Birthday cakes for our winter babies

Several of my nieces are winter babies (as am I). Two of them are sisters.
I got a request for a simple chocolate birthday cake for her class party.

After the party, I got a voice message from her sister, updating me that the cake was a great success and everyone loved it. As her birthday is coming up, she asked that I make her a cake as well, but said that she doesn’t like chocolate cakes that much and if I could make an orange cake (kids are so weird!). I’ve never made orange cake before, so I looked up a recipe and tried it. The test cake turned out nice, so I made one for her.

The next voice message from her was after her party at school, stating that the cake was well received. Turns out, according to my brother, that the kids were happy for a change from the usual chocolate birthday cakes that everyone brings.
I also made a cake for my own birthday. Simple chocolate cake with little cake pop bumps.

Lots of lucky cake eaters in the winter!

I bet the orange cake was really nice and a big change from the usual chocolate or vanilla cakes.

Oh, they are beautiful! Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever had an orange cake, either. Now I’m intrigued.

I used this recipe, as it seemed very simple and I thought would work well for kids:
