Black/White Midi Shirtdress

It’s another shirtdress! Maybe I’ll get enough of these at some point, but it is not this day.

I used the same pattern as last time - New Look 6651. Similar modifications as last time. I used the same sleeve, but did a full-length version and a wider cuff - probably should have shortened the sleeve a bit since I’m short, but I didn’t. I did do a narrow shoulder adjustment, though, and that improved the fit of the bodice. I added belt loops, too. I might make a matching tie belt since I had about a yard of fabric left.

The fabric is a 50/50 linen-cotton blend by Robert Kaufman. It’s on the lighter side of medium-weight, but it has a nice drape. I went and spent my birthday money on more of this lovely fabric, but in different colors. This dress used up 4.5 yards! Those sleeves are so nice and full.

I found the perfect buttons at Jo-Ann’s…then realized that I didn’t have enough and had to go back for more. Fortunately, despite them being on sale (ridiculously cheap), there was one card of them left at my store! And, I finished the dress just in time to wear it next weekend for our family Christmas party.

Pocketses!

So much fabric!

Such lovely details! This is a dress that can be dressed up or down! I can see it with some of your lovely shawls and scarves!

This is the perfect classic dress! And the color is very nice, too. Can’t wait to see what you do with the rest of your new fabric!

Thank you!

I’ll probably make a pinafore-apron in the pale grey/white version of this fabric and a short-sleeved or sleeveless shirtdress in the red/white.

I covet your pinafore apron and you haven’t even made it yet! I’m looking forward to seeing that!

Thanks, everyone!

I always worry that grey is going to come off as too Dr. Evil-ish. :joy:

Simple yet sophisticated! The fabric was just calling for this pattern. Linen-cotton blend sounds amazing.

Because I’m also into colors and fabrics, what other colors did you get?

I got a light grey/white and a red/white. But, it comes in a few other colors. You can get it at Field’s Fabrics, and it’s priced like cotton, not linen.

I love the red and white!

Oh my gosh, this looks so comfortable to wear, but without sacrificing any sophistication. What a great fabric choice!

Thank you! Elastic is awesome, especially when you have sensory issues. I’ve been hunting down patterns and modifications to make clothes that are comfortable but don’t necessarily look like it. As much as I’d like to wear sweatpants 24/7, it’s not always appropriate. :joy: That, and I’m trying to make my wardrobe more feminine than the 90s grunge vibe I’m currently rocking.

I have a bunch of fleece lined leggings, tunic sweaters, and shawls. I call them my office pajamas and formal blankets. I never outgrew the 90s grunge, so these office pajamas are always accompanied by my ratty Chucks. But hey. I have a lot of dress and skirt sewing goals but have been focused more on the “formal blanket” portion of my wardrobe this year… This pattern looks SO up my alley!

I think after two years of too comfy-stay-at-home clothing, a lot of people are looking to dress up a bit more but still be comfortable. I have noticed a lot more patterns that seem to fit the bill.

Have you heard of quilted petticoats?! It’s basically a quilt attached to a waistband and it’s worn under a skirt…but, it’s a quilt that you wear! Doesn’t that sound divine?

WOW! That does sound different…but warm! I have seen more silk and wool petticoats and chemises, which also sound warm to me. I am already hating the cold weather here in PA…and it hasn’t even started!

Wool would be nice. But quilted is probably faster, cheaper, and easier to care for.

I imagine it’s quite the adjustment going from the warmer climate back to one so cold. You guys are getting a proper Nor’easter this week, too. It just started coming down heavily here a couple hours ago, and we’re supposed to get about half a foot of lake-effect snow. I hope your hubby is letting you get enough knitting time in.

I have a love affair with historical undergarments, and I’ve always loved quilted petticoats. It’s so cool that they are both warm and also, the amount and style of quilting can give them so much deliberate shape. But also, I have a late Victorian walking skirt made from black matelasse that is so simple but beautiful, so I’m very tempted to wear quilted petticoats as outer-garments rather than under ones. How cozy!
