Butterfly Button

I thought of the blue fabric I bought for making a “sea themed” cat tree many years back, and since I’m not able to do anything more with them I decided to turn it into an embroidered button. (Well, also this fabric is horrible for the cat trees any way…I really should learn how to dye like this, though,).

Here’s @Dooney 's post that’s been on my mind since they posted it, Stumpwork luna moth. I’m aiming for something similar (either a hair pin, another button pin, something…Just need more practice, heh).

Here’s the video that gave me the idea. https://youtu.be/Dk7KahQK1lY?si=IMOTrHvP9nK4v37w

Had a bit of a mishap, and needlessly damaged a needle,. I couldn’t find a lid to use (as per the video), but then I remembered I had an old canister of cornmeal, and sure enough, it was well too old, yikes. Anyway, I used that lid. Well, like a dumb dumb I cut too much fabric off one side, and had to force the needle through the plastic part (to keep from tearing the fabric). Well, while doing so the board I was using as a platform to push the needle in with a pair of pliers slipped and the tip of the needle bent…I was able to straighten it mostly out, but that will have to be replaced sometime soon (luckily the needles aren’t that crazy priced like a lot of my other craft tools, :grimacing: ). The really dumb thing is, that plastic lid wasn’t that hard to push the needle through…Hoo boy! So I damaged the needle for no reason, AAAAAAAaaaaaargh!

Meh, all in all, though, I really like the idea, and I did learn quite a bit from doing it. So the next one should look a lot better…(I still need to practice 3d flowers, though…Holy halibuts do I have issues with those, :grimacing:).

And the back

Lovely stitching!

Your butterfly and flowers turned out wonderful! Would a thick stabilizer interfacing for the back be easier?

Watched a short vid (as I don’t know what that is, heh). I bet it would help (in some areas), but probably not that much where I had problems with this. It was quite thin. However, watching that vid does make me wonder if it’d be easier to cut the fabric with the stablizer. I definitely do not have the knack for cutting cloth (which is why I use an X-acto knife, rulers, and boards for cutting out the fabric for the mini cat trees. Something I’ll have to test.

Very cool idea! It turned out really pretty!

I love how you experiment with things to get the results you want.
