Blue Halter Sundress

The second dress in my summer capsule wardrobe project came out alright…after a little adjusting. It’s really comfortable and the skirt is very twirly. The back is open and the V is deep, so it’s perfect for the hottest days of summer.

The pattern is McCall’s 8087, view C, but shorter and with pockets. The skirt ate up so much fabric. I used a blue cotton double gauze from JoAnn’s. I did the usual adjustment to shorten the skirt, but could have taken more off. The top gaped oddly at the sides, so I did a quick and dirty alteration (I had sort of fixed it in this picture, but I had to rip that out and remove more volume). I didn’t want to rip out the entire waistband to fix it. Instead of a single 1" wide piece of elastic for the waist, I made two channels for narrower elastic.

Love watching your summer wardrobe grow!

While doing costuming for the theater, gaping at the sides was very common. No way I was going to take out the waist either! Nice save and no one is going to even know!

I’ve put in darts through the lining and outer fabrics and still, no one pointed them out! I love the tiered skirt.

Thank you so much!

@AIMR, I don’t think I’ve ever owned a tiered skirt or dress before. The next sewing project in my queue is a tiered skirt, same fabric but grey.

Thank you!

Halter neck dresses always make me think of 1950s Marilyn Monroe.

Do you remember the infinity dress craze? I made one before I had a decent grasp on garment sewing, but I still wore it to death.

It’s so funny you say that because I spent a good hour scouring the internet for one recently for a vacation I’m taking. It was hard to find a shorter one that wasn’t a crazy price. It did cross my mind to make one but I’m terrible at finishing a project let alone finishing one on time. Also, I’m a horrible seamstress! :woman_facepalming:t3:
