My family loves both Halloween and Dia De Los Muertos, so skeletons feature heavily in our October decorating scheme. We also really like birds, and we feed many feathered friends in our yard. The corvids in our neighborhood are particularly friendly with us, a few will even eat out of our hands. I decided that a corvid skeleton was missing from our Halloween decor. Cut paper collages are my art medium of choice, so I decided to make a corvid collage to hang up near the ofrenda this month. I started by tearing a bunch of peices of tissue paper and gluing them to foamcore to make the background, I chose the orange and yellow colors because they remind me of jack-o-lanterns, the marigolds associated with Dia de Los Muertos, and the color of the maple leaves in our neighborhood in fall. Then, using a drawing I did for inktober a few years ago as a reference for the skeleton, I cut out each of the little bones by hand and glued them on. most bones are 2 or 3 pieces of paper layered to create the shading and depth I wanted. The finished piece is about 6"x8" unframed, and 9.5"x11.5" framed. The colors didn’t photograph as accurately as I’d hoped, but I’m very happy with how it turned out. We may just keep it up year round.
That is absolutely stunning! Everything about it is entrancing and the layered paper came out so perfect. I cant imagine doing those tiny, tiny foot bones!
This is absolutely stunning. I am in awe.
Wow! This is incredible! I’d definitely leave it up all year.
Whoa. This is incredible and stunning!
Congratulations! Your Cut Paper Corvid Skeleton is a Featured Project this week!
This collage is just phenomenal and so worthy to be a featured project.
Thank you for the kind words everyone!
(And the foot bones were a pain, especially since I’d just cut my nails. I had to resort to using tweezers to place them. )
What a gorgeous labor of love! The skeleton is amazing, and the background is the perfect complement to it!
Of course you should! It’s awesome!
