Cutting down a sweater

I bought a long cardigan sweater that is a couple of sizes too big for me. I’ve fallen in love with it, but would like to make it smaller.

It’s a thin commercial machine knit. Can I just cut it down like fabric, zigzag the edges, and stitch it together?

Not sure about cutting knits but with my handwoven fabric I always zigzag right inside where I want the edges to be before cutting to make sure it doesn’t unravel.

Thats a good idea, thanks!

Look up ”steeking” for how to secure the edges before you cut. Generally the fabric will not ”want” to unravel sideways, but all bets are off if the yarn is slippery or if you cut a horisontal cut without securing it first…
