My niece is getting married, she’s had a tough life. Her mom, my sister, passed when she was very young. Her older sister & her baby niece were murdered 2 years ago… she is so strong & resilient. She has honored me by asking if i would embroider 3 roses onto her wedding dress to signify her mom, her sister, & her niece always being by her side.
This is her dress & where she is thinking she would like the roses.
I would really like to do this, but i don’t want to screw it up. I’ve embroidered for years, but never on anything like this.
I need help!
My initial thought is to embroider roses onto mesh/tulle then sew them onto her dress… does that sound right? Does anyone have tips? Has anyone done something like this before? Any resources or tips would be more than appreciated! I want to do her proud.
Thank you!
It’s much more convenient to embroider on a small piece of fabric than a whole dress
If you don’t like the result you can start over
My first ever job was at a dry cleaner’s, when I was 13 or something. I’ve had to console several crying brides because after the wedding, they had brought in their dresses to be dry cleaned, and during the dry cleaning process, attached pieces such as embroidery, silk flowers, fabric belts etc bled dye all over the dress. We always mentioned that beforehand and offered to (neatly) cut them off, but many brides didn’t want to do that because it would “ruin” the dress and they were convinced it wouldn’t happen to them. I remember one beautiful white lace dress that had decorative handmade silk flowers attached to it, and the green dye from the petals had bled all over the dress (it actuallly looked like a trail of blood, but green). So, based on that experience, I wouldn’t want to permanently attach anything non-white to a white wedding dress.
Exactly my thought. Handsewn so it could be removed, not only for cleaning, but also maybe to display some way or at least keep somewhere she could easily see it.
I actually worked in a wedding dress alterations place for awhile.
You can’t really clean most wedding dresses, especially dry cleaning. It’s why most dry cleaners have posts that say they’re not responsible for damaged clothing.
Will the embroidery be another color?
Also, is she done with her alterations? If she isn’t done with her wedding dress alterations it would be difficult to do the embroidery on it as the shape of the dress could change. If they have to take in more where the buttons are in the back it might end up cutting into your embroidery. But if you wait until the final dress fitting, it wouldn’t give you a lot of time to work on adding the embroidery. If you make the embroidery on mesh, the seamstress might be willing to sew it onto the dress for a cost?
thank you for your insights. she has not finished with the alterations yet, she was hoping for red or red, pink, & purple roses (the bleeding is a fear of mine)
