Full-Size Dinosaur Quilt

Sorry to spam with Dino Quilts, but I love how this full-size version of Elizabeth Hartman’s Dinosaur pattern turned out. My friend was jealous of the baby quilt and it was a big birthday year for her, so I had to make her one!

It definitely took way longer than I anticipated, primarily quilting it on my regular little home sewing machine (I have an impinged nerve in my shoulder, so I could only do max an hour and a half a day). I may have also stopped in the middle of it to make yet another baby quilt. (3 Quilts in the first half of 2025 definitely burned me out on sewing for the rest of the year).

I also made it more difficult for myself by using fabric scraps I already had and then shopping around (our “local” Jo-Ann’s had already closed… but luckily there’s a local quilt shop nearby and a small local craft shop that has some fabric) instead of just ordering a set of fat quarters. I like all the different fabric prints that went into it (and I think the color gradation is decent).

It was a month late of her birthday, but she loved it!

Oh my goodness. My mouth dropped open. How long do you think this took you in total? It would have been a full years project for me! Its so amazing! Your color choice is fantastic and I love that most was done from scraps! In. Awe. Seriously, I am in complete awe. You have one lucky friend!

I didn’t specifically track it, but probably upwards of 50 hours. I have no idea how long it took to cut out and label all the pieces… I was getting about one set of dinosaur blocks pieced a week (6 different colors)… It took several hours to prepare the backing, sandwich and pin, and about an hour to an hour and a half to quilt each dinosaur block, and then another couple hours to do the binding (which I used a new technique and ended up a little wonky looking - don’t look too closely).

I really love the pattern, though. It was fun to do these, like putting a puzzle together (rather than stack-and-whack style quilt blocks).
