Budget Protogen Mask

I made this back in October for my son. He wanted to be a Protogen for Halloween. In basic terms, it’s a cyborg animal.

I didn’t have time to do everything I wanted, but people were impressed, I guess.

I purchased a rudimentary tutorial on Etsy by MugiwaraCosplay that had an accompanying video which, imo, did not fully explain the assembly process in enough detail. Mistakes were made, curses were uttered, a lot of duct tape was used. Still, I would have not known how to approach this without that tut.

The base is EVA foam. I ordered it through Etsy from TheFoamery. Or maybe it was Foamary. I think that’s what the shop was called.
It is very lightweight. It’s glued together using Barge. Very toxic fumes, so I had to use a gas mask type thing and be outside. The cracks were filled with air-dry clay, I’m pretty certain. It would not have had significant cracks if the instructions were more detailed. I left it outside overnight to cure and get rid of the stench.
I covered it with a coat of something I cannot remember then layers of black acrylic then the details added then a top coat of something else which I cannot remember, but made it look shiny.
The holes in the mask were covered with two layers of mesh ribbon because I could not find any fabric that was dense enough. The plastic mesh I found in store was out of the black color, which was another reason for the ribbon.
The ears are probably the heaviest part. They’re made from thick cushion foam I purchased at a chain hardware store. I sculpted it into ear shapes then covered with faux fur. The back part has the fur glued so it drapes down to my son’s shoulders.
He didn’t want a tail.

My son named it “Toasty.” It’s currently in his room on a shelf keeping guard.

Thank you for looking.

It sure is! It was somewhat of a pain to work with because even though I set it out with weights on it for DAYS it still curled. Do you know of a way to uncurl it?
I glued it together using Barge, which worked very well. Unfortunately, I didn’t know I should have put an R or an L on the pieces because once they were cut out they looked very similar.
I did purchase a, oh what are those breathing masks for particulates called? Well, one of those. It was excellent with keeping out the Barge fumes and since then it has been great for scooping cat litter!

I added text details to the first post since my description kept getting longer and longer

I used a heat gun to shape it once but I’m far from an expert. This is more involved than what I did! You nailed it.

Thank you, I finished it the morning he was to wear it at school. I think I had three hours of sleep, went to his school parade, then came home and took a long nap.
I’m amazing at procrastinating.

Lol, I don’t always do something like this. He may not even want something next year because he’ll be in middle school. I appreciate the kudos.
