Family Project: Valentines Gingerbread House

I have been in a mission to use up all the things in the fridge, freezer, pantry, and around the house. I’ve made white chili with salsa verde I made in 2024, chickpea truffles with chocolate chips sent to me by accident from Imperfect Foods, and cupcakes with lemon curd from the back of the fridge.

Yesterday I was hiding Ada’s Valentine gift in Narnia (a weird closet, built off the old back door of the house, when someone added a room over the garage). The door locks, and Ada can’t get into it, so it’s where I hide gifts, or new books and craft kits I sometimes pick up for a rainy day. Back in early October I picked up a Halloween Gingerbread House kit, to make with my Spooky Girl. Unfortunately we all got sick, and I was busy with Halloween costumes, so I decided I’d make it for Christmas. Then Christmas came and went…

So when I found it yesterday (and noticed the Best By date is this month, I decided we needed to just do it. I found a tub of white frosting in the cupboard, and added a tub of pink, and some Valentine candies to my grocery order yesterday. This morning I used the black, super stiff icing to put the house together, then let it harden while I adjusted the orange and lime green frostings. I pulled out the gel food coloring and made the orange into purple and the green into teal.

I did some preliminary decorating, and let it stiffen up over lunch. After lunch, I let the kiddo go nuts.

Jim did the pink shingles on the back roof. I love his dormer windows, filled with hearts. :two_hearts:

But now I have a ton of frosting and pink sprinkles left over. And I have to use up all the things…. Looks like I need to make cupcakes….

Happy Valentines Day my friends! :face_blowing_a_kiss::heart:

How fun and cute! What a great family activity AND a way to use up edibles before they can’t be used any more!

This is such a fun transformation from (would-be) Halloween house to Valentine’s house. Nicely done!

Thank you friends!

Ada taste tested a chunk of the front of the house for dessert last night. She apparently likes dry chocolate cookie, covered in frosting and candy. I tried a tiny nibble. It was fine, but not amazing. I preferred the leftover watermelon gummy rings.

Also the whole kitchen smells like frosting…
