When my son started middle school he was always fascinated by those giant floor chess boards. And played whenever we came by one that had pieces and was free to play.
So I started building wood chess pieces as a lockdown project. But then life happened and they ended up in boxes in my basement. Because I wanted to give my son some alternative to constant gaming I got to work and finally finished my longest lasting WIP.
What a cool project! Your pieces are such great representations; simple but obviously what they are supposed to be. Is the game board made from those deck tiles?

How fun!
I first saw those huge giant lawn chess pieces when I stayed at the Biltmore in Arizona! It was too large to play a full game (a bit difficult to track the moves). Looks like you made his set much more playing friendly!
Great use of what you had and also, wow…I just admire those of you with woodworking skills!
I started with the tiles and adjusted the pieces to fit. At first my son complained that it’s way too small to walk between the pieces while playing but now he likes it. It’s the perfect size to walk around the board and reach everything on it. Maybe I should also paint some wood disks to play checkers.

The one I played with was spaced out which made it tiring to play more than a few rounds…lugging the pieces even two feet was a task! Plus, you can’t see the “board” in it’s entirety to play well…I am sure your son will have fun outdoors and indoors playing chess (which I think is great!!). Checkers would also be great!
I hope he makes good use of it. He used to be pretty good at it when he was younger. Now we had kind of a fair game and I don’t know more than how the pieces are allowed to move.
That’s something I really love about this community. Even when you post something that’s great on its own there will be ideas on how to improve it.
