Bird's Nest Photography

I found a bird’s nest in a dried up, dead hanging plant in the corner of the porch. What drew my attention to it was that twice when I opened the front door, there was a flutter away from that corner.

I decided to get a ladder and look. I was surprised to see three, small eggs in a loosely-constructed nest. I put on some vinyl gloves to take it down to get some pics. Look how tiny they are compared to my hand!

I don’t know if it is true or not but I’d heard that if you touch bird’s eggs, when the parents come back they won’t stay to hatch the eggs. I didn’t want my human scent to be detected.

The eggs were a pinky-beige color with a speckling that was almost metallic gold. They looked like delicate, rose gold eggs. So pretty!

After I got my pics, I carefully replaced the nest. The parent came back (I never saw two parents) and, over time, hatched the eggs and fed the baby birds until they flew away.

I liked the loose, rustic design of the nest. Traditionally, in illustrations and pics, I see tightly woven nests made of twigs. This nest I thought was very artistic.

I use a PS camera but the pics would have been better if I had the resolution set higher at that time. I’m so sorry I did not because the pics are rather small and not very useful in my creative work. They’re not as large and crisp as they could have been. :slightly_frowning_face:

I think the handling the bird egg thing is an myth said so that kids don’t go grabbing eggs lol.

Anytime I’ve handled eggs and baby birds the parents have taken care of them still.
I think gloves aren’t bad though cause you’re less likely to spread something to them or you getting something from handling it.

Totally awesome find btw

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s an old wives’ tale, urban legend and the like. And yes about the gloves.

Really? How sweet that that has happened.

Thank you.

Beautiful! A nest fell from the eaves on our house and there’s a baby bird in it. I feel like I need to put it up higher somehow but don’t want the parent(s) to be unable to find it… :fearful:

In general if you can put it somewhere near where it came from it should be ok-- if wherever it came from isn’t accessible, then putting up a temporary box or something can do the trick. (If you have local wildlife rehab people you can call, they should be able to give you better advice for your particular bird & situation)

I think messing with an active bird’s nest is actually against the law (at least here in Oregon, at least for now. Maybe Trump hates birds), but you can take down nests after the birds have vacated!

Are there any birds that ever come back to their old nests or are they always wanting to relocate and upgrade?
