Itâs been an adventure. I did the larger one first (ya know, since theyâre not the same size, lol). The pattern had you knit flat, then sew it together. The instructions baffled me. I used chatGPT to explain each step to me like I was five, and then coach me along the way.
After watching a video for something else, I realized I wasnât even doing the knit stitch correctly, which is why it looked like this:
My second one, I think I mightâve used smaller needles. Additionally, I tried DPNs. The pattern was for flat so Iâm pretty proud for figuring it out. Also, I learned to properly do a knit stitch:
My next goals: socks and thrummed mittens (which is the true reason for learning to knit. Ever since I learned about thrummed mittens years ago, I have yearned for them.) However, Iâm going to tackle socks first. Weâre leaving for a road trip/cruise this upcoming weekend and socks seemed much more portable than having thrums all over the place.
I hope youâve all enjoyed my mittens and that theyâve given you a giggle. Let them serve as a reminder of your first attempts of new crafts. Haha!
Look at you go! Thatâs great for a first try, and brave to try mittens.
You can use twisted stitches on purpose to get different texture. I like a twisted 1x1 rib for a neat look.

I am SO impressed. I keep promising myself that I will knit a scarf, or even just a washcloth, to learn. But so far, nada. You went for a matching pair of something!
Pretty smart though, to compare progress in a tangible way.
Congratulations! I love that these are a visual representation of your improving skills. No doubt you are well on your way to reaching your thrummed goals.
My first knitting project, over 25 years ago, was a hat. Super simple pattern. But I read the pattern by flashlight while working a security gig. It was sooooooooo out of whack and I wore that thing proudly for years. My knit stitches were twisted, my rib pattern was waffle, everything was wrong so I gave it a drawstring and basically made a funky beret. So, thatâs how we start. Youâve got this!

Hilarious! When I took up knitting again, all that fun yarn was in style so you couldnât really see the stitches as you knit or when the item got done! I tried making a hat but couldnât get the decreases right so I tried doing a drawstring. It ended up looking like a purse, so guess what? I used it as a purse and no one knew it was really supposed to be a hat!
We have all had to start somewhere! Great job @Whistlefish ! Yay you for jumping in and tackling it!
If it were a video game, you would have leveled up! Way to go, tackling a new skill! That second mitten looks fab (and that first one is way better than my first knitted mitts were).
I think they came out great and yay for you tackling them! I knit a scarf once. It was a monstrosity that could stand up on its own. Your first attempt actually looks usable. Good luck with the socks!
Great job! Like @Magpie I too wanna teach myself to knit so this is inspiring.
Way to go challenging yourself and figuring it out. Canât wait to see what you make next.
