I got some blank watercolor paper postcards for Christmas, so I decided that my kids and I should paint some of them to send as thank you cards for our holiday gifts this year. For our first try, we decided to use this (very forgiving) tutorial Watercolor Blotch Birds. There are many similar tutorials out there, it seems to be a popular method. We vaguely followed along, and honestly I kinda love the results. You can’t really mess up the “blobs” as the different shapes/colors just give the birds different personalities, which makes it a perfect project to do with kids (or adults lacking confidence in their painting abilities). I painted the top postcard, my daughter painted the middle one, and my son painted the one on the bottom. I love how they are all different, but all have fun personality. We added all the beaks/legs/etc. with a fine tipped sharpie after the paint dried. It was a pretty quick project, even with the time spent waiting for the paint to dry. These birds have now flown away to give thanks to various friends who thought of us over the holidays.
So cute! And a great way to keep kids remembering to send thank you cards!
These would be so fun to receive in the mail!
Ack!! These are awesome! I need to do some of these tutorials! How fun!
I love the person who made the pink dive bombing bird! ha ha ha
I agree that blob water coloring is easy and fun for all! I have taught many people how to make all sorts of things from watercolor blobs! It really ignites the imagination and anyone can make a blob!
These are fantastic. Notecards are so personal as well.
These are so cute!
All three are wonderful and so thoughtful! I’m sure they’ll bring lots of smiles.
So cool, it looks like the birds are having a party.
I think I might try this with my bunch of kids.
Please do! We’ve also made monsters with a similar principal in the past (only we blew on the paint blobs with straws to make the blobs even crazier). They are a great (and encouraging) exercise in creativity for kids. ![]()
Very cute and creative! I’ve seen this style of cards sold in stores but I never thought to make them. Turned out great!
