"Cookie Monster" Yarn Hat (Crochet)

I had several bags of yarn donated to my Crochet & Knit Club at school. One of my students spied a little stuffed Cookie Monster (just the head) and I didn’t know what it was for, so I let him keep it. When I finally got around to putting all of the yarn away, I found a small ball of Lion Brand’s Sesame Street One Hat Wonder yarn in the Cookie Monster colorway. The band had a pattern for a knitted hat, but a quick Google search led me to the crochet version (pattern #L90242).

Mine came out about an inch short, so I added a band on it by slip stitching a round, and then adding a row of half double crochet in white. I then finished it off with another round of slip stitch in the main color yarn. I used pretty much every ounce of the Cookie Monster yarn!

Since I no longer had the Cookie Monster for the hat pom-pom, I purchased some online. I attached a 1.5" button to the inside of the hat, and then, after pulling the elastic loop to the inside of the hat, I looped the elastic of the pom-pom around the button. This way, the pom-pom can be removed before washing. And, the button is large enough that it shouldn’t pose a choking hazard (although, the pom-pom could possibly be a choking hazard). In any case, it’s a cute little child-sized hat!

So cute! I remember seeing these in stores and wishing there was enough yarn for an adult sized hat. I like the modifications you made!

Thank you! I wish it came in an adult size, as well. Sadly, I think the entire line has been discontinued, so I can’t even buy 2 balls of it to make an adult version. And, while the Cookie Monster pom-pom would have been adorable, I’m pretty happy with the pom-pom I have. Also, I tried to do a ribbed band to give it a bit more stretch, but it didn’t look good, so I’m glad I switched it up!

Thank you! The yarn formed an interesting pattern for a large chunk of the rows, but then I think my tension was slightly different the next time I picked it up, so the pattern didn’t continue.

Thank you! The yarn was very soft for a 100% acrylic yarn. I tried to find an equally soft whit for the band, but it’s not an exact match.
