Christmas cookies in memory of my mom - now with recipes - Holiday Spectacular Entry 2025

20 years ago, when I moved out starting college my mom made me a recipe book with all her favorite Christmas cookie recipes. Each year I made a small batch of cookies with some friends but nothing very fancy. Baking was my mother’s passion and during Christmas time she supplied the whole family and close friends with plenty of cookies.

After she died of breast cancer 7 years ago, my dad, my brother and I started making our favorite cookies from her book. In combination we now mange to make almost the same variety she used to make every year.

Here’s what I made this year

In addition to that, my son, who’s currently living in Italy, sent a jar of homemade cantuccini.

Here are some pages from my mother’s book:

Stacked almond cookies

Ingredients

  • 420 g flour
  • 210 g sugar
  • 250 g butter
  • 2 small eggs
  • 125 g finely ground almonds
  • Strawberry, raspberry, or blackberry jam (depending on taste)
  • Powdered sugar

Knead into a dough with a consistency similar to pie crust. Chill until firm and easy to roll out.

Roll out the dough and cut out shapes using cookie cutters of the same shape in three different sizes.
Bake in a convection oven at 160 degrees Celsius until golden brown.

Allow to cool.

Pipe jam on top of the larger two cookies a stack three different sized cookies on top of each other.

Allow to dry and generously dust with powdered sugar.

If anyone is interested in some of the recipes I’m happy to post translations.

They look yummy and your presentation is so lovely!

Our neighbor is originally from Germany and made us a bunch of cookies this year! My favorite was one that had some anise in it, which is a good flavor to have with tea or coffee!

I am sure your family loves this tradition that you are carrying on!

That plate looks filled with deliciousness and your mom’s book is such a wonderful gift that I’m sure will be treasured by future generations as well!

I’d love a translation of your absolute favorite recipe, when and if you have time. I love cooking and finding old family recipes is always a thrill.

What a beautiful way to celebrate your mother’s holiday tradition!
I love her recipe book!

I’d like a translation of the gingerbread boys and the stacked stars, if possible.

@MistressJennie, @Tapestry, @madebyBeaG thank you!

@AIMR my book has a recipe for anise cookies, too. I love the taste but I never made them. It needs several hours of drying/setting and other than my mom I never had enough kitchen space to put several cookie sheets out on the countertops to dry. I can share the recipe if you like.

@kayrun the stacked almond cookies are everyone’s favorite. I will start with that recipe and add it to the original post.

What a lovely assortment! The ones with a hazelnut on top looks a bit like the nut cookies my mother in law makes.

Thanks! They are basically meringue with ground hazelnuts. Very delicious and easy to make and a great way to use leftover egg whites.

@Tapestry, @kayrun, I added the recipe for the stacked cookies to the original post.

Please be aware that I live in the metric world and you might need a conversion chart and a calculator.
