Custom coat for my son

My son asked for a coat for their birthday (an indoor, dress coat), with a very specific design that they drew on a piece of paper for me. Making it was well beyond my skill level, especially with having to draft a pattern myself, but my son really wanted it, so I preserved. The results are not perfect by any means, it was a humbling experience. In the end I did wind up with something they can wear, that looks fairly close to what my son asked for, at least close enough that my son is happy with it. I’m more proud of the fact that I stuck with it and made a thing than the actual design and construction…but hey, we learn from mistakes and next time the kids ask me to make something outside my comfort zone, I’ll (probably) panic less. It’s lined in black, with a black collar and cuffs. It looks extra wonky in the pictures because my son had been jumping around and the front is askew (also it could use a good ironing)…but my kid is happy, and that’s all that matters in the end.

It’s wearable. He looks good in it. Mom made it just for him. You learned new things. ALL wins!

You did it!

You have one stylish kiddo! Good job, keeping going when you hit a point where it doesn’t feel like it’s working out is more than half the battle!

Lovely coat and so cool that you drafted it from a drawing he made! I wouldn’t even know where to begin. Amazing job.
