Pocket letters are traditionally a 9-card affair in a full 3-x-3-sleeve page. But that’s not 5, so I cut away the extra pockets in an abstract design. (Yes, that top right one is…precarious.)
The card bases are a patchwork of scraps. I wanted them to be mostly neutral with a few pops of color. I had to combine yellow and orange in my rainbow, because 5, but it worked well given my limited scraps in those colors anyway.
The cupcakes are cut from a thrifted magazine and outlined in black Stabilo. For final touches, I went around each card in black Posca and added 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 stitches in the accent color. Individual closeups:
Pocket letters are typically swapped, so they usually have goodies tucked into the backs of the pockets. I didn’t go that far, but I did slip in some backing papers cut from various old underpapers. I can’t swear it’s 5 years worth of arting, but they have definitely seen their share of LC projects.

Just the five cupcakes would have been enough, but adding them to those backgrounds and then stitching takes them to a new level! I love your spontaneous work using junk mail, underpapers, magazines, etc.
True to your style, celebrating with yummy cake and paper collage!
Thanks for the kind comments, everyone! It was a fun project to work on.
I didn’t set out to do that, per se, but I like the idea that there’s a cupcake for everybody’s taste. When I saw the monster cupcake, though, I knew it had to go in.
Haha…definitely. I feel like you have whimsical/cute, perfect/traditional, “home-made”/less perfect, monsters/Halloween, and hippie/natural represented. Idk why but that totally makes me think about different crafting “personalities” we see around these parts.
I was like, OH NO! Now I want to eat cake! I love your little collages and their abstract art backings. My favs are #3 and #4, the cupcake with the hot pink flower and the one with the white icing heart. And I love ATCs!
This artwork is so unique and super cool!! I love how you put in so many thoughtful details. I also saw it as “a cupcake for every taste/personality” before I even saw the other comments, lol. I think I identify with the turtle the most (is that “whimsical”?)
Yesss, another Megwell masterpiece! I was first viewing this on greyscale because my phone was plugged in, so it was a treat to go from that to color! My reaction was “Oooo!” (but quietly since my husband is asleep). Of course you keep your underpapers! Those are an added loveliness to the backs.
