the photos (still cold, but much easier to use ).

I looked at the pattern and finished project in the link you gave…your whale has a much better looking mouth because of the crochet finish! Thanks for the tips…the yarn looks a lot better as well…I hope it is still available!

I luvs it! I didn’t pay attention to the category, so the first photo had me thinking you’d sewn this from thick, chenille upholstery fabrics of some sort.

I love it!

I think I’ll be making one or more of those in the future too.
Was going to make my own pattern, but this pattern looks great.

What a fun project! I agree with AIMR, I like your version better than the original. The addition of the white to make the eyes stand out was a smart choice. Your whale looks so soft and squishy!
