I created this piece as part of the Arts & Crafts Club in the Summer Nerd Games. We were all sent a small wood plank, 2.75" x 7". I pondered that little plank for weeks and weeks with no idea what to do. Finally, when I was getting something out of Narnia (a door in our laundry room that used to lead outside, but now leads to a closet only I can fit in, and stores my small appliances and random stuff I need access to), I bumped into a mirror I bought for the kitchen for $8 at Goodwill. It’s the perfect size for the space, but is terribly boring and powder blue. I bought it thinking I might make a mosaic around the frame, but haven’t had a chance.
I remembered taking a cool miniature mosaic class with Abbeeroad a few years ago, where we used Apoxie Sculpt. Once you mix the two parts, you have a few hours to play with it before it cures, but you can add to it in layers over time. I was all out, but ordered a new tub on Amazon, and was waiting for it to arrive. As I waited I got nervous. The mirror is BIG. How am I going to fill all that space? I haven’t even used the stuff in years! Oh wait… I could practice on a small surface! Let’s fill a little wooden board!
Most of the embedded items are beads, pendants, and other jewelry findings, along with a few bits and bobs from the Tim Holtz papercrafting world. I think I used most of the different varieties of wing charms in my stash, and most of the hearts in my Vintaj findings. I couldn’t find my Vintaj metal patina paints (maybe they’re still packed?) so I used a little color shift paint leftover from making Ada’s pink dragon costume last year.
It has little rubber bumpers on the back, to keep it level against the wall. I just need to let the picture hanger I glued on dry fully, then I’ll find a spot for it. Maybe in my tea nook…
