Cardboard "TED" sign

I’m creating a TED talk sign using some large shipping cardboard packing. My issue is how to cover it to sand and paint it.

Paper mache was my 1st option but the sides seem to be an issue.

Any ideas? See photos…

I would just put more cardboard over the sides! You can use hot glue if tape doesn’t work. It’s this to go on stage with a ted talk?

Welcome to Lettuce Craft, @Wnorman02 !

I too thought you can cover the sides with more cardboard.

It will be used at a family reunion where I’ll have several guest speakers discussing various topics.

And thank you for the advice

If you don’t need to sand too much, you could use brown paper bags. It won’t be as thick, but it would cover it.

It will be used as a sign only, other than the anesthetic it won’t have any other function. So being super sturdy isn’t needed, but…

I do want to paint it red.

Welcome to Lettuce Craft!

The letters look great. I agree with Gozer that you could get away with attaching brown paper and then painting.

I’d agree - brown paper bags seem like the right call. Or maybe wide masking tape? It would self-stick and paints well.

I know, I went old school and cheap, but realized it’d take forever.

Thank you all, for the advice. I’m going to try the wide masking tape and see how that goes.

I’ll keep you updated with images as it progresses

Please do!
Would love to see the final result.

Hello all,

After much consideration and discussion with you all and craft store employees, I decided to use heavy stock paper to cover the sides.

Note: I used liquid nail because I felt like the hot glue would have dried before getting it in place.

Currently I’m back to my original plan “Paper Mache”, any other suggestions to cover and paint?

I would still paper mache. It looks great so far. When I paper mache if I want it to look really polished I sand it. Since these are big I might use a roller to paint them and use paint from the hardware store.

What’s your paper mache recipe?

I just use watered down Elmer’s glue! Dries faster and you can get a big bottle at the hardware store!
