I made this zine a couple years ago to put in the free little libraries around the area (I wanted to do a project providing the most basic of sewing basics). I did all the artwork digitally with Rebelle 3 (a really cool software that imitates water based mediums) & GIMP (for text) on my Surface Pro 7.
It’s the ‘one-sheet’ style of mini-zine where the pages are all printed on one side and it folds a certain way to make the little zine. The back side of the sheet is generally a “flyer” and so I used the cover art.
I’m finally working on an Issue#2 which will be how to sew a button on. But balancing the reference point of the ‘reader knows nothing about sewing’ with keeping it simple enough for the mini-zine is a bit of a challenge. Also making the actual sewing steps clear (I take photos of my own hands while doing the sewing for drawing reference for the technique/steps - because honestly, I think sewists couldn’t even consciously break it down without pausing while doing it; technique is just ingrained/subconscious at this point).
Ooh! That’s a good idea. I’m going to work on converting it to pdf with instructions on how to cut/fold and make it a shareable google file. And I’ll share the link.
Yeah. They didn’t even teach any “life skills” or “home ec” equivalent when I was in school (2+ decades ago). I always found it amusing that for my first “real job” after college, I was hired based on my sewing skills (which I never was formally taught).
There are people to this day that will drive 20 miles to have me sew a button on a shirt for them. And I just think that’s knowlge/skill everyone should have access to - And sure, they could look it up on the internet, but I’ve noticed for some reason people really need someone to tell them that they can do it, with sewing skills especially.
Aw, I used to make some things with this style of print/fold method and this makes me nostalgic for that. It’s also a really cool little zine that I can just imagine someone finding in a Little Free Library and getting really excited about.
