I made this tree back in 2020. I was a live in nanny. I didn’t have a lot of space in my room, but I really wanted a Christmas tree. So, I made a flat one.
So bought the fake Christmas tree garland and wrapped it around the frame I made. If I ever did this again I think using sturdier sticks would be much better. It ended up breaking when I put it in storage later. But it was perfect for that Christmas.

It looks better than a lot of regular trees I have seen!
Necessity is the mother of invention…and you sure made it work in your space!
It must be a fond memory as well. I remember my dad making a flat tree with lights and garland when we lived in a country that did celebrate or have anything Christmas. It is one of the best memories my siblings and I have…our dad making Christmas special for us with his flat tree. I wish I had a picture.
This is so cute! What a wonderful way to bring the holiday decor without needing a huge open space to set up. I love that it’s able to support ornaments and lights!
How about chopsticks for a frame? Also, I am curious if anyone has developed a 180 degree tree- flat on the back but still has front and side dimension.
What a great solution! It looked great and held so many ornaments! We have a flat tree, not only for space restrictions, but also because our dogs have always been allowed to chew sticks and it turns out Christmas trees are made entirely of sticks!
@SillySlippers I think that would be significantly harder to make. I’m not sure how I would pull off the 3D look myself. I think it would also need to be mounted to a wall or it would just fall forward. A 180 Flat tree sounds tricky!
I love your flat tree. It reminds me of Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree. You basically took some sticks and a lot of love and willed that beautiful tree into life.
What a fun and creative idea! It looks so festive and I love that even despite the limitations, you managed to come up with a way to overcome them. It must’ve been a joy to see it all lit up in your room!
Well, I learned something new today thanks to your question. Apparently you can buy trees like what you described. The thought had never occurred to me before.
So I am going to look now too! Did you find a brand name or seller? We use a 4 foot on table that’s against a wall. I try to reposition the branches more flat so it gives us a bit more open table space.
I love your idea and the execution. It looks beautiful! SO many spaces need flat trees. Your tree has so much texture and is so tactile, and you really only see one side at a time of any full-dimensional tree anyway! Using your technique makes it easier for those who want a tree in every room. Merry Christmas!
